F Troop is a satirical American television sitcom about U.S. soldiers and American Indians in the Wild West during the 1860s that originally aired for two seasons on ABC. It debuted in the United States on September 14, 1965 and concluded its run on April 6, 1967 with a total of 65 episodes. The first season of 34 episodes was broadcast in black-and-white, the second season in color.
The series relied heavily on character-based humor; verbal and visual gags, slapstick, physical comedy and burlesque comedy make up the prime ingredients of F Troop. The series played fast and loose with historical events and persons, and often parodied them for comical effect. There were some indirect references made to the culture of the 1960s such as a "Playbrave Club" (a parody of a Playboy Club) and imitations of rock and roll bands (including singing songs written in the 1960s).
Setting and story
F Troop is set at Fort Courage — a fictional United States Army outpost in the Old West—from just at the end of the American Civil War in 1865 to at least 1867. There is a town of the same name adjacent to the fort. Fort Courage was named for fictitious General Sam Courage (portrayed by Cliff Arquette), who has been in the Army for forty years. The fort itself is in the stockade style stereotypically found in most American westerns.
The Millwall Bushwackers are a hooligan firm associated with Millwall F.C.. The club and fans of Millwall have a historic association with football hooliganism, which came to prevalence in the 1970s and 1980s with a firm known originally as F-Troop, eventually becoming more widely known as the Millwall Bushwackers, who were one of the most notorious hooligan gangs in England. On five occasions The Den was closed by the Football Association and the club has received numerous fines for crowd disorder. Millwall's hooligans are regarded by their rivals as amongst the stiffest competition, with Manchester United hooligan Colin Blaney describing them as being within the 'top four' firms in his autobiography 'Undesirables' and West Ham hooligan Cass Pennant featuring them on his Top Boys TV YouTube channel, on which this fearsome reputation for violence was described.

It was one of the most popular sitcoms of its time and relied on slapstick, physical comedy, and even burlesque to get its laughs. It was a brilliant show developed by writers Seaman Jacobs, Ed James, and Jim Barnett.
But the real reason the show became a success was because of the stars on-screen. The F-Troop cast was a great ensemble of some of America’s finest actors. Sadly, many of the F-Troop cast members have passed away.
Forrest Tucker, who played Sgt. O’Rourke, passed away in 1986 at the age of 67. He had a reputation for playing villains and he truly did justice to the scheming Sgt. O’Rourke!
In contrast, there was the bumbling Captain Parmenter played by Ken Berry. He passed away at the age of 85 in 2018. He was a prolific actor also known for his word in Mayberry R.F.D.
One of the best characters from the F-Troop cast was the sassy Wrangler Jane played by Melody Patterson. She died of natural causes in 2015. She begun her career with F-Troop and soon became one of the most beloved characters on the show.
James Hampton played the foolhardy Hannibal Dobbs on the show. He also had a great career in films, appearing in The Longest Yard and Teen Wolf. He died at age 84 in 2022.
Frank de Kovawas a Shakespearean actor who had a formidable career on the stage. He played the Native American character Chief Wild Eagle – which became his most famous role. He passed away in 1981 at the age of 71.
Watch this video to learn about the incredible careers of the F-Troop cast and how they died. We’ll also catch up with F-Troop cast member Larry Storch to see what he’s up to nowadays…

The end of the Civil War was near When quite accidentally, A hero who sneezed abruptly seized Retreat and reversed it to victory. His medal of honor pleased and thrilled his proud little family group. While pinning it on some blood was spilled And so it was planned he'd command F Troop. Where Indian fights are colorful sights and nobody takes a lickin' Where pale face and redskin Both turn chicken. When killing and fighting get them down, They know their morale can't droop. As long as they all relax in town Before they resume with a bang and a boom F Troop.
