Eoin Ó Broin (born 1972) is a political theorist, writer and Sinn Féin councillor.
Ó Broin is from Cabinteely in Dún Laoghaire, and was educated in Blackrock College in Dublin. He holds a degree in Cultural Studies from the University of East London and an MA in Irish Politics from Queens University Belfast. Ó Broin was elected to Belfast City Council in 2001, stepping down in 2004. He was the National Organiser of Ógra Shinn Féin between 1995 and 1997. He was Sinn Féin's Director of European Affairs co-ordinating his party's team in the European Parliament in Brussels, from 2004 to 2007. He is a former member of Sinn Féin's governing body and a regular columnist with the republican newspaper An Phoblacht.
He is also a published writer. His first book, Matxinada - Basque Nationalism and Radical Basque Youth Movements was published in English in 2004 and in Spanish in 2005. His second book, Sinn Féin and the Politics of Left Republicanism was published by Pluto Press in 2009 and the launch was held in Pearse Street Public Library on 16 February 2009. Ó Broin is also the editor of Left Republican Review. As a freelance writer he has articles published in An Phoblacht, Magill, Village Magazine and The Irish Times.
The most common meaning of Byrne (variations: Byrnes, O'Byrne) is a surname derived from the Irish nameÓ Broin.
There are two Irish surnames which have Byrne as their English spelling; the most common comes from Ó Broin, which refers to the Leinster-based family of Bran as described below, while the less common family name is Ó Beirn or Ó Beirne in Irish. The latter is most commonly found in Mayo, Sligo and Donegal in the Northwest of Ireland.
History
In the Irish language, Ó Broin means "descendant of Bran". The name has been traced back to the ancient Celticchieftain, Bran mac Máelmórda, King of Leinster, deposed in 1018, (d. 1052), who belonged to the Uí Dúnlainge dynasty. He was descended from Cathair Mór, an earlier king of Leinster, who was, according to medieval Irish legend and historical tradition, ll Ireland around 200 AD. The clan's motto is the Latin phrase Certavi et vici, meaning "I have fought and conquered".
In pre-Norman times the O'Byrnes, then known as the Uí Fáeláin sept, inhabited the rich Kildare plains. With the progress of the Anglo-Norman conquest, they were compelled to migrate to the poorer lands and the mountainous country eastwards, later to be denominated as the county of Wicklow.

“We engaged very extensively with both the child and family centre and the local community, and we came up with an alternative proposal on the same piece of piece of land and an adjacent piece of land that would have actually seen 44 homes and the child and family centre.
"You would also have much greater community buy-in... and community buy-in from the existing residents is important."
An amendment with the Sinn Féin proposal was tabled, but it failed to pass amid opposition from other parties.
The council’s proposal - which had been reduced from 28 to 19 homes amid the concerns over the site - then passed unopposed.
