HOMER'S ILIAD Book 7 complete (Lattimore)
Book VII is the second attempt to replace mass slaughter with a duel. The first duel, between Paris and Menelaos, ended inconclusively when the Trojan was saved by a God, as happens here, too. Hector's grace and decency are endearing. Paris refuses to return Hellen. Poseidon and Zeus speak of the evanescence of human works, like people of the Dark Ages looking at Bronze Age ruins.

The Iliad of Homer - Book VII
The Iliad is an ancient Greek epic poem in dactylic hexameter, traditionally attributed to Homer. Usually considered to have been written down circa the 8th century BC, the Iliad is among the oldest extant works of Western literature, along with the Odyssey, another epic poem attributed to Homer.
Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Mycenaean Greek states (Achaeans), it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles.
Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concern...

Episode 80: Gods and Heroes of Ancient Greece — Hector and Ajax in Single Combat
Welcome to Gods and Heroes of Ancient Greece, where MyLinda Butterworth of Totally Stories interprets the written word for your listening pleasure. Today we continue with ‘The Tales of Troy’ with the story of 'Hector and Ajax in Single Combat.'
Apollo and Athene agree to urge Hector to challenge the Danai to single combat and then watch to see how they acquit themselves. Helenus hears the conversation of the gods and tells Hector about what he has heard and encourages Hector to call a truce and challenge the bravest of the Argives to single combat. Hector speaks to the Argives and puts for the challenge but no one steps up to accept. It takes Nestor censuring them for nine warriors to step forward. Each marks a lot that is tossed into Agamemnon's helmet. The mark of Ajax sprung forth and ...

Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Mycenaean Greek states (Achaeans), it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior
Achilles.
Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns, tend to appear near the beginning. The epic narrative takes up events prophesied for the future, such as Achilles's imminent death and the fall of Troy, although the narrative ends before these events take place. However, as these events are prefigured and alluded to more and more vividly, when it reaches an end, the poem has told a more or less complete tale of the Trojan War.
Book VII
Hector duels with Ajax, but nightfall interrupts the fight. Both sides retire.
The Achaeans agree to burn their dead, and build a wall to protect their ships and camp, while the Trojans quarrel about returning Helen.
Paris offers to return the treasure he took and give further wealth as compensation, but not Helen. The offer is refused.
A day's truce is agreed for burning the dead, during which the Achaeans also continue to build their wall and a trench.
