Manic Street Preachers are a rock band formed in 1986 in Blackwood, Wales and consisting of James Dean Bradfield (lead vocals, lead guitar), Nicky Wire (bass guitar, lyrics) and Sean Moore (drums, percussion). They are often colloquially known as "The Manics." After the release of their first single, "Suicide Alley", Richey Edwards joined the band as co-lyricist and rhythm guitarist. The band proclaimed their debut album Generation Terrorists would be the "greatest rock album ever" and hoped to sell sixteen million copies around the world, "from Bangkok to Senegal", after which they would split up. Despite the album's failure to meet this level of success, the band carried on with their career.
The group later became a trio when Edwards disappeared on 1 February 1995. Bradfield, Moore and Wire went on to gain critical and commercial success. The band have released twelve albums and three compilations, Forever Delayed, Lipstick Traces (A Secret History of Manic Street Preachers) and National Treasures – The Complete Singles. Their early combination of androgynous glam imagery, critical social lyrics about "culture, alienation, boredom and despair" and a furious rock sound gained them a loyal following over the years and assured them a cult status. The band's later albums retained a leftist politicisation and intellectual lyrical style while adopting a broader alternative rock sound. To date, they have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide.
Everything Must Go is the fourth studio album by Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers. It was released on 20 May 1996, through Epic Records, and was the first record released by the band following the disappearance of lyricist and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards.
Released at the height of Britpop in the mid-1990s, the album was a commercial and critical success, it reached its peak in the UK on separate occasions, debuting and peaking at number 2 in the UK Albums Chart and earned the band accolades in the 1997 Brit Awards. It represented a shift in the group's sound due to Edwards' departure, the album charted in mainland Europe, Asia and Australia, eventually selling over two million copies. Everything Must Go is frequently featured and voted highly in lists for one of the best albums of all time by many music publications such as NME and Q.
The working title of the album was Sounds in the Grass, named after a series of paintings by Jackson Pollock. Everything Must Go takes its name from a play by Patrick Jones, Nicky Wire's brother.
Everything Must Go may refer to:
Everything Must Go is the ninth and most recent album by Steely Dan, originally released June 10, 2003. It was Steely Dan's second album following their 20-year studio hiatus, which spanned from 1980 through 2000. Everything Must Go was released three years after their Grammy-winning and certified double-platinum release Two Against Nature. It was a departure from their previous release in that the arrangements were scaled back, the solos were kept tighter, and the album had a more overall live feel. It is also the first time Walter Becker was featured on lead vocals on an official Steely Dan release ("Slang of Ages"). It also featured Becker and Fagen as instrumentalists much more than some of their previous releases, especially their late '70s work. Becker played bass on every song as well as contributing several of the guitar solos, and Fagen provided most of the keyboard work as well as the synthesizer solos. Received to mixed reviews and lackluster sales, it is the only Steely Dan studio album not to have been certified at least gold.
"Everything Must Go" is a song by Manic Street Preachers, released as a single on July 22, 1996, the second single released from Everything Must Go, released in May of the same year. The song reached number 5 in the UK Singles Chart.
The song is cited by Wire as a message to the fans, saying that the music had changed after the loss of Richey Edwards, but the band is still the same. Ushering in a new era for the band, Wire's lyrics asks fans to forgive them for changing: "and I just hope that you can forgive us, but everything must go".
James Dean Bradfield has said that Sean Moore had a lot of freedom in the drums for his song. Unlike on several previous Manic Street Preachers singles, the drums are not "compressed", they are more open and free, giving a sense of disorder in the song. The song features extensive violins and the album is the first Manics record to feature them.
It reached number 5 in the UK Singles Chart on August 3, 1996, making it their second straight top-ten hit. In Finland the song reached number 18 in the charts.
