"Everyday" is a single from glam rock band Slade that appeared on the album Old New Borrowed and Blue, and was written by the usual collaboration of lead singer Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea. The single was released in 1974 and peaked at number 3 in the UK, spending seven weeks on the chart, the shortest time of any charting Slade single at that time. The single's first week upon release peaked at number 6 and stayed in the top 10 for four weeks. Everyday marked a change from Slade's usual style. The public did not expect a ballad to be released and - with the exception of "Far Far Away" - Slade would not reach higher than number 3 in the UK again until 1983's "My Oh My".
The single was certified UK Silver by BPI in April 1974.
The single was awarded a Silver Disc only three days after its release.
The Record Mirror polls of early 1975 voted "Everyday" in the top ten singles poll.
Background
Upon its release, the band knew they were taking a risk, but "Everyday" had become a firm favourite on stage when the crowd would sing along - which they never expected.
Slade (originally known as The N'Betweens and now Slade II) are an English glam rock band from Wolverhampton/Walsall. They rose to prominence during the early 1970s with 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones. The British Hit Singles & Albums names them as the most successful British group of the 1970s based on sales of singles. They were the first act to achieve three singles enter at number one; all six of the band's chart-toppers were penned by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. Total UK sales stand at 6,520,171, and their best-selling single, "Merry Xmas Everybody", has sold in excess of one million copies.
Following an unsuccessful move to the United States in 1975, Slade's popularity waned but was unexpectedly revived in 1980 when they were last minute replacements for Ozzy Osbourne at the Reading Rock Festival. The band later acknowledged this to have been one of the highlights of their career. The original line up split in 1992 but the band reformed the following year as Slade II. The band has continued, with a number of line-up changes, to the present day. They have now shortened the group name back to Slade.
Slade is a surname of Saxon origin, meaning, variously at different times in different dialects, "a valley, dell, or dingle; an open space between banks or woods; a forest glade; a strip of greensward or of boggy land; the side or slope of a hill." Earliest known references in England as a surname are found in the south west, especially in Devon.
Song's main focus was on leisure traffic between the northeastern United States and Florida, a market where it competed with JetBlue Airways. It also operated flights between Florida and the West Coast, and from the Northeast to the west coast.
Song's aircraft were fitted with leather seats and free personal entertainment systems at every seat, with audio MP3 programmable selections, trivia games that could be played against other passengers, a flight tracker, and satellite television (provided by the DISH Network). Song offered free beverages, but charged for meals and liquor. Both brand-name snack boxes and healthy organic meals were offered. The flight safety instructions were sung or otherwise artistically interpreted, depending on the cabin crew. In addition to crew uniforms designed by Kate Spade, customized cocktails created by nightlife impresario Rande Gerber and an in-flight exercise program designed by New York City fitness guru David Barton, the airline created its own distinct mark in the industry. The Song brand was placed on more than 200 flights a day which carried over ten million passengers.
