Mormon Exaltation & The Bible: Did Jesus Teach We Can Be gods?
Latter-day Saints believe that we are to "be perfect" as our "Father in Heaven is perfect." Now, while both Mormons and Christians agree that Jesus commanded "be ye perfect" in Matthew 5, we disagree about what EXACTLY Jesus was meaning.
Many members of the LDS Church teach that to "be perfect" is to be just like God—even with respect to our nature. Christians believe that there only ever HAS been and ever WILL be One Creator God who is uncreated and unchanging. In contrast, Mormons believe in exaltation—a process in which men can themselves becomes gods.
Because we are commanded to be PERFECT, many argue that Jesus is referencing exaltation in this text, and that perfection is indeed possible for mankind. In this video, Luke Wayne explains how Christian interpret this text, and WHY we'...

SALVATION and EXALTATION - What’s the difference? Ep. 4
In this episode, Dave talks about Article of faith #3 of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The article states, “We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.”
While this Article of Faith raises questions about salvation by grace or works, Dave first focuses on the difference between salvation and exaltation. He also explains the Latter-day Saint belief in a 3-tiered “Heaven” as opposed to the traditional one-Heaven, one-Hell doctrine that most Christians are accustomed to.

Did Jesus teach LDS Exaltation? ("You are gods" EXPLAINED in John 10)
Many Latter-day Saints interpret Jesus’ words in John 10, where he says "You are gods", as approval of the LDS teaching on Eternal Progression—that men can become gods. Yet Christians are quick to point out that the whole testimony of Scripture is that there only ever has been, and ever will be, one Creator God. So if Eternal Progression is false—as Christians claim—then why does Jesus quote the phrase, "You are gods" from Psalm 82 in John 10?

Because we are commanded to be PERFECT, many argue that Jesus is referencing exaltation in this text, and that perfection is indeed possible for mankind. In this video, Luke Wayne explains how Christian interpret this text, and WHY we're so confidence that Jesus wasn't speaking about the LDS doctrine of exaltation. Upon closer examination, the LDS interpretation of this passage in Matthew 5 simply isn't tenable, and when you take into consideration the parallel text in Luke, Jesus' meaning becomes quite clear.

Matthew 5:43-48:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, they became mortal, meaning they would die (physical death) and they were separated from God (spiritual death). These would have been permanent conditions if not for the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Physical Death
Christ was resurrected three days after His Crucifixion. Because of that, all people will also be resurrected, meaning their body and spirit will be reunited. Resurrection and immortality are gifts given to everyone, no matter what.
Spiritual Death
Spiritual death, or separation from God, requires more effort to overcome. For all people, it is possible but not guaranteed. Jesus Christ’s Atonement makes it possible, but to access the power of His Atonement, one must choose to repent of one’s sins, live the commandments, and follow Christ. Eternal life, also referred to as exaltation, offers the blessings of the highest degree of heaven.
God’s work and glory is to bring about immortality and eternal life for all His children. We can permanently overcome both physical and spiritual death to live with Him and His Son, Jesus Christ, again.
