A well-known engine of this type is the Porsche air-cooled flat-8 engine. It was introduced as a 1.5 litre engine for Formula One, and grew to a 3-litre version used in the Porsche 908.
Continental and Lycoming have both produced flat-8 aircraft engines. The Lycoming IO-720 and Continental IO-720 series of engines have been in production for several decades.
Flat-eights and flat-sixes compared
A flat-8 is marginally smoother than a flat-6, but since both types are exceptionally smooth, it is normally simpler and cheaper to specify a flat-6. The main reason to use a flat-8 would be if the engine's cubic capacity is such that the cylinder size in a flat-6 would be greater than optimal. For instance, the AustralianJabiru Aircraft company makes three different boxer air-cooledaircraft engines: a 2.2 litre flat-4, a 3.3 litre flat-6, and a 5.1 litre flat-8. A 5.1 litre flat-8 has eight cylinders of 638cc, whereas a 5.1 litre flat-six would have cylinders of 850cc.

How 8-Cylinder Engine Works? Inline-8 vs V8 vs Flat-8 | Explained
Inline-8 Engine:
The inline-eight engine is an eight-cylinder internal combustion engine with all eight cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankshaft.
Eight-cylinder engines have been produced in various configurations, including, side-valve, Intake-over-exhaust, overhead-valve, sleeve-valve, and overhead-cam configurations.
V8 Engine:
Each configuration has its own advantages and disadvantages and has been used in different applications depending on the specific needs of the vehicle. For example, overhead-valve and overhead-cam configurations are commonly used in high-performance sports cars, while side-valve configurations were popular in early automobiles. Sleeve-valve engines were also used in some luxury cars in the early 20th century.

Different Flat & Boxer Engine Configurations Explained | Flat-Twin to Flat-16
A flat engine is also a horizontally opposed piston engine with cylinders on either side of a central crankshaft.
Most flat engines use a "boxer" configuration because the movement of the engine's pistons resembles the action of a boxer's fists in the horizontal plane. However, unlike the boxer's fists, which both moves in the same direction, half of the 'Boxer' engine's pistons move in the opposite direction. Boxer engines have low vibrations since they are the only common configuration with no unbalanced forces, regardless of the number of cylinders.
Flat engines have been used in aviation, motorcycle, and automobile applications. They are now less common in cars than straight engines and V engines (for eng...
This video is about a gorgeous Porsche 908 LH I saw at Imola Classic a few days ago. The car should be chassis number #004 which raced in the 1968 Monza 1000 km by Ludovico Scarfiotti
and Gerhard Mitter.
The car is one of the few 908 LH ("Langheck" which means "Long Tail" in german) that originally was built with a steel chassis instead of the aluminium one. It's powered by a 3.0-litre flat-8 engine which is able to produce 335 bhp at 8500 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 6600 rpm.

Engine Simulator - Flat Eight Crossplane
This is a flat-eight engine built in @AngeTheGreat's Engine Sim.
The firing order shown here is 14738526 (with cylinder numbers the same as on an LS), because I found it the most mathematically pleasing; however, as with crossplane V8 engines, multiple firing orders are possible.
Bore, stroke, other dimensions, and camshaft specs are recycled from an early version of a Honda C32B simulation I did because it was one of my most powerful engines per liter.

In this video you see a pretty rare 1968 Porsche 908 LH Long Tail warming up its engine during Imola Classic. This historic Le Mans car is powered by a 3.0 litre flat-8 engine which sounds amazing! Make sure you turn up your speakers and enjoy the video!

A V8 engine is an eight-cylinder piston engine in which two banks of four cylinders share a common crankshaft and are arranged in a V configuration. V8 engines are known for their power and smooth operation. The V shape of the engine allows it to be more compact than an inline eight-cylinder engine, while still providing ample power.
The even number of cylinders also ensures that the engine is balanced, reducing vibrations and providing a smoother ride. The angle between the two banks of cylinders can vary, but it is typically around 90 degrees. This angle results in good engine balance, which results in low vibrations.
Flat-8 Engine:
A flat-eight engine, also called a horizontally-opposed eight, is an eight-cylinder piston engine with two banks of four inline cylinders, one on each side of a central crankshaft, 180° apart. The term "flat" refers to the cylinder layout, where the cylinders lie flat and are positioned horizontally rather than being upright or inclined.
The cylinders are positioned horizontally, with the pistons moving in and out in opposite directions. This configuration creates a balanced engine design with a lower center of gravity, which can result in improved stability and handling for vehicles. A boxer-eight engine is a special case of a flat-eight where each piston's connecting rod has its own journal, and each pair of opposed pistons moves inwards or outwards at the same time.

They are now less common in cars than straight engines and V engines (for engines with six or more cylinders). They are much more common in aircraft, where straight engines are a rarity, and V engines have almost vanished except in historic aircraft. And They have even replaced radial engines in many smaller installations.
The advantages of flat engines are a short length, low center of mass, and suitability for air cooling.
The most common flat-twin engines are:
Flat-twin engines: A flat-twin engine is a two-cylinder IC engine with the cylinders on opposite sides of the crankshaft, where both cylinders move inwards and outwards simultaneously.
Flat-4 engines: A four-cylinder piston engine with two banks of cylinders lying on opposite sides of a common crankshaft. Most flat-four engines are designed so that each pair of opposing pistons moves inwards and outwards simultaneously. The terms "flat-four" and "boxer-four" are often used synonymously.
Flat-6 engines: It is a six-cylinder piston engine with three cylinders on each side of a central crankshaft, where each pair of opposed cylinders moves inwards and outwards simultaneously.
Flat-8 engines: A flat-eight engine is an eight-cylinder piston engine with two banks of four inline cylinders, one on each side of a central crankshaft.
Flat-10 engines: A flat-ten engine is a ten-cylinder piston engine with five cylinders on each side of a central crankshaft.
Flat-12 engines: A flat-twelve engine is a twelve-cylinder piston engine with six cylinders on each side of a central crankshaft.
Flat-16 engines: A flat-sixteen engine is a sixteen-cylinder piston engine with eight cylinders on each side of a central crankshaft.
