European Journal | Germany: The New Heart of Europe
Ever since Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union in January 2007,the geographic center of the European Union has been in Germany,in the village of Meerholz in Hessen. There's not much more to see than a small hill,a flag and a 'center' marker. Meerholz residents are enthusiastic EU fans and proud of their title, but now they're worried. If EU candidate Croatia is granted accession, the center will shift to Bavaria.

The Netherlands: Border Puzzle | European Journal
Baarle is a small town of 10,000 on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. While Baarle-Nassau is Dutch,Baarle-Hertog is part of the Belgian province of Antwerp. It makes life confusing, because there are Dutch enclaves on Belgian territory, and vice-versa.In some places, the border even runs right through the middle of houses. You can sleep there with your head in Belgium and your feet in the Netherlands. Mayors, police forces, fire brigades -- there's two of everything in Baarle. In spite of that, the two populations get along quite well. At least they all speak Dutch.

Europe learnt its lessons from the conflict in Georgia. The EU is determined to bring the eastern states closer. Ukraine,Belarus,Georgia,Moldova,Azerbaidjan and Armenia are to be brought closer to the European Union.Actual membership is still only a distant possibility, but those countries are to receive financial support for politcial and economic restructuring. European Journal profiles each of these countries.Last episode: Azerbaidjan - between Pipelines and Minaret. Azerbaidjan has significant oil and gas reserves, which make it important for the EU: The long Nabucco pipeline could supply Europe with gas via Turkey - thereby avoiding Russia. The wealth in resources however, does not actually reach Azerbaijanis. The Mountainous Karabakh conflict with neighboring Armenia weighs heavily on t...

Germany: The Emigrants | European Journal
West German pensioners are moving east; young eastern Germans are moving west. Two decades after unification, age is a more important difference than geographical origin is.Eastern Germany threatens to become disproportionately elderly. Towns like Gorlitz, which were renovated with the aid of funding from the West, are attracting mostly retired people, including from western German states. Their pensions go a lot further there. But the influx of older people cannot compensate for the flight of the young. Because few jobs are available in eastern Germany, many young skilled workers are moving westwards. And many western cities are being rejuvenated as easterners come to study, work, and start families.

Poland: Test Tube Babies | European Journal
Many Polish couples with fertility problems are fulfilling their wish for children by using artificial fertilization techniques. One Warsaw woman is expected her second child using this method.
The surprising thing is that, while the entire family had to collect money to pay for her first artificial insemination, her second test tube baby is being funded by the government. Laws have been relaxed in Poland, a Catholic country where some priests refuse to baptize babies conceived through in vitro fertilization. Still, the method has been used in that country since 1987, and now the state is even helping defray the costs of the expensive reproductive procedure.
