Roswell Hopkins Rudd, Jr. (born November 17, 1935) is an American jazz trombonist and composer.
Although skilled in a variety of genres of jazz (including Dixieland, which he performed while in college) and other genres of music, he is known primarily for his work in free and avant-garde jazz. Since 1962 Rudd has worked extensively with saxophonist Archie Shepp.
Rudd later taught ethnomusicology at Bard College and the University of Maine. On and off for a period of three decades, Roswell Rudd assisted Alan Lomax with his world music song style (Cantometrics) and Global Jukebox projects, and the wealth of information on the music of this planet that he absorbed inspired him to collaborate beyond the periphery of jazz or even of western music.
In the album's liner notes, Rudd says that "the idea for this album, i.e. what players and compositions to use, came to me while in San Francisco with Archie Shepp's band in February of 1966." A preceding Impulse! release, Archie Shepp Live in San Francisco featured that group's February 19, 1966 performance at the Both/And Club.
Since the time of the album's initial release it has been re-issued once in the United States: on the 1998 compilation CDMixed, joined with October 1961 performances by the Cecil Taylor Unit (originally released as part of Gil Evans' album Into the Hot). The album had only previously been issued on CD (catalog # MVCI-23046) with its original title and artist name, in 1991 by MCA Victor, Japan.
Reception
The Allmusic review written in the 1990s by Scott Yanow awarded the album 2½ stars calling it "An intriguing but far from essential date". Interestingly however, Yanow qualifies the "far from essential" remark in his other review of Everywhere's four tracks on the 1998 compilation CD Mixed, where he states "Although not Roswell Rudd's greatest album, there are enough fascinating ensembles on this set for it to nearly hold its own with Cecil Taylor's more essential session".

Steve Lacy/Roswell Rudd - MONKSILAND BAND
"AFTER 50 YEARS, THELONIOUS' MUSIC HAS BECOME AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE JAZZ REPERTORY. AS SUCH, IT IS BY NOW, SUBJECT TO A MUCH FREER USE OF IT BY THE PLAYERS, SOMEWHAT AKIN TO THE TRADITIONAL OR CLASSIC SO CALLED 'DIXIELAND' SCHOOLS FROM NEW ORLEANS, CHICAGO, KANSAS CITY, NEW YORK, etc.
ROS AND I STARTED OUT PLAYING THAT WAY, AND MONKSILAND IS AN ORGANIC OUTGROWTH OF OUR OWN JAZZ HISTORY."

Here they perform Thelonious Monk's composition NUTTY.
"This performance of NUTTY has some usual Dixieland traits such as spontaneous horn riffing behind the soloist, and collective improvisation. For me, there's always been something Dixieland about Monk, colorful and high spirited composition and performance." Roswell Rudd 1/2/08

Steve Lacy & Roswell Rudd Quartet - School Days
During 1961-1964, soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and trombonist Roswell Rudd co-led an unusual quartet that exclusively played the music of Thelonious Monk. Amazingly enough, no record label was interested in recording the band (despite their high profile) and the eventual breakup led to the group being largely forgotten. In 1975, Emanem came out with this LP, which is comprised of a decently recorded, privately taped live performance from March 1963. Lacy and Rudd are joined by drummer Dennis Charles and (on five of the seven numbers) bassist Henry Grimes. Because Grimes showed up late that day, there are versions of "Bye-Ya" and "Pannonica" that were played without a bass but they still hold together. On such songs as "Brilliant Corners," "Monk's Dream," and "Skippy," the legendary group...
