El Greco
Doménikos Theotokópoulos (Greek: Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος [ðoˈminikos θeotoˈkopulos], 1541 – 7 April 1614), most widely known as El Greco (pronounced: [el ˈgɾeko]; Spanish for "The Greek"), was a painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. The nickname "El Greco" refers both to his Greek origin and Spanish citizenship. The artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters, Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος (Doménikos Theotokópoulos), often adding the word Κρής (Krēs, "Cretan").
El Greco was born in Crete, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done. In 1570 he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. In Toledo, El Greco received several major commissions and produced his best-known paintings.

El Greco (album)
El Greco is a 1998 classical album by Greek electronic composer and artist Vangelis (born March 29, 1943). The title is a reference to the man who inspired the composition, Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος (Dominikos Theotokópoulos, 1541–1614), the Cretan-born painter and sculptor better known as El Greco. It consists of ten long movements performed on electronic instruments.
Overview
This album is an expansion of an earlier album by Vangelis, Foros Timis Ston Greco. That album had been released in 1995, in a limited edition. For this general release, the track order was rearranged, three new tracks were added, and the album title was changed.
Vangelis composed and arranged the album, and performed all the instruments, accompanied by a choir conducted by Ivan Cassar. The music is in a Byzantine style yet sounding contemporary due to his use of synthesizers. Soprano Montserrat Caballé and tenor Konstantinos Paliatsaras make guest appearances on one movement each.

Berthold Type Foundry
H. Berthold AG was one of the largest and most successful type foundries in the world for most of the modern typographic era, making the transition from foundry type to cold type successfully and only coming to dissolution in the digital type era.
History
Established in 1858 by Hermann Berthold and based in Berlin, the company played a key role in the introduction of major new typefaces and was a successful player in the development of typesetting machines. The production premises were on Wilhelmstrasse No. 1 until 1868, and then on Mehringdamm 43. In 1979 the factory moved to another location between Teltow Canal and Wiesenweg in Lichterfelde.
The H. Berthold foundry's most celebrated family of typefaces is arguably Akzidenz-Grotesk (released 1896), an early sans-serif which prefigured by half a century the release of enormously popular neo-grotesque faces such as Helvetica. In 1950, type designer Günter Gerhard Lange embarked upon a long affiliation with the company, for which he designed various original typefaces, including Concorde and Imago, and oversaw the foundry's revivals of classic faces such as Garamond, Caslon, Baskerville, and Bodoni.

El Greco is a Greek biographical film about the life of the Greek painter of the Spanish Renaissance, Domenicos Theotokopoulos, known worldwide as El Greco. Based on the fictionalized biographical novel, El Greco: o Zografos tou Theou (El Greco: the Painter of God), by Dimitris Siatopoulos, it was released in 2007, directed by Yannis Smaragdis and written by Jackie Pavlenko. The main cast features prominent contemporary Greek actors like Lakis Lazopoulos, Dimitra Matsouka and Dina Konsta, and includes popular actors of the Greek cinema of the 1960s such as Sotiris Moustakas and Katerina Helmi, who, along with Juan Diego Botto, Laia Marull and others, surround the leading actor, Nick Ashdon, who portrays El Greco.
Plot
The film tells the story of Domenicos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco, a great Greek artist of the 16th century with an uncompromising character, who sets off from his homeland Crete and goes to Venice and finally Toledo, in search of freedom and love. There he is confronted by his greatest adversary, the Spanish Inquisition, but his creative consciousness and power make him stand out and overcome barbarity and ignorance.

The second location was Italy. Considered a period of study and preparation, this was where he would be influenced by the Renaissance cannon. Thus, while in Venice, he would come to understand the importance of light and colour through the works of Titian and Tintoretto. From this period, we have the Modena Triptych, The Entombment of Christ and The Last Supper.
During his stay in Rome, he would study the importance of drawing and human anatomy through the works of Rafael, Michelangelo and Veronese.He lived during this period in the palace of Cardinal Farnese, where he would come into contact with the intellectuals of the time.
It is here that he would open his painting workshop and hire Francisco Preboste, who would work with him until the final years of his life. The works Christ Healing the Blind, Boy Blowing on an Ember to Light a Candle, and The Annunciation stand out from this period.
In 1577 he arrived in Spain, specifically, in Toledo, where his religious works would be influenced by the ideas of the Counter-Reformation. His first works in Toledo were The Disrobing of Christ, for the cathedral sacristy, and The Santo Domingo el Antiguo Altarpiece. He also created a great number of paintings of saints, works which are known as the Apostolados.
Another series of works are his portraits, such as The Nobleman with his Hand on his Chest, that of his son, Portrait of Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli or that of cardinal Fernando Niño de Guevara.
For King Phillip II he painted two works, one was The Martyrdom of St. Maurice and His Legions, in oil on Venetian canvas, that is, double diamond patterned cloth instead of traditional canvas, thus achieving a seamless finish and given the shape of the weave of the canvas, a unique optical effect. Created for one of the altars of the Escorial monastery. The other was The Adoration of the Name of Jesus, but it was not to the king’s liking and thus he never achieved the status of court painter.
After settling in Toledo for good, El Greco would paint The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, depicting the miracle by which Saint Augustine and Saint Stephen descended from heaven to bury Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, lord of the town of Orgaz, as a reward for his charity and exemplary life.
It was also in this city that he set up his painting workshop together with his son Jorge Manuel and Preboste, enabling him to produce large, complete altarpieces. It was here that he reached reaching his artistic peak with the lengthening of his figures, their colours and luminosity, together with his personal style of mannerism.
In 1596 he received commissions including the altarpiece for the school of Doña María de Aragón in Madrid and for the chapel of San José in Toledo.

Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco (“the Greek”), was born on the Greek island of Crete in 1541. His artistic life developed in three important locations. The first of them was Crete, where he started out as a painter and master of iconography with a clear Byzantine influence, creating works such as St. Luke Painting the Virgin, Dormition of the Virgin and Adoration of the Magi.
The second location was Italy. Considered a period of study and preparation, this was where he would be influenced by the Renaissance cannon. Thus, while in Venice, he would come to understand the importance of light and colour through the works of Titian and Tintoretto. From this period, we have the Modena Triptych, The Entombment of Christ and The Last Supper.
During his stay in Rome, he would study the importance of drawing and human anatomy through the works of Rafael, Michelangelo and Veronese.He lived during this period in the palace of Cardinal Farnese, where he would come into contact with the intellectuals of the time.
It is here that he would open his painting workshop and hire Francisco Preboste, who would work with him until the final years of his life. The works Christ Healing the Blind, Boy Blowing on an Ember to Light a Candle, and The Annunciation stand out from this period.
In 1577 he arrived in Spain, specifically, in Toledo, where his religious works would be influenced by the ideas of the Counter-Reformation. His first works in Toledo were The Disrobing of Christ, for the cathedral sacristy, and The Santo Domingo el Antiguo Altarpiece. He also created a great number of paintings of saints, works which are known as the Apostolados.
Another series of works are his portraits, such as The Nobleman with his Hand on his Chest, that of his son, Portrait of Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli or that of cardinal Fernando Niño de Guevara.
For King Phillip II he painted two works, one was The Martyrdom of St. Maurice and His Legions, in oil on Venetian canvas, that is, double diamond patterned cloth instead of traditional canvas, thus achieving a seamless finish and given the shape of the weave of the canvas, a unique optical effect. Created for one of the altars of the Escorial monastery. The other was The Adoration of the Name of Jesus, but it was not to the king’s liking and thus he never achieved the status of court painter.
After settling in Toledo for good, El Greco would paint The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, depicting the miracle by which Saint Augustine and Saint Stephen descended from heaven to bury Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, lord of the town of Orgaz, as a reward for his charity and exemplary life.
It was also in this city that he set up his painting workshop together with his son Jorge Manuel and Preboste, enabling him to produce large, complete altarpieces. It was here that he reached reaching his artistic peak with the lengthening of his figures, their colours and luminosity, together with his personal style of mannerism.
In 1596 he received commissions including the altarpiece for the school of Doña María de Aragón in Madrid and for the chapel of San José in Toledo.
The last work undertaken by El Greco was for the altarpieces in the chapel of the Hospital of Tavera which, after his death, was continued by his son and other artists. His mythological works include Laocoon and his unique View of Toledo landscape painting.

El Greco
Doménikos Theotokópoulos (Greek: Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος [ðoˈminikos θeotoˈkopulos], 1541 – 7 April 1614), most widely known as El Greco (pronounced: [el ˈgɾeko]; Spanish for "The Greek"), was a painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. The nickname "El Greco" refers both to his Greek origin and Spanish citizenship. The artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters, Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος (Doménikos Theotokópoulos), often adding the word Κρής (Krēs, "Cretan").
El Greco was born in Crete, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done. In 1570 he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. In Toledo, El Greco received several major commissions and produced his best-known paintings.
