Gasoline, Hybrid, Plug-In, and Electric. There are a lot of options available when buying a new car, but what’s the difference? Gas and diesel vehicles rely solely on a combustion engine to move the vehicle. Hybrids add a small battery and at least one electric motor to the mix. Plug-ins have larger batteries than standard hybrids, meaning you can start the car and drive for short distances on electric power only - great for daily commutes. For further distances, or when extra power is needed, the gas engine kicks on, giving you plenty of range. Fully electric cars ditch the engine completely, just using a large battery and electric motors, for the most efficient form of automotive transportation.

EV, Plug-In, or Hybrid: Which Should You Buy in 2025?!
We are car shopping and are considering Electric Vehicles, Plug-In Hybrids, and straight up Hybrids. I wanted to know the smartest choice to make financially over the course of, say, 10+ years... and as it turns out, there's more to consider then the initial fuel savings (which are significant!).
Each of the car technologies has pros and cons over each other The hybrids (like Toyota has really invested in) has proven to be incredibly reliable and hold their value very well... but the newer flashier EV's (Tesla) offer incredibly fuel savings over those Hybrids, but completely fall off the map when it comes to resale. Does that higher sticker price and terrible resale make it worth it in the long run?
And what about the Plug-In's? Are they the sweet spot offering a bit of both technologies...

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): These vehicles are powered entirely by electricity and are more efficient than hybrid and plug-in hybrids. BEVs are also known as All-Electric Vehicles (AEV). Instead of gasoline, these vehicles run solely on battery power. The electricity used to drive the car is stored in a large battery pack which can be charged by plugging it into the electricity grid.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): Hybrid Electric vehicles use an internal combustion (usually gasoline) engine and a battery-powered motor powertrain. The gasoline engine drives the car and charges the battery when empty. These vehicles are not as efficient as fully electric or plug-in hybrid cars. A hybrid electric vehicle cannot be plugged in to charge the battery. Instead, the battery is charged by regenerative braking and internal combustion engines, and unlike most electric cars, hybrid electric vehicles charge their batteries through regenerative braking.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV): Uses an internal combustion engine and a battery charged from an external socket (they have a plug). This means the vehicle’s battery can be charged with electricity rather than the engine. PHEVs are more efficient than HEVs but less efficient than BEVs.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV): Electric energy is produced from chemical energy. For example, a hydrogen FCEV. FCEVs are also known as Zero-Emission Vehicles. They employ fuel cell technology to generate the electricity required to run the car. The chemical energy of the fuel is converted directly into electric energy.

distribution between the axles, one engine is connected to the front axle and the
other to the rear axle of the car.
Regarding the function of the electric motor and the internal combustion engine,
hybrids are divided into three types.
In mild hybrids, the electric motor has a complementary function. He can assist the
start - up, acceleration and operation of systems in the vehicle when stationary while
the petrol or diesel engine is not running. These hybrids use a relatively small
capacity battery, which works at low voltage.
In full hybrids, in addition to the main functions of the electric motor, it can selfpropel
the car under certain conditions, and the battery provides a certain mileage.
Electric motors in this type of hybrid are more powerful, and the batteries have a
higher voltage and higher capacity.
Although less common, electric cars with range extender can also be considered as
hybrids. They have a small gasoline engine that serves only to charge the battery if it
is not possible to do so via the electrical grid.
There are several options for charging the electric battery in the hybrid car.
Kinetic energy can be converted into electrical energy by the electric motor, which
also plays the role of a generator charging the battery. This occurs at the so-called
regenerative braking, where the car first brakes with the electric motor and ultimately
with the car's braking systems. Electricity is also produced during the inertial motion
of the car.
Plug-in hybrids can also be charged via an external source of electricity using the

We are car shopping and are considering Electric Vehicles, Plug-In Hybrids, and straight up Hybrids. I wanted to know the smartest choice to make financially over the course of, say, 10+ years... and as it turns out, there's more to consider then the initial fuel savings (which are significant!).
Each of the car technologies has pros and cons over each other The hybrids (like Toyota has really invested in) has proven to be incredibly reliable and hold their value very well... but the newer flashier EV's (Tesla) offer incredibly fuel savings over those Hybrids, but completely fall off the map when it comes to resale. Does that higher sticker price and terrible resale make it worth it in the long run?
And what about the Plug-In's? Are they the sweet spot offering a bit of both technologies OR do they represent the worst of both worlds.
In this video I'm going to share what I've learned to help you figure out what the smartest choice is for you or your family so that if you DO decide to purchase a new vehicle this year, you are truly happy with your choice.
