Most Feared Fighter Jet of the Vietnam War - F-4 Phantom
The F-4 Phantom is often regarded as the deadliest fighter in Vietnam. This tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber became one of the Vietnam War's most recognizable and feared planes.
The Phantom first entered service in 1961 with the Navy. After proving to be highly adaptable, it was also flown by the Marine Corps and the United States Air Force. Everyone wanted to fly this jet capable of Mach 2.2 speeds.
During its four decades of active service in the United States' three air arms, the aircraft set 16 world performance records. It downed more adversaries than any other US fighter in the Vietnam War.
Eventually, the Phantom entered service with 15 other militaries across the world. Some of those F-4's still fly today.

Total Destruction Redux: F4 Phantom vs. Concrete Wall - Additional Camera Angles
For those of you who missed the first installment or are otherwise curious to know what's going on (beyond the obvious), the other video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4wDqSnBJ-k
This footage is of a test conducted on April 19, 1988, at a rocket sled facility at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in which an actual F-4 Phantom aircraft was impacted at a nominal velocity of 500 miles per hour into a rigid block of concrete. This was accomplished by supporting the F-4 on four struts that were attached to the sled track by carriage shoes to direct the path of the aircraft. Propulsion was accomplished by two stages of rockets. The concrete target was 'floated' on a set of air bearings. Results: An atomized plane. Cool.

The McDonnell two-place, twinjet, all-weather F-4 Phantom II, with top speeds more than twice that of sound, was one of the most versatile fighters ever built. It served in the first line of more Western air forces than any other jet. Just 31 months after its first flight, the F-4 was the U.S. Navy's fastest, highest flying and longest range fighter. It first flew May 27, 1958, and entered service in 1961.
The F-4 established 16 speed, altitude and time-to-climb records. In 1959, its prototype set the world altitude record at 98,556 feet (30,000 meters). In 1961, an F-4 set the world speed record at 1,604 mph (2581 kph...

Midway Magic: F-4 Phantom II - Naval Aviation
USS Midway (CVB/CVA/CV-41) was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class. Commissioned a week after the end of World War II, Midway was the largest ship in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal. A revolutionary hull design, based on the planned Montana-class battleship, gave her better maneuverability than previous carriers.[verification needed] She operated for an unprecedented 47 years, during which time she saw action in the Vietnam War and served as the Persian Gulf flagship in 1991's Operation Desert Storm. Decommissioned in 1992, she is now a museum ship at the USS Midway Museum, in San Diego, California, and the only remaining U.S. aircraft ca...

The F-4 established 16 speed, altitude and time-to-climb records. In 1959, its prototype set the world altitude record at 98,556 feet (30,000 meters). In 1961, an F-4 set the world speed record at 1,604 mph (2581 kph) on a 15-mile circuit. By the end of production in 1985, McDonnell had built 5,068 Phantom IIs, and Mitsubishi, in Japan, had built 127.
F-4s saw combat in both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm and served with the air forces of 11 countries in addition to the United States. Both U.S. military flight demonstration teams, the Navy Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds, flew the Phantom II from 1969 to 1973.
The 5,000th Phantom was delivered on May 24, 1978, in ceremonies that also marked the 20th anniversary of the fighter's first flight, and McDonnell Douglas delivered the last St. Louis–built Phantom II in October 1979. By 1998, approximately 800 were still in service around the world.
In 2014, modified Phantoms designated QF-4 were being used as remotely controlled aerial targets over the Gulf of Mexico to test pilots, aircraft such as drones and weapons at Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City, Fla. In September 2014, the first unmanned QF-16 Viper was successfully tested there as a proposed replacement for the aging QF-4s.

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II[N 1] is a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor aircraft/fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy by McDonnell Aircraft.[2] It first entered service in 1960 with the U.S. Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, and by the mid-1960s had become a major part of their respective air wings.[3]
The Phantom is a large fighter with a top speed of over Mach 2.2. It can carry more than 18,000 pounds (8,400 kg) of weapons on nine external hardpoints, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and various bombs. The F-4, like other interceptors of its time, was designed without an internal cannon. Later models incorporated an M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. Beginning in 1959, it set 15 world records for in-flight performance,[4] including an absolute speed record, and an absolute altitude record.

War Thunder is a highly detailed vehicle combat game containing over 2000 playable tanks, aircraft, and ships spanning over 100 years of development. Immerse yourself completely in dynamic battles with an unparalleled combination of realism and approachability.
On June 5, 1960, Charlie Plumb entered the U.S. Naval Academy. After graduating in 1964, Plumb was commissioned Ensign, completed Navy Flight Training, and reported to Miramar Naval Air Station. There, he flew the first adversarial flights in the development of The Navy Fighter Weapons School–also known as “Top Gun.”
Plumb deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, where he began flying the F-4 Phantom Jet. There, he flew 74 successful combat missions over North Vietnam and made over 100 carrier landings.
In May 1967, on his 75th mission, Plumb was shot down over Hanoi. He was taken prisoner and tortured. He spent 2,103 days – nearly 6 years – as a Prisoner of War. While a Prisoner of War, he served as a chaplain for two years.
On February 18, 1973, Plumb was released during Operation Homecoming. In 1974, he joined the Naval Reserves. There, he flew A-4 Sky Hawks, A-7 Corsairs, and F-18 Hornets.
He retired from the United States Navy with the rank of Captain. Plumb was awarded, among other things, the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and two Purple Hearts.
