Fergana Region (Uzbek:Farg‘ona viloyati, Russian:Ферганская область) is one of the regions of Uzbekistan, located in the southern part of the Fergana Valley in the far east of the country. It borders the Namangan and Andijan Regions of Uzbekistan, as well as Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It covers an area of 6,800km2. The population is estimated to be around 2,597,000, with over 71% of the population living in rural areas.
Districs
Fergana Region is divided into 15 administrative districts. The capital is the city of Fergana.
Fergana Region has a typically continental climate with extreme differences between winter and summer temperatures.
It used to be called ferghana, during the Kushan empire. The ancient kingdom referred to as Dayuan (大宛, "Great Yuan", literally "Great Ionians") in the Chinese chronicles is now generally accepted as being in the Ferghana Valley. It is sometimes, though less commonly, written as Dawan (大宛). Dayuan were Greeks, the descendants of the Greek colonists that were settled by Alexander the Great in Ferghana in 329 BCE, and prospered within the Hellenistic realm of the Seleucids and Greco-Bactrians, until they were isolated by the migrations of the Yuezhi around 160 BCE. It has been suggested that the name "Yuan" was simply a transliteration of the words “Yona”, or “Yavana”, used throughout antiquity in Asia to designate Greeks (“Ionians”). Their capital was Alexandria Eschate.
Life in the provinces of Central Asia (Osh, Fergana Valley)
Life in the provinces of Central Asia. Osh, is located in the complex, ethnically diverse Fergana Valley, in the south of Kyrgyzstan, along the border with Uzbekistan. Despite being located in Kyrgyzstan, it is a majority Uzbek city. Known for its rich Silk Road history, chequered recent history and of course, its incredible food - Osh is a melting point and a snapshot of the entire Fergana Valley itself. Exploring this provincial city, hearing about the history, chatting with the locals and trying the food was the best way to kick off our Silk Road adventure in to Uzbekistan!

The Greco-Chinese War Over the Heavenly Horses
In our previous animated historical documentary we have talked about the Ancient Greek state in Bactria (http://bit.ly/2RJpa5u), but this Hellenistic state had to fight a number of wars after the conquests of Alexander. The Greeks of the region (Dayuan) were discovered by China during the expedition of the traveler Zhang Qian and had to fight against the Han dynasty during the War of the Heavenly horses between 104 and 101 BC. this war changed the fate of the region, and contributed to the creation of the Silk Road.
