Florida scrub is an endangered subtropical forestecoregion found in northern Florida in the United States. It is found on coastal and inland sand ridges and is characterized by a evergreen xeromorphic plant community dominated by shrubs and dwarf oaks. Because the low-nutrient sandy soils do not retain moisture, the ecosystem is effectively an arid one. Wildfires infrequently occur in the Florida scrub. Most of the annual rainfall (about 135cm or 53in) falls in summer. It is endangered by residential, commercial and agricultural development, with the largest remaining block in and around the Ocala National Forest. Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge also holds a high proportion of remaining scrub habitat, while the Archbold Biological Station near Lake Placid contains about 20km2 (7.7sqmi) of scrub habitat and sponsors biological research on it.
Plant communities
There is a high level of endemism in the flora and fauna, including an estimated 40 species of plants, 4 vertebrates and at least 46 species of arthropod found nowhere else.
The Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) is one of the species of scrub jay native to North America. It is the only species of bird endemic to the U.S. state of Florida and one of only 15 species endemic to the continental United States. Because of this, it is heavily sought by birders who travel from across the country to observe this unique species. It is known to have been present in Florida as a distinct species for at least 2 million years, and is possibly derived from the ancestors of Woodhouse's scrub jay, the inland forms of the western scrub jay.
It measures 23 to 28cm (9.1 to 11.0in) in length, and weighs from 66 to 92g (2.3 to 3.2oz), with an average 80.2g (2.83oz). The wingspan of the jay is 33–36cm (13–14in). It has a strong black bill, blue head and nape without a crest, a whitish forehead and supercilium, blue bib, blue wings, grayish underparts, gray back, long blue tail, black legs and feet.
Ecology
The Florida scrub jay is found only in Florida scrub habitat, an ecosystem that exists only in central Florida and is characterized by nutrient-poor soil, occasional drought, and frequent wildfires. Because of its somewhat harsh weather pattern, this habitat is host to a small assortment of very specific plants, including sand pine, sand live oak, myrtle oak, Chapman's oak, sandhill oak, Florida rosemary and various other hardy plants such as Eastern prickly pear.
Florida (officially Florida Este) is a mostly residential barrio of the Vicente López Partido in the northern suburbs of Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is principally a middle-class neighbourhood and is located between the barrios of Olivos and Vicente López, also in the same partido (department).
Location
The city is located between The Autopista Pascual Palazzo (mostly known as "Panamericana" or "Acceso Norte") highway and the Maipú Avenue. The Acceso Norte splits the district into two neighborhoods: Florida Este (from Panamericana to Maipú Avenue) and Florida Oeste (from Panamericana to De los Constituyentes Avenue).
Florida is served by the Mitre Line, which provides easy access to the city of Buenos Aires. Due to the railway lines, Este and Oeste neighborhoods are also called "Florida Mitre" or "Florida Belgrano". Its main commercial area is centered on General San Martín avenue.
History
Florida was founded in 1891 when the Buenos Aires and Rosario Railway opened a station in the section from Belgrano that then reached Bartolomé Mitre, Borges and San Isidro. Some versions state that the station (and subsequently the village) was named "Florida" to commemorate a victory over Spanish army in the Paraje La Florida of Alto Perú on May 25, 1814, during the War of Independence.
The station is located below the Avinguda Catalunya, between the Carrer Ceravalls and Carrer Mimoses. It has two entrances, from the Placa Blocs Florida and the Avinguda Masnou, which serve an underground ticket hall. The two 98-metre (322ft) long side platforms are at a lower level.
The Florida scrub jay is gregarious, highly intelligent, and also a true native...one of Florida's only endemic birds. So why isn't the Florida scrub jay our State Bird? Good question. We wonder the same thing.

Hi guys this is Erica from Gokce Capital. Now before I begin, be sure to click subscribe and turn on the notification bell. The dust falls from the back of Carl Miller's silver pickup.
As he races to deliver his Precious Cargo. What is in the back of Carl's car? We'll learn more at the end of this video but first, if you plan to develop property in Florida watch out for Scrub Jays and in today's video you have top things you should know.
Number one, what is the Florida scrub J? The Florida scrub J is a round-headed blue and gray bird that lives exclusively in the state of Florida. It occurs in patches of low-growing scrub Oack in Sandy soil and is on the endangered species list scrub.
J numbers are very low and in fact, the population has continued to decline even after its listings. Number two, how do Florida scrub J habitats impact landowners? Well, all Florida land in scrubby areas must be surveyed for Jays before the land can be altered.
I Scrub Jays aren't present then development can continue as usual but if they are the federal government requires an incidental take permit before you can impact habitat. Number three, what is an incidental take permit and how can you get it? An incidental take permit is issued by the U.S. fish and wildlife service.
It is sought when a non-federal entity believes that its activities may impact an endangered or threatened species. To get an incidental take permit, first, have a qualified biologist. Conduct a survey of your land during the nesting season.
This is between March to October then submit the survey to your local U.S. fish and wildlife Service office. If the survey indicates that there are jays or J habitats on your land. You will likely need to create a habitat conservation plan.
This plan will describe your proposed construction activity. Its impacts on the Jays and how you plan to mitigate or minimize those impacts. The first and wildlife service finds that your plan meets their criteria then you may be allowed to proceed with your construction activities and number four.
What can you do to help the Florida Scrub Jay? As we said even though the Florida Scrub J is listed as an endangered species. It is still in Decline but there are some things that you can do to help.
If you are a property owner in a place where Jays live you can plant scrub and keep your vegetation at a maximum height of 10. Feet keep pets away from any JR-restrictive pesticide. Use your land and support the establishment of Florida scrub J preserves so that cover the basics of the Florida scrub J and how they impact you.
But now let's return to Carl Miller. On that day in Southern Florida's balmy winter, Carl was driving down the dirt trails of the Jonathan Dickinson State Park. He was there to deliver one carrier with a bonded pair of wild Scrub Jays collected from the Asala National Forest four hours North.
Now let me pause the moment and say if you've been wondering. It is really necessary to place restrictions on development to save this bird. Here's the answer.
Though pockets of protected land do exist to provide shelter for Scrub Jays.

The Florida Scrub Jay is the state’s only endemic bird.
The oldest Florida Scrub Jay recorded was at least 15 years old when it was captured and released during a banding operation in Florida in the 1990s.
Since then, several studies have been done about these birds and their habits.
Here’s what you should know.

‘The Florida Scrub-Jay will fascinate you with its tale of fire, hidden acorns and island history,’ begins Archbold’s new 20 minute film 'At Home in the Florida Scrub' featuring the federally Threatened Florida Scrub-Jay. Twenty minutes fly by as Archbold’s Education Coordinator Dustin Angell brings viewers into the Florida Scrub-Jay’s curious world. Enjoy the flight and please share this educational film far and wide!
This film was a co-production between Archbold Biological Station (www.archbold-station.org) and Into Nature Films (www.IntoNatureFilms.org).
Wildlife Artist Geoffrey C Smith captured the exciting behavior of the native Florida Scrub-Jay in Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Nature is hidden all around you.
Enjoying biking with his boys and trying to find the elusive Florida Scrub Jay, Geoffrey Smith spent five days at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. The Scrub Jay is an endangered bird with a population of 7,000 to 9,000 birds statewide. In Jonathan Dickinson State Park there is close to 500 residing in the 11,500-acre park - the largest protected Scrub Jay habitat in Southeast Florida. Geoffrey was able to video capture the Scrub Jays for several days in their natural habitat. A very inquisitive bird that will approach you quite closely. They are very social and one of the few birds that mate for life. They work in a large family social group to raise their young and watch for predators.
Be Well, Be Safe, Be Loved, Geoffrey C Smith.

While out photographing the Florida Scrub Jays this bird landed on my head. Bird watching in Florida is amazing. This little trail we found was amazing. You would be walking along and the scrub jay would land on your hat.
