Farrer electorate profile: in rural NSW, voters' anger over water is at boiling point
Gabrielle Chan visits the electorate of Farrer, which stretches from Wentworth in the west of the state to Albury in the east and covers around 126,000 square kilometres. The sitting member, Sussan Ley, is on a 20% margin but is facing a strong challenge from Kevin Mack, the Albury mayor. The issue setting Farrer alight is water. Deniliquin businessman Harold Clapham says the Murray-Darling basin plan has had a disastrous effect on the community. Farmer Brett Napier says he has no confidence in politicians. ‘There’s a lot of anger, frustration, depression, it is just rife at the moment. Everything is on a downward spiral and nothing’s being done about it politically... Both major parties have just shown total neglect to our region.’

Steve says he covered municipal politics in his previous job so was comfortable as a first-time Councillor. He also likes to research topics to prepare for meetings. COVID was unexpected, but Steve was able to work from home and loved the challenge of working and holding Council meetings via Zoom. He feels the City stepped up to help people in the community and to make it easy for businesses and City staff to operate.
Steve credits Mayor West with bringing alcohol into public parks despite concerns from School District 43. This was a ‘super-successful’ program making it easy for people to gather in parks, drink and then go their separate ways. Steve says it was something that needed to happen.
Steve says he’s had a career where he was able to do many cool things. He says being a City Councillor is a big change from being a journalist and he had to be reminded to go to the front of the room during events.
Money-grubbing landlords who steal stuff and kick people out were stopped in Port Coquitlam by a quickly-implemented renoviction bylaw. Steve says housing affordability is largely out of Council’s control, but the City can provide the right type of housing. The City has approved 500 homes and has a bylaw allowing developers to develop family-friendly units, carriage homes, and townhouses.
Steve says community adapts and changes. Some long-time families leave, and new families arrive. Steve waves to people he doesn’t know because they are part of the community. Public safety including speeding remains a concern on many streets. He feels Prairie Ave has been improved, and the roundabouts have slowed people down. Steve says new developments should include childcare.
If elected, Steve will bring more sports events to Port Coquitlam. He says more things are coming with respect to downtown and sports development.

The Darling Scarp ( Lesmurdie Falls & The Zig Zag )
The Darling Scarp, also referred to as the Darling Range or Darling Ranges, is a low escarpment running north-south to the east of the Swan Coastal Plain and Perth, Western Australia. The escarpment extends generally north of Bindoon, to the south of Pemberton.
Maps from the 1830s show the scarp labelled "General Darlings Range"; this later became Darling Range, a name by which the formation was still commonly known in the late 20th century, despite common understanding of it being an escarpment. There is also a tendency to identify the locations on or to the east of the scarp as being in the "Perth Hills" (or simply "The Hills").
The earliest traverses by British settlers in the Swan River Colony occurred in the 1830s. The best known of these is the expedition of Ensign Robert Dale, who...

On the edge of the Darling Scarp is the biggest waterfall in the Perth Hills and home to some spectacular views and cool walk trails. With plenty to explore both at the top of the falls and down at the base, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
What Is It:
Cascading over the granite edge of the Darling Scarp, Lesmurdie Falls is the spectacular point where Lesmurdie Brook plummets 40m down into the lush valley. A series of metal platforms near the falls allows you to get close to the action and provide some amazing views over the Swan Coastal Plain towards the skyscrapers of the Perth CBD.
Where Is It:
There are two access points to Lesmurdie Falls, depending on what you want to experience. To get the stunning views and to see the falls plunging down into the valley then the upper ca...

I applaud the Avon & Hills community for continuing the fight for this incredibly important region and for taking a stand for what’s right.

The earliest traverses by British settlers in the Swan River Colony occurred in the 1830s. The best known of these is the expedition of Ensign Robert Dale, who appears to have gone from a point near Guildford, to the south side of Greenmount Hill and up through the Helena Valley.
The Darling Scarp originated as the local expression, in the Perth area, of the extensive Darling Fault, a major and ancient geological discontinuity separating the Archaean Yilgarn Craton in the east from the younger Pinjarra Orogen and overlying Phanerozoic Perth Basin to the west. The Darling Fault is exposed for over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi), from the area east of Shark Bay, to the southern coast of Western Australia east of Albany. The location of the scarp must once have coincided with the location of the fault, but the scarp has since eroded about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) eastwards.

There is also a tendency to identify the locations on or to the east of the scarp as being in the "Perth Hills" (or simply "The Hills").
The earliest traverses by British settlers in the Swan River Colony occurred in the 1830s.

To get the stunning views and to see the falls plunging down into the valley then the upper car park is located on Falls Road in Lesmurdie. There is plenty of parking and it’s well signed.
If you want to check out the base of the falls and don’t want to climb up and down the steep path then you can park at the gravel car park located on Palm Terrace. From there follow the path all the way up the brook to the base where you can admire the rushing water from up close.
What To Do:
Lesmurdie Falls is one of the best places to catch the sunset in the Perth Hills with a number of great vantage points to take it all in. Watching the skies put on an epic light show from the elevated position is a pretty amazing experience, especially when you get the “god rays” illuminating the CBD.
If you’re keen to do a bit more exploring then there are a range of walking options from small 600m return walk to the full 2.5km loop trail that takes you from the top of the falls to the base and back. Steep in sections, you are rewarded by getting some different views of the area and it means you can get away from the crowds. In spring be sure to look out for the abundance of wildflowers and orchids that call this area home.
What Not To Do:
This is a high risk area if you venture off the main paths with big drops and unstable cliffs all around. Don’t be that person on the news being helicoptered out because you thought you’d get that cool Instagram shot, it’s not worth it and it wastes the resources of emergency services.
