36세 이준석 국민의 힘 당대표 당선
Thirty-six year old, Lee Jun-seok, has been elected the new chairman of South Korea's main opposition People Power Party.
This is the first time a major party in South Korea has been led by someone in their thirties.
Lee has been the face of party's younger generation since 2011 despite never being a lawmaker.
His new role comes at a crucial time as the party looks to take back the presidency next year.
His victory also signals supporters' demand for a generational switch from old faces to fresher ones.
During his acceptance speech, the entrepreneur-turned-politician said his most important task is "co-existence," saying everyone will be included in his bid to improve Korean society.

MOH rejects 'egregious and false claims' by People's Power Party about COVID-19 vaccines
The Health Ministry has rejected what it calls "egregious and false claims" by the People's Power Party, which is seeking to halt COVID-19 vaccinations in Singapore. In a social media post signed off by its secretary general Goh Meng Seng, the PPP claimed that vaccines have caused high incidences of severe side effects. The post also tried to link high vaccination rates with excess deaths. Rebutting the claims, the Health Ministry said there's a need to draw the right conclusions and follow scientific evidence on the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines. It added that, while there are side effects to any vaccination, scientific evidence overwhelmingly shows that protection from vaccines outweighs the side effects.

A national convention will take place today here in South Korea to elect a new chairman for the ruling People Power Party.
That will put official leadership in place after eight months of the emergency committee taking control.
Our political correspondent Lee Shi-hoo reports.
The day of the ruling conservative People Power Party’s national convention has finally come.
The bloc, currently run by an emergency steering committee headed by Chung Jin-suk, is announcing its new leadership on Wednesday in the city of Goyang in Gyeonggi-do Province.
This is after four days of online and phone voting by party members which began on March 4th.
Whereas before the public was able to vote too, this time, the PPP revised the rule so that only the registered party members are eligible.
Of some 837-thousand eligible voters, over 55 percent, or some 461-thousand people have voted.
The voting rate of party members is the highest ever recorded in a PPP national convention.
Four candidates are running for the single position of party chair.
And eight are running for four available seats on the party's supreme council.
Four more candidates are competing for a seat available for a young member of the supreme council designated for those under 45.
The members of the supreme councils will be announced on Wednesday.
But if none of the party chair candidates win a majority, a runoff will be held between the top two candidates.
In that case, the winner will be announced Sunday following a televised debate and two more days of voting.
Wednesday's event is the third national convention in the PPP's history.
It comes in a bid to find new leadership after Lee Jun-seok, the former PPP chair, was suspended from party membership after sexual bribery allegations last July.
All eyes are now on how the new leadership, once it has been selected, will prepare for the general election scheduled to take place in April 2024.
The party currently holds 115 seats in parliament compared to the main opposition Democratic Party's 169 seats.
Meanwhile, the theme for Wednesday's convention according to the PPP is unity and celebration.
President Yoon Suk Yeol is expected to join the event.

Turnout is also what he really stressed last night... in his final campaign speech.
Take a listen.
"This marathon is nearing an end. I urge you to show your encouragement and overwhelming support so I can be first over the finish line."
The party remains optimistic.
It said voter turnout so far is NOT lower than in any previous election.
But it did stress on the need for a final surge... to secure a safe victory.
The party has been making final phone calls and sending text messages... urging people to vote.
It's been sending the same message through its YouTube channel... throughout the day.
That's all for now... but I will bring more updates in our later newscast.

국민의힘 상황실... 윤석열 "투표율 저조해... 투표하면 바뀐다"
Now to Lee Kyung-eun, who's standing by at the People Power Party headquarters.
Kyung-eun, obviously such a big day for the people there. How is the party spending Election Day, and how about the candidate himself, Yoon Suk-yeol?
Well, Devin, things are starting to get busier... as we are inching closer to 7 PM.
That's when party leaders will come here... to watch the results of the exit polls.
In the meantime, Yoon Suk-yeol has been at home.
And he is NOT expected to be here... until late at night... when we START to get a clearer picture of the outcome.
Two times today, Yoon posted on social media encouraging people to vote,... saying "vote for change."
In his most recent post, he said turnout so far is not as high as expected... and that each vote is desperately needed.

국민의힘, '압승' 지방선거 결과에 '만세'
June 1st elections saw a massive ruling party victory. Except for a few traditional partisan strongholds, President Yoon’s People Power Party snapped up most of the 17 mayoral and governor posts, including those of the country’s biggest cities and regions including Seoul, Busan, Incheon and Daegu. At the national assembly former presidential candidates Ahn Cheol-soo and Lee Jae-myung won constituencies in the outskirt regions of Seoul.
We break down the results and discuss the outcome with LEE Hee-eun, Prof. of Law at Handong International Law School and Mason RICHEY, Professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
1. To both: The local election was a major win for the ruling People Power Party. What do you think this indicates about public sentiment?
2. Prof Lee: What do you make of the results for the mayoral race? Also, will the council seats elected work in Oh’s favour?
3. Prof Richey: What was Oh’s appeal? Will this become a stepping stone to a presidential election?
4. Prof. Lee: In Gyeonggi-do Province, (On whichever candidate that wins) what was the winning candidate’s appeal? How do you see their career trajectory?
Prof Lee: How did Ahn Cheol-soo and Lee Jae-myung fare, and what comes next for them?
Prof Richey: The turnout rate for foreign residents has been on a decline. How can we boost their representation, and endorse more of their interest?
Professor Lee: The turnout for the local elections this year was noticeably lower than the last race in 2018. What explains this phenomenon?
LEE Hee-eun, Prof. of Law at Handong International Law School and Mason RICHEY, Professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Thank you for your time.

People Power Party HQ calm so far; Yoon at home waiting for exit polls

Now we go over to our Lee Kyung-eun standing by at the People Power Party headquarters.
Kyung-eun, what's going on there?
Well Mok-yeon, things are pretty calm here so far.
Party officials will start coming here at 7 PM... to watch the exit poll results together.
In the meantime, Yoon Suk-yeol will be staying at home throughout the day... and will likely not come here until tonight... when we start to get a clearer idea of the election outcome.
Earlier in the morning, Yoon took to social media to call for active voting... saying that it's a way to prove that citizens are the "owners" of the nation... and can achieve a "change of government".
Yoon made the same remarks during his final speech... last night.
"This marathon is nearing an end. I urge you to show your encouragement and overwhelming support so I can be first over the finish line."
So, far, the party seems to be pretty confident.
Party chairman Lee Jun-seok yesterday said he is expecting a gap in Yoon's favor of up to 10 percentage points.
The party is also aiming for some 30 percent of votes in the liberal strongholds in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do Province.
They believe that a lot will really depend on how many people actually come out to vote.
They will be closely watching the turnout in traditional conservative strongholds like Daegu which showed one of the lowest early voter turnouts.
That's all for now... but I will bring more updates in our later newscast.
