Why do we, like, hesitate when we, um, speak? - Lorenzo García-Amaya
Why do we fill pauses in speech with words like “um,” “uh,” and “like”? Dig into the hesitation phenomenon to find out their linguistic significance.
--
For as long as we’ve had language, some people have tried to control it. And some of the most frequent targets of this communication regulation are the ums, ers, and likes that pepper our conversations. These linguistic fillers occur roughly 2 to 3 times per minute in natural speech. So are ums and uhs just a habit we can’t break? Or is there more to them? Lorenzo García-Amaya investigates.

Italian Filler Words and Interjections 🔥🇮🇹
7 Italian filler words & interjections 🔥🇮🇹
It’s the filler words and interjections that make you sound more natural in Italian.
1. Instead of saying 'Non lo so' (I don’t know), say, 'Boh!' and shrug your shoulders.
2. When annoyed or confused, say ‘Uffa!’. This means, ‘Damn!’ or ‘How annoying!’
3. To change the topic or make a rebuttal, say ‘Allora’, this means ‘so’, ‘well’, ‘then’, or, ‘in that case’.
4. When seeing someone you know well, greet them with a ‘Ehi!’ which is the Italian version of saying ‘Hey!’ or ‘Yo!’.
5. Not sure about something, say, Mah! This means ‘Who knows!’.
6. When giving your opinion or making a point, say ‘Be!’. This is short for bene, similar to the English ‘Well…’.
7. Thinking while you speak? Instead of saying the English 'hmm' or 'mmm', say 'ehm' or ...

When we speak continuously we end up using gap fillers. These words are short phrases and are used when we fall short of words. You would commonly come across people who end up making vocal sounds to keep a conversation going such as 'umm', 'ahhh' or 'ohhh' etc., They end up up doing this subconsciously but it’s better to avoid them as they are signs of weakness.
Here in this lesson we don’t encourage you to use fillers, but there are times when we hesitate in the middle of a conversation and search for words to keep going. Here are some expressions that you can use as fillers:
Tell me something
Wow
Well
You see
By the way
No way
Certainly/ Surely
Exactly
Basically
To be honest
All the above expressions help you to buy time and avoid that awkward silence when you are falling short of words.
There are situations when someone asks you a question and you are not able to answer straight forwardly, then please don’t give up, just repeat the question and add well, ......( helps you to buy time)
Eg) what do you think about this movie?
Repeat the question .........well, ........You know, I think it was a little boring and stereo type.
Enjoy the Lesson! Good luck to learn English!

Instead of saying the English 'hmm' or 'mmm', say 'ehm' or 'eh'.
Which one of these will you start using first? Let me know in the comments. 💬👇

Using too many Filler Words in your Speech?
Learn how you can reduce the Ahs and Ums while speaking.
Get rid of the Ahs and Ums in the speech that makes you unconfident while delivering a speech.
Every time you have to give a speech or introduce yourself to others, you want to do your best, but when the time comes, your body temperature rises and your pulse rate quickens.
As you start to deliver the speech while experiencing all of these emotions, it begins to resemble more of a marathon race than actually delivering the speech since you are so anxious to end it.
You may have also experienced such situations when not only do you speak very fast but to speak fast you may forget or skip some points in your speech, and all these things make you more uncomfortable and unconfident.
In this video, we have explained how you can deal with such high-pressure situations, and how to be more confident while presenting. Along with that, when we forget something or don't know what we are talking about, we say Ahs and Ums.
These are called Filler Words. Excessive use of these words can make the audience confused about what you are saying and they might also think you are wasting their time.
To avoid using these words in your speech, you can slow down your pace of speaking and can also add pauses in your speech so that you will be more relaxed and look confident while speaking.
