Best upgrade for an old #gaming laptop! (HP Pavilion Gaming #pc) #tech #technology #shorts
This HP gaming laptop is getting some upgrades! This computer is running slow because of the old mechanical HDD that’s being used as a boot drive. So I’m going to replace it with an NVMe to take this pc to the next level. Along with some more RAM, a new battery, and thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, this tech may be 4 years old, but it’s running better than new. Just a little work can take your outdated technology and bring it up to date!

This is what getting your own gaming pc actually feels like from my first experience! So you’ve just bought everything and you're ready to build the computer, the only problem is you don’t know how! Almost breaking it you watch some tutorials and slowly bit by bit, you start to make progress, and as you get closer to finishing the computer the anticipation rises to unprecedented levels, you begin to doubt if the pc will work or not and whether you’ve done it right. Nervously you power it on for the first time, and it works!!! After a few minutes of messing around with the RGB software you boot up the most intensive game, Minecraft. And boy does it run well. Computer science is the subject that studies what computers can do and investigates the best ways you can solve the problems of the world with them. It is a huge field overlapping pure mathematics, engineering and many other scientific disciplines. In this video I summarise as much of the subject as I can and show how the areas are related to each other.

A couple of notes on this video:
1. Some people have commented that I should have included computer security alongside hacking, and I completely agree, that was an oversight on my part. Apologies to all the computer security professionals, and thanks for all the hard work!
2. I also failed to mention interpreters alongside compilers in the complier section. Again, I’m kicking myself because of course this is an important concept for people to hear about. Also the layers of languages being compiled to other languages is overly convoluted, in practice it is more simple than this. I guess I should have picked one simple example.
3. NP-complete problems are possible to solve, they just become very difficult to solve very quickly as they get bigger. When I said NP-complete and then "impossible to solve", I meant that the large NP-complete problems that industry is interested in solving were thought to be practically impossible to solve.

Check out the comments for more.

Rapid Construction of Supervised Word Sense Disambiguation System for Lesser-resourced Languages
We introduce a method to quickly build a Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) system for a lesser-resourced language L, under the condition that a Statistical Machine Transation system (SMT) is available from a well resourced language where semantically annotated corpora are available (here, English) towards L. We argue that it is less difficult to obtain the resources mandatory for the development of an SMT system (parallel-corpora) than it is to create the resources necessary for a WSD system (semantically annotated corpora, lexical resources). In the present work, we propose to translate a semantically annotated corpus from English to L and then to create a WSD system for L following the classical supervised WSD paradigm. We demonstrate the feasibility and genericity of our proposed method b...

Adjusting sense representations for knowledge-based word sense disambiguation
Speaker: Tristan Miller, Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany)
Abstract: Word sense disambiguation (WSD) – the task of determining which meaning a word carries in a particular context – is a core research problem in computational linguistics. Though it has long been recognized that supervised (i.e., machine learning–based) approaches to WSD can yield impressive results, they require an amount of manually annotated training data that is often too expensive or impractical to obtain. This is a particular problem for under-resourced languages and text domains, and is also a hurdle in well-resourced languages when processing the sort of lexical-semantic anomalies employed for deliberate effect in humour and wordplay. In contrast to supervised systems are knowledge-based techniques, whi...

KGC 2022: KG-Based Approach to Named Entity Disambiguation for Healthcare Applications — GraphAware
Senior Data Scientist at GraphAware, Giuseppe Futia, shows how to leverage a Named Entity Disambiguation (NED) system to disambiguate named entities in the healthcare domain and combine multiple knowledge graphs and ontologies in a single valuable source of truth.
The approach incorporates node embeddings into the NED model, employing the KG structure for the training process.
The tool can support different healthcare applications, including literature search and retrieval, clinical decision-making, relational knowledge findings, chatbots for health assistance, and recommendation tools for patients and medical practitioners.
Giuseppe Futia holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, where he explored Graph Representation Learning techniques to support the auto...

NWDS Talk - Bootleg: Chasing the Tail with Self-Supervised Named Entity Disambiguation
Presented by Laurel Orr
See more Northwest Database Society talks here:
http://db.cs.washington.edu/nwds/nwds.html
Abstract:
Named Entity Disambiguation (NED) is the task of mapping textual mentions to entities in a database. A key challenge in NED is generalizing to rarely seen entities, termed tail entities. Traditional NED systems use hand-tuned features to improve tail generalization, but these features make the system challenging to deploy and maintain. In 2018, a subset of the authors built and deployed a self-supervised NED system at a major technology company, which improved performance over its hand-tuned predecessor. Motivated to understand the core reasons for this improvement, we introduce Bootleg, a clean-slate, open-source, self-supervised NED system. In this talk, w...

We demonstrate the feasibility and genericity of our proposed method by translating SemCor from English to Bangla and from English to French. SemCor is an English corpus annotated with Princeton WordNet sense tags. We show the feasibility of the approach using the Multilingual WSD task from Semeval 2013.

In contrast to supervised systems are knowledge-based techniques, which rely only on pre-existing lexical-semantic resources (LSRs) such as dictionaries and thesauri. These techniques are of more general applicability but tend to suffer from lower performance due to the informational gap between the target word's context and the sense descriptions provided by the LSR. In this seminar, we treat the task of extending the efficacy and applicability of knowledge-based WSD, both generally and for the particular case of English puns. In the first part of the talk, we present two approaches for bridging the information gap and thereby improving WSD coverage and accuracy. In the first approach, we supplement the word's context and the LSR's sense descriptions with entries from a distributional thesaurus. The second approach enriches an LSR's sense information by aligning it to other, complementary LSRs. In the second part of the talk, we describe how these techniques, along with evaluation methodologies from traditional WSD, can be adapted for the "disambiguation" of puns, or rather for the automatic identification of their double meanings.

Disambiguation or Entity Linking is the assignment of a knowledge base identifier (Wikidata, Wikipedia) to a named entity. Our goal was to improve an MVP model by adding newly created knowledge while maintaining competitive F1 scores.
Taking an entity linking model from MVP into production in a spaCy-native pipeline architecture posed several data science and engineering challenges, such as hyperparameter estimation and knowledge enhancement, which we addressed by taking advantage of the engineering tools Docker and Kubernetes to semi-automate training as an on-demand job.
We also discuss some of our learnings and process improvements that were needed to strike a balance between data science goals and engineering constraints and present our current work on improving performance through BERT-embedding based contextual similarity.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of
Alberta where researchers interested in AI can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems, are explored.
Bio: Yixing Luan is a thesis-based M.Sc. candidate in Computing Science at the University of Alberta, supervised by Dr. Greg Kondrak. His research interest includes artificial intelligence and natural language processing with a focus on lexical semantics. He completed his bachelor's degree at Hokkaido University, Japan.
Abstract: Word sense disambiguation (WSD) is one of the core tasks in Natural Language Processing and its objective is to identify the correct sense of a content word in context. Although WSD is a monolingual task, it has been conjectured that multilingual information, e.g. translations, can be helpful. However, existing WSD systems rarely consider multilingual information, and no effective method has been proposed for improving WSD with machine translation. In this work, we propose methods of leveraging translations from multiple languages as a constraint to boost the accuracy of existing WSD systems. To this end, we also develop a novel knowledge-based word alignment algorithm, which outperforms an existing word alignment tool in our intrinsic and extrinsic evaluations. Since our approach is language-independent, we perform WSD experiments on standard benchmark datasets representing several languages. The results demonstrate that our methods can consistently improve the performance of various WSD systems, and obtain state-of-the-art results in both English and multilingual WSD.

Giuseppe Futia holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, where he explored Graph Representation Learning techniques to support the automatic building of Knowledge Graphs.
The 5 key takeaways:
1. The components and requirements of the Intelligent Advisory Systems (IAS).
2. How they use Hume, the Neo4j-backed no-code knowledge graph ecosystem.
3. Delving into diabetes real-life use cases and linking to the Unified Medical Language System.
4. How GraphAware utilizes ontology-based enrichment for their knowledge graph-based approach.
5. The cooperation of NED candidates selections and NED candidates ranking.

In this talk, we'll show how to succeed on the tail by reasoning over structured data. We demonstrate that Bootleg matches or exceeds state-of-the-art performance on three NED benchmarks and that the learned representations from Bootleg demonstrate up to 8% performance lift in a production task. Finally, we observe that embeddings from self-supervised models like Bootleg are increasingly being served to downstream applications, creating an embedding ecosystem. We initiate the study of the data management challenges associated with this ecosystem.
