Blocking (stage)
In theatre, blocking is the precise staging of actors in order to facilitate the performance of a play, ballet, film or opera. The term derives from the practice of 19th-century theatre directors such as Sir W. S. Gilbert who worked out the staging of a scene on a miniature stage using blocks to represent each of the actors. (Gilbert's practice is depicted in Mike Leigh's 1999 film Topsy-Turvy.)
In contemporary theatre, the director usually determines blocking during rehearsal, telling actors where they should move for the proper dramatic effect, ensure sight lines for the audience and work with the lighting design of the scene.
Each scene in a play is usually "blocked" as a unit, after which the director will move on to the next scene. The positioning of actors on stage in one scene will usually affect the possibilities for subsequent positioning unless the stage is cleared between scenes. During the blocking rehearsal, the assistant director, stage manager or both take notes about where actors are positioned and their movements on stage. It is especially important for the stage manager to note the actors' positions, as a director is not usually present for each performance, and it becomes the stage manager's job to ensure that actors follow the assigned blocking from night to night.

Stage Left
Stage Left is Martin Barre's fourth studio CD, released in 2003. The title is a reference to his hallowed position on the Jethro Tull stage assignment. It was the first album of Martin Barre to be released both in U.K and in the United States. Stage Left was supported with a tour in small venues.
Musical Style
Featuring 13 instrumental tracks (and one with vocals, "Don't Say a Word"), Barre moves through a wide range of guitar-based styles including (but not limited to) classical and blues acoustics, progressive rock, acoustic folk, 80s-styled finger picking and even ambient electronic styles.
Martin stated that the album was conceived with most attention to the melodies, thinking always in the balance between acoustic and electric pieces. The album shows a great variety of guitars and other string instruments, as the bouzouki and the mandolin.
Critical Reception
AllMusic review, by William Ruhlmann, was positive. Giving three stars, the review goes to praise Martin taste for melodies instead of simple guitar solos, also stating Martin "highly textured approach, playing electric rock guitar much of the time as if he was playing English folk music on an acoustic."

Stage Left (film)
Stage Left: A Story of Theater in San Francisco (2011) is a documentary film about the history of theater in the San Francisco Bay Area from about 1952 until 2010. The film was directed by Austin Forbord, and features Robin Williams, Peter Coyote, Herbert Blau, Tony Taccone, Oskar Eustis, Bill Irwin, Joan Holden, R. G. Davis, Richard "Scrumbly" Koldewyn, and is narrated by Marga Gomez.
The film premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival in October 2011 and aired on KQED-TV on November 11, 2012.

Snagglepuss
Snagglepuss is a Hanna-Barbera cartoon character created in 1959, a pink anthropomorphic mountain lion sporting an upturned collar, shirt cuffs and a string tie with a great desire to be a stage actor. He is voiced by Daws Butler, and is best known for his catchphrase, "Heavens to Murgatroyd!", along with phrases such as "Exit, stage left!" and "Heavens to Betsy!". Snagglepuss was originally known as "Snaggletooth" (a pink lion precursor).
Summary
Snagglepuss first appeared in several episodes of The Quick Draw McGraw Show and became a regular segment on The Yogi Bear Show, starring in a total of 32 episodes. (See the list of episodes.) He also appeared in other Hanna-Barbera series such as Yogi's Gang in 1973, as a co-host for Laff-A-Lympics in 1977 and 1978, Yogi's Treasure Hunt in 1985 and as a teenager on Yo Yogi! in 1991.
Snagglepuss lives in a cavern, which he constantly tries to make more habitable for himself. No matter what he does, however, he always winds up back where he started or worse off than he was before. In some episodes, Snagglepuss is chased by Major Minor (voiced by Don Messick), a tiny-sized hunter, whose chases seem similar to the ones which involve Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny (which was hardly a coincidence, since most of the scripts were created by Michael Maltese, one of Warner Bros. Cartoons' key writers in the '40s and '50s).

Exit...Stage Left
Exit...Stage Left is a live album by Canadian band Rush, released in 1981. A video release of the same name, with slightly different content, was released in 1982 on VHS and later on Laserdisc, and in 2007 on DVD.
The album was voted 9th best live album of all time in a poll by Classic Rock Magazine in 2004.
Album editing and changes
The first, third, and fourth sides of the original vinyl issue were recorded in Canada during the Moving Pictures tour, while the second side was recorded in the UK during the Permanent Waves tour.
The original CD issue removed "A Passage to Bangkok," as CDs could only hold 75 minutes at the time. It was included on the 1997 remaster, as CD capacity had increased to 80 minutes by that time. Before the remastered version was released, the same live version of "A Passage to Bangkok" was released on the compilation Chronicles in 1990.

Exit...Stage Left (video)
Exit...Stage Left is a concert film released on videocassette, laserdisc, and DVD by the Canadian band Rush. It documents a live concert performance by the band on their 1981 Moving Pictures tour. In October 1981, the band released an audio album of the same name on vinyl LP, audiocassette, 8-track cartridge and (later) compact disc. The video comprises an entirely different recording from the album, with a different track list as well as voice-over comments from the band members about songwriting and performing.
Dates of release & formats
The videocassette and laserdisc versions were the original formats of release, both in 1982. The videocassette and laserdisc versions are currently out-of-print.
In 2006, a DVD version of the original production was released as part of the DVD box set, titled Rush Replay X 3 with its audio re-mastered in 5.1-channel Dolby Surround by Rush guitarist and co-producer Alex Lifeson. In 2007, the DVD version of Exit...Stage Left, as it was included in Replay X 3, was released as a single, stand-alone DVD.

As a performer, stage blocking should always be in your mind. Well thought out blocking can add dynamic and intention to your performance. If you don’t already know, stage blocking refers to the position on a stage a performer must stand on at a determined time. This video comes from Berklee Online’s Art of Performing and Engaging an Audience for Singers course, by Phil Lima and David Jiles, and demonstrates that to effectively communicate stage blocking, you first need to learn the different terms used to describe the locations on a stage. The vocabulary used for blocking reflects your perspective as the performer on stage facing the audience. To your left is stage left, to your right is stage right. Behind you, further away from the audience, is upstage. In front of you, closer to the audience, is down stage. The middle of the stage is center stage. Just like a compass with its four cardinal directions, the stage also has in-between zones such as Down Left and Up Right. When you can communicate these terms with your bandmates, you will be able to choreograph effective stage blocking that can increase the value of your performance. The best uses of blocking will help performers engage with their audiences more effectively.

Baritone Philip Lima has sung leading operatic roles in Germany and for regional American opera companies in repertoire ranging from traditional favorites by Handel, Mozart, Puccini, and Verdi, to important works of twentieth century masters such as Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten, and Viktor Ullmann, to the comic masterworks of Gilbert and Sullivan. He has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops and more than 70 orchestras, choral societies, and concert series across the US and in Korea and Ukraine in beloved choral masterpieces as well as concert works by Leonard Bernstein, Dave Brubeck, and Lee Hoiby. He is featured on the recording of pioneering African American composer Florence Price’s Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight that won the 2020 American Prize for the Performance of American Music. He serves as the assistant chair of Berklee College of Music’s Voice department.
ABOUT DAVID JILES:
David Jiles Jr is a Boston-based professional actor, singer, and teaching artist. He is an assistant professor at Berklee College of Music where he teaches voice, acting, and musical theatre. He also teaches theatre and voice at Emerson College. He is an illustrious performer with many theatre credits in Boston. David performs more than 60 gigs each year, and is passionate about exploring the connections performers create with an audience during live performance. He has nearly 20 years of professional acting and teaching experience. David serves on the board of StageSource; an arts service organization in Boston. He is a proud member of Actors Equity and Musical Theatre Educators Alliance. David is also an avid Yogi, and is a 300-hour-certified yoga instructor. David completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College, and his graduate studies at Emerson College. He is in progress to designate in the Linklater Voice Method; a training methodology on freeing the natural voice through psychosomatic voice exercises and physical exercises.

As a performer, stage blocking should always be in your mind. Well thought out blocking can add dynamic and intention to your performance. If you don’t already know, stage blocking refers to the position on a stage a performer must stand on at a determined time. This video comes from Berklee Online’s Art of Performing and Engaging an Audience for Singers course, by Phil Lima and David Jiles, and demonstrates that to effectively communicate stage blocking, you first need to learn the different terms used to describe the locations on a stage. The vocabulary used for blocking reflects your perspective as the performer on stage facing the audience. To your left is stage left, to your right is stage right. Behind you, further away from the audience, is upstage. In front of you, closer to the audience, is down stage. The middle of the stage is center stage. Just like a compass with its four cardinal directions, the stage also has in-between zones such as Down Left and Up Right. When you can communicate these terms with your bandmates, you will be able to choreograph effective stage blocking that can increase the value of your performance. The best uses of blocking will help performers engage with their audiences more effectively.

ABOUT PHIL LIMA:
Baritone Philip Lima has sung leading operatic roles in Germany and for regional American opera companies in repertoire ranging from traditional favorites by Handel, Mozart, Puccini, and Verdi, to important works of twentieth century masters such as Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten, and Viktor Ullmann, to the comic masterworks of Gilbert and Sullivan. He has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops and more than 70 orchestras, choral societies, and concert series across the US and in Korea and Ukraine in beloved choral masterpieces as well as concert works by Leonard Bernstein, Dave Brubeck, and Lee Hoiby. He is featured on the recording of pioneering African American composer Florence Price’s Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight that won the 2020 American Prize for the Performance of American Music. He serves as the assistant chair of Berklee College of Music’s Voice department.
ABOUT DAVID JILES:
David Jiles Jr is a Boston-based professional actor, singer, and teaching artist. He is an assistant professor at Berklee College of Music where he teaches voice, acting, and musical theatre. He also teaches theatre and voice at Emerson College. He is an illustrious performer with many theatre credits in Boston. David performs more than 60 gigs each year, and is passionate about exploring the connections performers create with an audience during live performance. He has nearly 20 years of professional acting and teaching experience. David serves on the board of StageSource; an arts service organization in Boston. He is a proud member of Actors Equity and Musical Theatre Educators Alliance. David is also an avid Yogi, and is a 300-hour-certified yoga instructor. David completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College, and his graduate studies at Emerson College. He is in progress to designate in the Linklater Voice Method; a training methodology on freeing the natural voice through psychosomatic voice exercises and physical exercises.

Blocking (stage)
In theatre, blocking is the precise staging of actors in order to facilitate the performance of a play, ballet, film or opera. The term derives from the practice of 19th-century theatre directors such as Sir W. S. Gilbert who worked out the staging of a scene on a miniature stage using blocks to represent each of the actors. (Gilbert's practice is depicted in Mike Leigh's 1999 film Topsy-Turvy.)
In contemporary theatre, the director usually determines blocking during rehearsal, telling actors where they should move for the proper dramatic effect, ensure sight lines for the audience and work with the lighting design of the scene.
Each scene in a play is usually "blocked" as a unit, after which the director will move on to the next scene. The positioning of actors on stage in one scene will usually affect the possibilities for subsequent positioning unless the stage is cleared between scenes. During the blocking rehearsal, the assistant director, stage manager or both take notes about where actors are positioned and their movements on stage. It is especially important for the stage manager to note the actors' positions, as a director is not usually present for each performance, and it becomes the stage manager's job to ensure that actors follow the assigned blocking from night to night.
