Indianische Fantasie, Op. 44 (1913-14)
Dedication: Natalie Curtis
1. Fantasy (0:00)
2. Canzona (12:00)
3. Finale (20:55)
Description by Adrian Corleonis [-]
The Indian Fantasy looms as a sport in which the composer -- in reaction to the occult nature of the path opening before him -- casts off the mantle of the alchemist in sound and most subtle of the makers of modernism to embrace the model of Liszt's Hungarian Fantasy for piano and orchestra, that is, a mélange of Nativist exotica and scene painting whipped up in broad strokes with virtuosic flair. On tour in New York in 1910 he ran across Natalie Curtis, a wealthy and talented former pupil, who presented him with a copy of her just published Indians' Book, a groundbreaking collection of "Redskin" melodies that fired Busoni's ambition to employ them. In three extensive continuous movements, the Indian Fantasy was composed between April 1913 and February 1914. Inescapably, the pentatonic character of the melodies produces Indianist cliché chiming risibly -- but at moments with startling visionary eloquence -- with oddments of Busoni's Modernist style. Busoni took the piano for its premiere with the Berlin Philharmonic on March 12, 1914. Only in the orchestral Gesang vom Reigen der Geister (1915) would Busoni's modernism meld persuasively with "Redskin" materials.

The Piano Concerto in C major, Op. 39 (BV 247), by Ferruccio Busoni, is one of the largest works ever written in this genre. The concerto lasts around 70 minutes and is in five movements; in the final movement a male chorus sings words from the final scene of the verse drama Aladdin by Adam Oehlenschläger, who also wrote the words of one of the Danish national anthems.
The first performance of the concerto took place in the Beethoven-Saal, Berlin, Germany, on November 10, 1904, at one of Busoni's own concerts of modern music. Busoni was the soloist, with Karl Muck conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Choir of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche). The reviews were decidedly mixed, some being filled with outright hostility or derision. The century following its premiere has seen relatively few performances, owing to the large orchestration, complex musical texture, the use of a male chorus, and the staggering demands put on the soloist.
It seems to have been Beethoven who first included a chorus in a concerted work with piano and orchestra, in his Choral Fantasy, Op. 80, of 1808, since then only a handful of works have been scored for similar forces, including Daniel Steibelt's Piano Concerto No. 8 (first performed March 16, 1820, in Saint Petersburg) and the Piano Concerto No. 6, Op. 192 (1858) by Henri Herz which also have a choral finale.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote of this recital by pianist Hélène Grimaud at the Kammer Musiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonie, “She doesn’t only play the piano - she feels it and she lives it. Every single note proves her devotion to perfection ... her unconventional style captivates everyone in the audience.”
Arguably one of the very top pianists of her generation, her concert career took off in 1987 when she was in her early twenties and she now performs with major orchestras around the world as well as being in demand for recital appearances. The spontaneity of her playing is breathtaking. Not to be afraid of taking risks and always to play as though it is the first time is Hélène Grimaud’s maxim.
Her program for this recording features Bach’s Chaconne in D minor, Beethoven’s Sonata No. 31 in A flat Op. 110, and Brahms’ Sonata No. 3 in F minor Op. 5. As encores, she plays two of Rachmaninov’s Etudes-tableaux Op. 33.
