Portugal welcomed tourists from the UK and EU nations with low infection rates at the Faro airport on Monday, as the country reopened its borders to non-essential travels.
The Faro airport, located in the southern part of the country saw its first international passengers heading to the neighbouring Atlantic coast beach resorts.
"For us, it is very important this day because it marks the economy. Algarve has a huge dependence on tourism activity. We are talking about a region that has over 60 percent of the employment and the gross added value related directly or indirectly to tourism," said Alberto Mota Borges, director of Faro Airport.
"It feels amazing to be out and to just be part of the world again," shared a British traveller.

Landing runway 28 Faro Airport (FAO LPFR).
**This flight was prior the Corona crisis**
Today we start during our decent towards Faro Airport (Portugal). Prior our descent Faro had LOVIS in progress. We had prepared for an CAT II automatic approach but had briefed to continue manual if visibility was sufficient. During our descent we received the message that LOVIS was cancelled. Passing the 1000ft I decided to continue manual.

Excited holidaymakers head to Portugal after travel restrictions lift
Thousands of people have departed on international flights after the ban on foreign holidays was lifted for people in Britain.
Travel firms welcomed the boost in demand but called for coronavirus restrictions to be eased for more destinations.
Portugal, one of just a handful of destinations on the Government’s quarantine-free green list, will welcome 16 flights from England at Faro Airport in the Algarve on Monday.
Tui is using aircraft normally reserved for long-haul routes to accommodate the surge of passengers.
But Sir Jeremy Farrar, director of The Wellcome Trust charity, warned there “is a risk” that the coronavirus variant first identified in India could be transmitted by people travelling out of the UK.
“I think travel should still be very cautious and only when absolutely esse...

"For us, it is very important this day because it marks the economy. Algarve has a huge dependence on tourism activity. "It feels amazing to be out and to just be part of the world again," shared a British traveller.
Passengers undertaking non-essential travel to Portugal must present upon boarding proof of a negative COVID-19 test made within 72 hours before travel.
Only visitors from European countries presenting less than 500 cases of infections per 100,000 people will be allowed into the country.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Alberto Mota Borges, Director of Faro Airport: "For us it is very important this day because it marks the economy. Algarve has a huge dependence of tourism activity. We are talking about a region that has over 60 percent of the employment and the gross added value related directly or indirectly to tourism, so this day is amazing also because we are receiving tourists from our main markets."
SOT, Traveller: "Our experience coming over here was absolutely fantastic. Luton Airport was superb, all the security was *inaudible*, everyone has masks. It feels amazing to be out and to just be part of the world again, post-COVID."
SOT, Traveller: "Coming through passport control was wonderful. No problems, it took four minutes to get through passport control. Everything's safe, everything's wonderful. We enjoy to be in the Portugal."

“I think travel should still be very cautious and only when absolutely essential,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
This comes after Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Times Radio that destinations on the amber list – which includes Spain, France, Italy and Greece – are “places that you shouldn’t go to unless you have an absolutely compelling reason”.
Those who do travel to an amber country are required to quarantine at home for 10 days on their return.
