The Railways of Kinross were a local network of three rural railways which made the town of Kinross in Scotland their objective in the 1859s.
They were
the Fife and Kinross Railway from Ladybank to Kinross;
the Kinross-shire Railway from near Cowdenbeath to Kinross; and
the Devon Valley Railway from Tillicoultry to Kinross, although the last-named was not completed until 1872.
These single-track rural lines became part of the main line network when the first Tay Bridge was opened in 1878, and then the Forth Bridge in 1890. For the Forth Bridge route two new sections of route were constructed, a cut-off line near Cowdenbeath, and the Glenfarg line connecting Mawcarse and Bridge of Earn, near Perth. All the local passenger services were discontinued by 1964, and the through Glenfarg route to Perth closed in 1970.
History
Kinross
In the interior of the country, Kinross, the county town of Kinross-shire, had developed little before the railway age. By 1829 its population was only 7,762 and cotton weaving had only lately become the industry.
It is a lieutenancy area, and was a county of Scotland until 1975. It was very occasionally known by the anglicisationFifeshire in old documents and maps compiled by English cartographers and authors. A person from Fife is known as a Fifer.
Fife is Scotland's third largest local authority area by population. It has a resident population of just under 367,000, almost a third of whom live in the three principal towns of Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes.
A fife/ˈfaɪf/ is a small, high-pitched, transverse flute, that is similar to the piccolo, but louder and shriller due to its narrower bore. The fife originated in medieval Europe and is often used in military and marching bands. Someone who plays the fife is called a fifer. The word fife comes from the GermanPfeife, or pipe, which comes from the Latin word pipare.
The fife is a simple instrument usually consisting of a tube with 6 finger holes, and diatonically tuned. Some have 10 or 11 holes for added chromatics. The fife also has an embouchure hole, across which the player blows, and a cork or plug inside the tube just above the embouchure hole. Some nineteenth-century fifes had a key pressed by the little finger of the right hand in place of a seventh finger hole.
This attractive former market town was originally linked by railway to Perthshire, Fife and Clackmannanshire until the rail links gradually disappeared. At one time three independent railway companies had their termini at the town. The Fife and Kinross Railway came from the east, the Kinross-shire Railway came from the south and The Devon Valley Railway came from the west. Recently Kinross has expanded considerably, especially since the construction of the M90 motorway - the main north-south artery which bypasses the town. Many people working within a commuting radius of Kinross have settled in the town owing to its convenient central location and excellent local amenities. Loch Leven is also a popular holiday base for tourists, who especially appreciate its proximity to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Perth and St Andrews (all lying within an hour's drive of Kinross). The burgh is attractively located on the shores of Loch Leven, and there are boat trips around the loch and to Loch Leven Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was famously held prisoner in 1567.
The small barons and freeholders were first authorised to elect "commissioners of the shire" to represent them in Parliament by an act of King James I in 1428; the sheriffdom of Kinross was to be represented by one commissioner. This act, however, remained inoperative, and the representation of the shires was not established until 1587.
For many years the majority of Kinross-shire was owned by the Earl of Morton and the Lord Balfour of Burleigh, who already sat in Parliament as peers. There was therefore no commissioner for the shire, except during the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland when the sheriffdoms of Fife and Kinross were jointly represented by one Member of Parliament at Westminster from 1654 to 1659. This situation continued until the 1670s when Lord Morton's estate of Kinross, comprising most of the shire, was purchased by Sir William Bruce of Balcaskie. Having been elected commissioner, Bruce was allowed to represent the shire according to former custom, by Royal Letter of 13 August 1681.
I seem to be on a quest to try as many different wind instruments as possible, and this time I have a go at the fife!
I’ve been teaching myself to play the recorder for a few months, with no real previous musical knowledge, so I’m definitely no expert… but it’s good fun finding out about different instruments.
This is the Yamaha YRF-21 fife, and for the low price (around £12) it seems like a pretty cool thing!

Hoggs of Fife Aonach Boot
The Hoggs of Fife Aonach boot is a fully waterproof and breathable field boot design to keep your feet comfortable and dry all day. This is a fairly lightweight boot featuring a removable memory foam insole and padded ankle.
The Hoggs of Fife Aonach field boot has been designed using soft anfibio leather, and soft waterproof fabric tongue for comfort. The padded high leg is soft on the ankle and the quick lacing system ensure you get the right tension and fit. Plus, the added anti-tendonitis system on back of the boot removes any tendon pressure.
The Vibram sole unit gives plenty of grip and traction and the additional rand on the boot protects the leather from moisture and damage.

They were
the Fife and Kinross Railway from Ladybank to Kinross;
the Kinross-shire Railway from near Cowdenbeath to Kinross; and
the Devon Valley Railway from Tillicoultry to Kinross, although the last-named was not completed until 1872.
