In modern politics and history, a parliament is a legislative, elected body of government. Generally a modern parliament has three functions: representing the electorate, making laws, and overseeing the government (i.e., hearings, inquiries).
Historically, parliaments included various kinds of deliberative, consultative, and judicial assemblies (i.e. the mediaeval parlements).
Etymology
The term is derived from Anglo-Normanparlement, from the verb parler 'talk'. The meaning evolved over time: originally any discussion, conversation, or negotiation (attested around 1100), through various kinds of deliberative or judicial groups, often summoned by the monarch. By 1400, it had come to mean in Britain specifically the British supreme legislature.
Origins
Various parliaments are claimed to be the oldest in the world, under varying definitions:
The National Assembly, officially the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, is the 300-memberunicameral national legislature of South Korea. The latest legislative elections were held on 11 April 2012. Single-member constituencies comprise 246 of the assembly's seats, while the remaining 54 are allocated by proportional representation. Members serve four-year terms.
The unicameral assembly consists of at least 200 members according to the South Korean constitution. In 1990 the assembly had 299 seats, 224 of which were directly elected from single-member districts in the general elections of April 1988. Under applicable laws, the remaining seventy-five representatives were elected from party lists. By law, candidates for election to the assembly must be at least thirty years of age. As part of a political compromise in 1987, an earlier requirement that candidates have at least five years' continuous residency in the country was dropped to allow Kim Dae-Jung, who had spent several years in exile in Japan and the United States during the 1980s, to return to political life. The National Assembly's term is four years. In a change from the more authoritarian Fourth Republic and Fifth Republic (1972–80 and 1980–87, respectively), under the Sixth Republic, the assembly cannot be dissolved by the president.
The Parliament of the Republic of Singapore and the President jointly make up the legislature of Singapore. Parliament is unicameral and is made up of Members of Parliament (MPs) who are elected, as well as Non-constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs) and Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs) who are appointed. Following the 2011 general election, 87 MPs were elected, and three NCMPs appointed to the 12th Parliament. Nine NMPs were appointed during the first session of this Parliament. The first sitting of the 12th Parliament took place on 10 October 2011. It was subsequently dissolved on 25 August 2015, with a general election scheduled on 11 September 2015.

Thanks to her track record, her re-election by an absolute majority (50% of MEPs plus one) is a foregone conclusion.
The Left is reportedly interested in filing an alternative candidate, as they did last time in 2022. However, the alternative bid will be entirely symbolic.

A French Green MEP said the gesture was a violation of parliamentary rules. 'What are you going to do now to get this animal back?' asked Caroline Roose. 'Where is animal welfare in this speaker's gesture? I find this absolutely unacceptable.'

European Union Parliament LIVE: Roberta Metsola Re-elected European Parliament President
Lawmakers will determine the fate of EU leaders from Tuesday onwards as the European Parliament convenes for the first time since the elections in June. Tensions are high as the 720 lawmakers start their five-year term, with current European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's future in the balance. MEPs will kick off their work by electing their president for the next two years and a half. The frontrunner is a familiar face: Roberta Metsola, the Maltese politician who has led the institution since early 2022.
Hailing from the centre-right European People's Party (EPP), Metsola is a moderate figure who is well-liked across the political spectrum and is considered to have done a good job representing the Parliament's views. Thanks to her track record, her re-election by an absolute majority (50% of MEPs plus one) is a foregone conclusion.
The Left is reportedly interested in filing an alternative candidate, as they did last time in 2022. However, the alternative bid will be entirely symbolic.

Who is Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament who was elected for a second time in July 2024? How was she chosen and what is her role?
Every two and a half years, the European Parliament selects someone to represent it when dealing with other EU institutions and the wider world. Parliament’s President is elected in a secret ballot that takes place in the first plenary session after the elections.
The candidate who receives the absolute majority of the votes cast gets the post.
The President also directs Parliament’s activities, chairs plenary sessions and declares the EU budget finally adopted. The role also includes setting out Parliament’s point of view at the beginning of every European Council meeting.

Ursula von der Leyen still faces her toughest test yet: securing a majority vote in the European Parliament, which requires 361 votes. With 7 political groups in the parliament, each with its own agenda, achieving this might prove very difficult. This video will look at whether she can get a majority.

A member of the European parliament released a white dove in the parliamentary chamber on Wednesday, in what he claimed was a gesture of peace.

Miroslav Radačovský, an MEP from the Slovak Patriot party, made a short speech in what he said was his 'last intervention' in parliament. He wished Europe and the world peace, before releasing the bird from a bag around his waist. 'Let's let this dove unite all of us. Let this dove, a symbol of peace … let us realise that what we need most is really peace,' he said.
A French Green MEP said the gesture was a violation of parliamentary rules. 'What are you going to do now to get this animal back?' asked Caroline Roose. 'Where is animal welfare in this speaker's gesture? I find this absolutely unacceptable.'
