Elizabeth Barton
Sister Elizabeth Barton (1506? – 20 April 1534), known as "The Nun of Kent", "The Holy Maid of London", "The Holy Maid of Kent" and later "The Mad Maid of Kent", was an English Catholic nun. She was executed as a result of her prophecies against the marriage of King Henry VIII of England to Anne Boleyn.
Life
Little is known of Elizabeth Barton's early life. She was born in 1506 in the parish of Aldington, about twelve miles from Canterbury, and appears to have come from a poor background. She was working as a servant when her visions began in 1525. At the age of 18, while working as a domestic servant in the household of Thomas Cobb, a farmer of Aldington, she suffered from a severe illness and claimed to have received divine revelations. These predicted future events, such as the death of a child living in her household, or more frequently took the form of pleas for people to remain in the Roman Catholic Church. She also urged people to pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to undertake pilgrimages. Thousands believed in her prophecies and both Archbishop William Warham and Bishop John Fisher attested to her pious life.

Barton's prophecies became a rallying point for those opposed to Henry’s break with the Roman Catholic Church and the establishment of the Church of England.
Barton’s warnings against the king were dangerous in a period when loyalty to the crown was paramount. Her public declarations put her in direct conflict with Henry VIII, who was determined to solidify his authority and the legitimacy of his marriage to Anne Boleyn.
Arrest and Trial:
By 1533, the political climate in England was tense, and Henry VIII's advisers were keenly aware of the potential threat posed by Barton’s prophecies. In July 1533, Barton was arrested and brought to London for interrogation. She was accused of treason for prophesying against the king and inciting rebellion.
Under pressure, Barton confessed that her visions were fabricated, likely coerced by the threat of execution. Her confession was used to discredit her and to demonstrate the dangers of opposing the king. Barton and her associates, including Dr. Edward Bocking and several other monks and priests, were tried for treason.
Execution:
On April 20, 1534, Elizabeth Barton and her co-accused were executed at Tyburn. Barton's execution was intended to serve as a stark warning to others who might challenge the authority of the king. Her death was a spectacle, with Barton being drawn to the scaffold on a hurdle, a degrading form of public humiliation.

The Tragic Execution of Elizabeth Barton, the Holy Maid of London
During the reign of King Henry VIII, there was a huge amount of executions that took place across England. The Tudor period itself was a rather bloody time for people to live within, but inside of Henry’s kingdom it was very dangerous to disagree or dissent against the monarchy. Henry VIII executed around 72,000 people inside of his kingdom during his 4 decade long reign on the throne, and many of these were criminals but also others were those who disagreed with the King. Henry divided the nation in particular a number of times, especially with his reforms to religion and his splitting from the Catholic Church. When Henry was declared the Head of the Church of England, he was met with a large amount of opposition, which even resulted in the deaths of some of his closest advisors. However dissenting and disagreeing with the King would get someone in a lot of trouble, and you could definitely pay with your life. Today we look at Elizabeth Barton, who is known as the Nun of Kent, or the Holy Maid of London. She famously had a number of prophecies against the King, and in particular in response to his marriage to his second wife Anne Boleyn. These visions ultimately cost Elizabeth her life, and resulted in a shocking execution.

The Tudor Period was an incredibly dangerous time due to religious conflicts and intolerance, especially following Henry VIII's break from Rome. This began a time of great instability in England, and monarchs after the notorious King would struggle with changes to religion. However life in Tudor England was even more dangerous if you decided to speak out against the King.
That is exactly what Elizabeth Barton did. She was a Nun known as the 'Nun of Kent' who predicted the downfall and the death of Henry VIII if he married his second wife Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth was known for her religious visions and predictions, and she warned the King personally that he would die within a month if he re-married, and that England would be hit with a great plague as God was unhappy with the monarchy.
These predictions landed Elizabeth in a huge amount of trouble, and she became a celebrity touring the country delivering religious readings, predictions and her visions. That was until the King sent her to the Tower of London for her actions, and here she confessed possibly under torture that she was lying. Her execution for her crimes of treason was incredibly bloody, and she remains the only woman to have been unfortunate to have had her head stuck on a spike on London Bridge.

Henry VIII's reign as the King of England was an incredibly brutal and dangerous one as 70,000 people were executed in his realm for different crimes. But one of the most shocking executions saw Elizabeth Barton being executed at Tyburn. She was a woman who suffered from a condition such as epilepsy, and during seizures she would have visions and she also made predictions. Elizabeth Barton became a celebrity, as Thomas Cranmer and Cardinal Wolsey had an audience with her. But she made a big mistake, as she predicted the death of the King, Henry VIII.
During meetings with the King, she said that if Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn then he would be dead within a month. She also said that if the King did this then a plague would hit England and cause chaos. But because of the prediction, she was sentenced to death and was accused of treason. However she suffered a terrible execution, as she was also to face the axe and her head was placed on London Bridge. She was the only woman to have her head placed on a spike in London in History, showing the brutality of Henry VIII's kingdom.

Elizabeth Barton was born around 1506 in the village of Aldington, Kent. Little is known about her early life, but she began working as a servant in the household of Thomas Cobb, a farmer. Around 1525, Barton began experiencing what were believed to be divine visions. She reportedly fell into trances and claimed to receive messages from the Virgin Mary and other saints. Her visions often contained prophecies and moral exhortations, which quickly garnered attention.
Her reputation as a visionary and prophetess grew, and she was soon brought to the attention of Dr. Edward Bocking, a monk from Canterbury. Bocking saw potential in Barton’s visions to inspire piety and perhaps even influence political matters. She was subsequently moved to St. Sepulchre’s Nunnery in Canterbury, where her visions continued. Barton's fame spread, and she began to attract a significant following, including members of the clergy and nobility.
Political Involvement and Opposition to Henry VIII:
Barton's influence reached its zenith when she began to prophesy against King Henry VIII's marriage to Anne Boleyn. She claimed that the king’s decision to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn would bring disaster to the realm. Barton's prophecies became a rallying point for those opposed to Henry’s break with the Roman Catholic Church and the establishment of the Church of England.
Barton’s warnings against the king were dangerous in a period when loyalty to the crown was paramount. Her public declarations put her in direct conflict with Henry VIII, who was determined to solidify his authority and the legitimacy of his marriage to Anne Boleyn.
Arrest and Trial:
By 1533, the political climate in England was tense, and Henry VIII's advisers were keenly aware of the potential threat posed by Barton’s prophecies. In July 1533, Barton was arrested and brought to London for interrogation. She was accused of treason for prophesying against the king and inciting rebellion.
Under pressure, Barton confessed that her visions were fabricated, likely coerced by the threat of execution. Her confession was used to discredit her and to demonstrate the dangers of opposing the king. Barton and her associates, including Dr. Edward Bocking and several other monks and priests, were tried for treason.
Execution:
On April 20, 1534, Elizabeth Barton and her co-accused were executed at Tyburn. Barton's execution was intended to serve as a stark warning to others who might challenge the authority of the king. Her death was a spectacle, with Barton being drawn to the scaffold on a hurdle, a degrading form of public humiliation.

The Tragic Execution of Elizabeth Barton, the Holy Maid of London
During the reign of King Henry VIII, there was a huge amount of executions that took place across England. The Tudor period itself was a rather bloody time for people to live within, but inside of Henry’s kingdom it was very dangerous to disagree or dissent against the monarchy. Henry VIII executed around 72,000 people inside of his kingdom during his 4 decade long reign on the throne, and many of these were criminals but also others were those who disagreed with the King. Henry divided the nation in particular a number of times, especially with his reforms to religion and his splitting from the Catholic Church. When Henry was declared the Head of the Church of England, he was met with a large amount of opposition, which even resulted in the deaths of some of his closest advisors. However dissenting and disagreeing with the King would get someone in a lot of trouble, and you could definitely pay with your life. Today we look at Elizabeth Barton, who is known as the Nun of Kent, or the Holy Maid of London. She famously had a number of prophecies against the King, and in particular in response to his marriage to his second wife Anne Boleyn. These visions ultimately cost Elizabeth her life, and resulted in a shocking execution.

The Tudor Period was an incredibly dangerous time due to religious conflicts and intolerance, especially following Henry VIII's break from Rome. This began a time of great instability in England, and monarchs after the notorious King would struggle with changes to religion. However life in Tudor England was even more dangerous if you decided to speak out against the King.
That is exactly what Elizabeth Barton did. She was a Nun known as the 'Nun of Kent' who predicted the downfall and the death of Henry VIII if he married his second wife Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth was known for her religious visions and predictions, and she warned the King personally that he would die within a month if he re-married, and that England would be hit with a great plague as God was unhappy with the monarchy.
These predictions landed Elizabeth in a huge amount of trouble, and she became a celebrity touring the country delivering religious readings, predictions and her visions. That was until the King sent her to the Tower of London for her actions, and here she confessed possibly under torture that she was lying. Her execution for her crimes of treason was incredibly bloody, and she remains the only woman to have been unfortunate to have had her head stuck on a spike on London Bridge.

Elizabeth Barton
Sister Elizabeth Barton (1506? – 20 April 1534), known as "The Nun of Kent", "The Holy Maid of London", "The Holy Maid of Kent" and later "The Mad Maid of Kent", was an English Catholic nun. She was executed as a result of her prophecies against the marriage of King Henry VIII of England to Anne Boleyn.
Life
Little is known of Elizabeth Barton's early life. She was born in 1506 in the parish of Aldington, about twelve miles from Canterbury, and appears to have come from a poor background. She was working as a servant when her visions began in 1525. At the age of 18, while working as a domestic servant in the household of Thomas Cobb, a farmer of Aldington, she suffered from a severe illness and claimed to have received divine revelations. These predicted future events, such as the death of a child living in her household, or more frequently took the form of pleas for people to remain in the Roman Catholic Church. She also urged people to pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to undertake pilgrimages. Thousands believed in her prophecies and both Archbishop William Warham and Bishop John Fisher attested to her pious life.
