Thermodynamics: Crash Course Physics #23
Have you ever heard of a perpetual motion machine? More to the point, have you ever heard of why perpetual motion machines are impossible? One of the reasons is because of the first law of thermodynamics! In this episode of Crash Course Physics, Shini talks to us about thermodynamics and entropy. Also, we learn about isovolumetric, isobaric, isothermal, and adiabatic processes. It'll all make sense in a minute!

First Law of Thermodynamics, Basic Introduction - Internal Energy, Heat and Work - Chemistry
This chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the first law of thermodynamics. It shows the relationship between internal energy, heat, and work. It discusses the difference between the system and surroundings and distinguishes an open system from a closed system and an isolated system. In chemistry, work is positive whenever work is done on the system and work is negative whenever work is done by the system. During an exothermic process, heat flows out of the system and it flows into the system during an endothermic process.

The First Law of Thermodynamics: Internal Energy, Heat, and Work
In chemistry we talked about the first law of thermodynamics as being the law of conservation of energy, and that's one way of looking at it, but physicists like doing math more than chemists do, so let's talk about the first law in terms of an equation. You like equations by now, don't you? You should!

Thermodynamics:
The word "thermodynamics" was derived from the Greek words:
"Thermé" which means “Heat” and "Dynamics" means “force”.
So, "Thermodynamics" is essentially the study of forces due to heat or heat due to forces.
THERMODYNAMIC TERMS:
System:
A thermodynamic system (simply "system") is that part of the universe which is under thermodynamic study.
Surroundings
The space outside the thermodynamic system is known as the surroundings.
System Boundary:
Anything which is separating the system from the surroundings, is called the boundary.
Thermodynamics systems
can be described in three different ways:
Open,
Closed
And isolated.
THERMODYNAMICS Properties:
Thermodynamic properties are defined as characteristic features of a system, capable of specifying the system's state.
In general, thermodynamic properties can be divided into two general classes:
Intensive properties and
Extensive properties.
State Variable:
When the properties of a system define the state of that system
is called State Variables.
State function:
A State function is a thermodynamic property of a system, whose value depends
only on the present state of the system and is independent of the path by which
that state was reached.
Path function:
A Path function is a thermodynamic property of the system, whose value depends upon the path by which the system changes from its initial to final states.
