An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is a filtration device that removes fine particles, like dust and smoke, from a flowing gas using the force of an induced electrostatic charge minimally impeding the flow of gases through the unit.
In contrast to wet scrubbers which apply energy directly to the flowing fluid medium, an ESP applies energy only to the particulate matter being collected and therefore is very efficient in its consumption of energy (in the form of electricity).
Invention of the electrostatic precipitator
The first use of corona discharge to remove particles from an aerosol was by Hohlfeld in 1824. However, it was not commercialized until almost a century later.
In 1907 Frederick Gardner Cottrell, a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, applied for a patent on a device for charging particles and then collecting them through electrostatic attraction—the first electrostatic precipitator. Cottrell first applied the device to the collection of sulphuric acid mist and lead oxide fumes emitted from various acid-making and smelting activities. Wine-producing vineyards in northern California were being adversely affected by the lead emissions.

What Is An Electrostatic Precipitator And How Does It Work?
Electrostatic precipitator, a device that uses an electric charge to remove certain impurities either solid particles and/or liquid droplets from air or other gases in smokestacks and other flues. The precipitator functions by applying energy to the particulate matter being collected, without significantly impeding the flow of gases. Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are used for air pollution control, particularly for removing harmful particulate matter from waste gases at industrial facilities and power-generating stations as well as for recovery of valuable industrial-process materials. The ESPs comes in two variants, Dry ESP and Wet ESP.

Many industrial processes, like kilns and boilers, discharge spent gases to the atmosphere. These gases, called "flue gases," are often treated to remove pollutants in order to meet environmental regulations. Sometimes, enough particulate is recovered that it is worth returning to the process. An electrostatic precipitator, or ESP, is one method for removing particulate matter from flue gas. This module will describe the major components as well as the purpose and operating principles of an electrostatic precipitator.

Here is the simple and complete animation of ESP fields or electrostatic Precipitator .
Have you ever wonder why dust will stick to the ESP fields with out any filter or something. The ESP works on the electrostatic field theory, which will create positive magnetic field. When dust was suck though the area where positive charge was created. The dust particles will gets positive charge. Later when passes through the negatively charged plates. then they will gets attracts and stick to the negative plates. later rapping motors are used to clear the dust from that area. By using hammering. The video gives a better idea if you have any further dought, please comment on the video, i will try to clarify it.

AASOKA presents a video in which students can learn about electrostatic precipitators. An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is a filtration device that removes fine particles, like dust and smoke, from a flowing gas using the force of an induced electrostatic charge minimally impeding the flow of gases through the unit. The carbon and other waste products produced by industries in the atmosphere are removed by an electrostatic precipitator.
AASOKA provides 2D/3D educational videos based on the CBSE curriculum that will help you understand difficult concepts and complicated experiments in a simple, easy-to-understand way.

An electrostatic precipitator, or ESP, is a type of pollution control device that removes particles from exhaust gases by using electric fields (electrostatic force). In this video, we look at how an ESP works, its main parts, and learn about the benefits it provides.
The knowledge you gain in this video will be relevant for many engineering industries, but it is particularly useful for engineers working within the power engineering industry.

This electrostatic precipitator, or smoke precipitator, gets rid of most smoke by using high voltage to collect smoke particles. This shows how the electrostatic precipitator works and how to make your own electrostatic precipitator.
