Film preservation

Film preservation, or film restoration, describes a series of ongoing efforts among film historians, archivists, museums, cinematheques, and non-profit organizations to rescue decaying film stock and preserve the images which they contain. In the widest sense, preservation nowadays assures that a movie will continue to exist in as close to its original form as possible.

For many years the term 'preservation' was synonymous with 'duplication' of film. The goal of a preservationist was to create a durable copy without any significant loss of quality. In more modern terms, film preservation now includes the concepts of handling, duplication, storage, and access. The archivist seeks to protect the film and share the content with the public.

Film preservation is not to be confused with film revisionism, in which long-completed films are subjected to outtakes never previously seen being inserted, newly inserted music scores or sound effects being added, black-and-white film being colorized or converted to Dolby stereo, or minor edits and other cosmetic changes being made.

All film stocks decompose over time. Sometimes this decomposition is irreversible — which explains why an estimated 75% of American silent films are considered lost. We visited The George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, to see how its team rescues old movies and restores them to their former glory. The Eastman Museum runs one of the world's top film-preservation programs. Its archives of over 28,000 films include the personal collections of directors like Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese and carefully controlled nitrate vaults containing over 26 million feet of film. The museum's preservation projects include the silent films of Cecil B. DeMille and Georges Méliès, along with Stanley Kubrick's first film, "Fear and Desire," from 1953, and Orson Welles' once-lost work "Too Much Johnson," from 1938. Its recent restoration of the 1935 Oscar Micheaux film "Murder in Harlem" screened at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. If it weren’t for the fact that YouTube doesn’t allow videos to get updated after upload (and the fact that I’ve already deleted these project files since there’s no reason to keep like 300gb of assets laying around), I totally would have updated these things already. Also, be sure to watch the video in 4K for the clearest view of what I'm talking about since YouTube shredded the video quality. Movies. What are they? Moving images. Oh, okay. Yeah, that was fast. Well, why don't they look right when you watch them at home! There's a million reasons (it helps to turn the TV on first, Aunt Edie), but two of the main reasons is because they've been recolored and degrained. Why? All film stocks decompose over time. Sometimes this decomposition is irreversible — which explains why an estimated 75% of American silent films are considered lost. We visited The George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, to see how its team rescues old movies and restores them to their former glory. The Eastman Museum runs one of the world's top film-preservation programs. Its archives of over 28,000 films include the personal collections of directors like Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese and carefully controlled nitrate vaults containing over 26 million feet of film. The museum's preservation projects include the silent films of Cecil B. DeMille and Georges Méliès, along with Stanley Kubrick's first film, "Fear and Desire," from 1953, and Orson Welles' once-lost work "Too Much Johnson," from 1938. Its recent restoration of the 1935 Oscar Micheaux film "Murder in Harlem" screened at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Film preservation

Film preservation, or film restoration, describes a series of ongoing efforts among film historians, archivists, museums, cinematheques, and non-profit organizations to rescue decaying film stock and preserve the images which they contain. In the widest sense, preservation nowadays assures that a movie will continue to exist in as close to its original form as possible.

For many years the term 'preservation' was synonymous with 'duplication' of film. The goal of a preservationist was to create a durable copy without any significant loss of quality. In more modern terms, film preservation now includes the concepts of handling, duplication, storage, and access. The archivist seeks to protect the film and share the content with the public.

Film preservation is not to be confused with film revisionism, in which long-completed films are subjected to outtakes never previously seen being inserted, newly inserted music scores or sound effects being added, black-and-white film being colorized or converted to Dolby stereo, or minor edits and other cosmetic changes being made.
