Best Places in Extremadura
The west of Spain is one of the lesser-known destinations in central Spain. The region is ideal for individual tours off the beaten track. The hilly landscapes have a very special charm. Pigs, cattle and sheep graze on the green meadows in the shade of oak trees. Vultures circle under the blue sky. Storks build their nests on church towers and electricity pylons along the roads.
Large cities are the exception here, as Extremadura is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Europe. The Roman city of Mérida and the medieval city of Cáceres are interesting city destinations. No less attractive are the picturesque small towns such as Trujillo or Guadalupe, which tell a lot about Spain's history.

Massive 4-day Extremadura adventure! // During a heatwave!
This past August I headed to the depths of Extremadura to spend a few days eating and touring the region. Fun Fact, there was a heatwave while we were there so the days ranged from 39-41 degrees celsius. Nevertheless we based ourselves in Cáceres and then had trips to Trujillo and Alcántara.
There was lots of food and wine, Roman bridges, conquistadors, medieval streets and more wine.

Extremadura is one of the least visited and least populated regions in all of Spain. It’s a wonderful part of the country to visit, and it’s only a couple of hours' drive from Madrid.
And there is one part of the region that is especially famous - particularly for two weeks a year in spring. And that’s the Jerte Valley (Valle del Jerte in Spanish). It’s a magical little valley where for two weeks a year the region’s cherry blossoms come into bloom. And the entire valley is blanketed in gorgeous white cherry blossoms.
You can walk amongst them, even picnic beneath them. In fact, many of the cherry orchards that line the hillside leave their gates open so you can explore freely. So that’s what we did!
If you ever want to visit this region, here are the things I would recommend:
- The cherry blossoms flower around late March and early April. The dates change a little each yet, depending on the weather - so it’s a little hard to predict if you’re planning a trip (and places do book out). But if you check out this page (in Spanish) http://www.turismovalledeljerte.com/cerezo-en-flor They flower for approximately 2 weeks, so you’ve generally got 2 weekends in there during which you can visit. If you can visit during the week, there will be fewer people
- I suggest staying at Cabezuela del Valle. It’s a nice little town and has some good options for eating and drink. It’s also very central within the valley. Try the little riverside restaurant called El Vao. Also, for a big slap up Spanish meal, check out El Castillo (a brief drive from Cabezuela del Valle)
- Make sure you rent a car - you need a card to move around the area
- Take a picnic to have a picnic beneath the cherry trees! The spot where we picnicked was a brief walk out of a town called Valdastillas. Simply keep walking until you find a cherry orchard on the side of the road that looks nice and hard in - people don’t seem to mind people exploring their orchards.
- The waterfall we visited is called Cascada del Caozo - and it’s a brief drive up the hill from Valdastillas - and it’s worth it!
And that article about Spanish coffee: http://www.madridchow.com/the-curious-case-of-spanish-coffee-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-drinking-cafe-torrefacto/

In our video about Extremadura you will find the most beautiful destinations for a vacation in western Spain. #extremadura #spain #bestplaces

The places...
Cáceres:
Restaurante Centro (set menu)
La Chica de Belona (craft beer)
Trinidad
Zeri's Coffee
Taperia 8 Arte
Las Claras (craft beer)
La Minerva
Cafe-Bar Vivaldi
La Morocha (meat)
Trujillo:
Mesón la Cadena (set menu)
Alcántara:
Cafe-Bar Lisboa (breakfast)
