As of the census of 2010, there were 64,094 people, 24,229 households, and 17,120 families residing within the μSA. The racial makeup of the USA was 63.9% White, 31.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.5% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
Elizabeth City is a city in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, in the United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 18,683. Elizabeth City is the county seat and largest city of Pasquotank County. It is the cultural, economic and educational hub of the sixteen-county Historic Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina.
Marketed as the "Harbor of Hospitality", Elizabeth City has had a long history of shipping due to its location at a narrowed bend of the Pasquotank River. Founded in 1794, Elizabeth City prospered early on from the Dismal Swamp Canal as a mercantile city, before later shifting into a varied industrial and commercial focus. While Elizabeth City still retains its extensive waterfront property, it is linked to neighboring counties and cities by highways and bridges and serves as the site of the largest US Coast Guard base in the nation.
Elizabeth City (or Elizabeth Cittie as it was then called) was one of four incorporations established in the Virginia Colony in 1619 by the proprietor, the Virginia Company of London, acting in accordance with instructions issued by Sir George Yeardley, Governor.
The plantations and developments were divided into four political divisions, called "incorporations", "burroughs", or "cities". These were James City, Charles City, Henrico City, and Kiccowtan or Kecoughtan (later Elizabeth City). Each of the four "citties" (sic) extended across the James River, the main conduit of transportation of the era.
United States micropolitan statistical areas (µSA, where the initial Greek letter mu represents "micro-"), as defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), are urban areas in the United States centered on an urban cluster (urban area) with a population at least 10,000 but less than 50,000. The micropolitan area designation was created in 2003. Like the better-known Metropolitan Statistical Areas, a micropolitan area is a geographic entity used for statistical purposes based on counties and county equivalents. The OMB has identified 576 micropolitan areas in the United States.
The term "micropolitan" gained currency in the 1990s to describe growing population centers in the United States that are removed from larger cities, in some cases by 100 miles (160km) or more. Lower land and labor costs have led some micropolitan areas to develop many housing subdivisions and suburban cultures similar to those found in larger metropolitan areas.
Micropolitan cities do not have the economic or political importance of large cities, but are nevertheless significant centers of population and production, drawing workers and shoppers from a wide local area. Because the designation is based on the core urban cluster's population and not on that of the whole area, some micropolitan areas are actually larger than some metropolitan areas. For example, the Ottawa–Peru, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area had a 2010 census population of 154,908. That would put its total population ahead of roughly 100 individual locations classified as a Metropolitan Statistical Area in 2010. The largest of the areas, centered on Torrington, Connecticut, had a population in excess of 180,000 in 2000; Torrington's population in that year's census was only 35,202.

We continue our series about a recent trip we took to Elizabeth City, North Carolina. We were there for a premiere of a documentary about the wild horses of the Outer Banks that was being held at a local museum. But we made a weekend of the trip by staying at a lovely Bed & Breakfast and exploring the great outdoors in Elizabeth City. In this video, we show you the beautiful natural scenery of this harbor town along the Pasquotank River. Sometimes referred to as part of the Inner Banks (the waterfront towns in Eastern North Carolina just west of the popular tourist area known as the Outer Banks), Elizabeth City is a lovely waterfront community without the crowds of the nearby Outer Banks.

Henrico City (or Henrico Cittie as it was then called) was one of four incorporations established in the Virginia Colony in 1619 North America by the proprietor, the Virginia Company. The plantations and developments were divided into four "incorporations" or "citties", as they were called. These were Charles City, Elizabeth City, Henrico City, and James City. The latter included the seat of government for the colony at Jamestown. Each of the four citties extended across the James River, the main conduit of transportation of the era.
Henrico's most promising early development, Sir Thomas Dale's Henricus, was abandoned during the Indian Massacre of 1622, as were the Falling Creek Ironworks. However, the offshoot town of Henrico, as differentiated from the adjacent, defunct fort, would survive until 1786, its courthouse having been burned by Benedict Arnold in 1781, during the 1776 revolution. Both locations were recently rediscovered and are now located in Chesterfield County, which was formed from parts of Henrico before the American Revolutionary War.
In 1634, under Royal authority, a portion became Henrico Shire, later Henrico County, Virginia. The county seat was designated near John Rolfe and Pocahontas' former home Varina Farms and remained there until 1752, when a new courthouse was built in Richmond.
