A group of Fayetteville citizens obtained a charter from the North Carolina legislature in December 1852 to construct a railroad from Fayetteville to the coal fields of Chatham County (now Chatham, Moore, and Lee counties). The state helped finance, build, and operate the new railroad. Problems with the construction contracts and obtaining rights of way delayed its construction, the first rails being laid in 1858. It was not completed until the first part of the American Civil War. Its first operations in commenced in 1861 to McIver's Depot, and the line was completed to Egypt in 1863.
Charles Beatty Mallett (1816-1872) served as the railroad's second president from 1855 to 1865, and fourth president from 1867 to 1868. He was the son of Charles Peter Mallett (1792-c1874). Mallett was a cotton manufacturer, acquiring a controlling interest in the Union Manufacturing Company during the time he served as the railroad's president. In 1862 Mallett, in partnership with James Browne of Charleston, South Carolina, took over management and operation of the Egypt Coal Mines. These mines had been owned by a Philadelphia-based company, and had been placed into receivership by the Confederate government at the start of the war. The facilities of the railroad were used to transport the coal to Fayetteville, where it was then moved down the Cape Fear River to its contracted final destination of Wilmington, North Carolina. In 1865 Gen. Sherman's army reached Fayetteville. During his campaign Sherman burned or destroyed several of the bridges used by the railroad, 12 miles of track, and several depots. Its rolling stock was saved, having been moved to the Egypt end of the line. By 1868, his other businesses and personal residence also destroyed by Sherman's campaign, Mallett was forced into bankruptcy.
Today, I heard on a Facebook group about the Elkhart And Western making a later afternoon run today. I figured we should go out and see what they are doing. We left around 4:00PM and caught up with them switching out Buzzi Unicem. After they were done picking up some cars, they ran around to the other end of the train to head back east to Elkhart. We caught them at a few different crossings on the way back towards Elkhart, ending with them dropping off the cars in the small yard and going to bed for the day. Enjoy!

Very Bad Track on the Elkhart & Western Railroad
I took a trip with a friend of mine to Adlake Supply Company in Elkhart, Indiana. Adlake Supply Company has been in business since 1857 and is a world leader in railroad supplies. They relocated to Elkhart, Indiana, in 1927, where they are located today. My friend needed to purchase railroad keys and locks for his own private use. While he was inside, I was able to take my camera and capture a Elkhart & Western local freight train, which happened to have two rebuilt early EMD's. The first unit, #1000, was (I believe) a former Illinois Central GP9 rebuild (a GP10). The second unit, #911, Is a GP9 locomotive with a chopped nose for better cab visibility. To my knowledge this is the only video on the net of this line in action. I'm not sure how often they run trains, but this was just a strea...

Elkhart And Western Caught At Their Two NEW Railroad Crossings! 6-2-21
As I was still hanging out at Elkhart with a couple of my friends, we all heard the Elkhart And Western moving up to the north. We eventually made the decision to all get in the car and head up to see if we could catch them. Elkhart And Western has recently installed two new railroad crossings at Ash and Bittersweet Roads, to replace the stop sign crossbucks. With the heavier traffic on these roads, the stop signs caused traffic backups, and were replaced with lights and a E-Bell at both crossings. I wanted to get them at these new crossings, so we attempted to do that. After catching up with them and after dropping off a boxcar at a supply building, the E&W headed west to Mishawaka over Ash Road. We caught them again about 15 minutes later heading over Bittersweet as well into their indus...

The Official BIG 2020 CHASE Of The Elkhart And Western Railroad! 5-18-20
Nice to see lots of views for the Elkhart And Western! So, the original plan was to head down to Goshen on the Chicago Line for a while to see what I could get. As we passed over the Ash Road crossing for Elkhart And Western, we could see his headlights in the distance. NS B19 dropped off almost 30 cars for him today, and I had a hunch E&W would be running. We made the decision that this was the perfect chance to do our big chase video for the year. We caught up to him at the County Road 3 crossing switching a siding, and then dropped off five grain cars at Equalizer Systems. He then took his three remaining grain cars all the way to Mishawaka, and we chased him there. Knowing that he was going to be there a while, we ran to get some food, then came back, and E&W was just finishing up the ...

Elkhart And Western Railroad Chase: 9-4-20
As I was sitting in the house, I heard the Elkhart And Western in the distance coming back east. The train was running into the later afternoon, so we were able to go out and see what it was doing. Since the train moves slow, we were able to catch up with it at the County Road 3 crossing by about 5 minutes. We chased it to a couple more crossings down the line, and it dropped off it's cars at the beginning of the line in Elkhart and went to bed for the night. Enjoy!

We saw several other trains, which may be viewed on my Channel at:

He ended up running all the way back to Elkhart as a light engine move, and we got him as many times as we could all the way back to the engine gate between Elkhart Avenue and Jackson Boulevard, where they shut off the engines and finished up for the day, which ended our almost two hour long chase. I have always wanted to do an Elkhart And Western video for YouTube, and this was it. It was also my first time getting 911 and 912 leading. This was an EPIC day, and I can't wait for this to happen again someday. Elkhart And Western has a couple shortline operations, and this particular one serves industries in Elkhart, Osceola, and Mishawaka, IN and connects to the Elkhart train yard owned by Norfolk Southern. Traffic was increased on this line in late 2019 as another industry in Mishawaka opened up. They will operate locals on this line on various weekdays, mainly in the afternoon, but this one started around mid-afternoon and ran into early evening. This line currently uses GP-9 locomotives 911 and 912. 912 arrived in early 2020 and replaced 1000, which was moved to Pennsylvania. 911 has remained on this line for as long as I can remember. This line runs only about a mile from my house. Enjoy!
