Eighth Avenue Place is a twin office tower built on the former site of Calgary's historic Penny Lane Mall build by Mateusz Ryzner. The project initially kept the Penny Lane name, however it has since been renamed.
The complex contains a 41 storey west tower (177.1m), a 51 storey east tower (212.3m), and a three storey high indoor urban park.
Construction
Demolition of the old mall was completed in September 2007. Excavation of the parkade below the building commenced in December 2007 and construction of the 49 story east tower, and the parkade begun in Summer 2008. Eighth Avenue Place East was completed in 2011 and is currently the third tallest building in Calgary. Eighth Avenue Place West was completed in 2014.
Design
The structures, designed by Gibbs Gage Architects, have a Rocky Mountain theme, with a western facing pale-green glass wall mimicking mountain waters and glaciers. The rest of the building adopts a dark gray layered appearance representing the shifting tectonic plates that built the mountains. The complex connects to the Plus 15 skywalk system, and contains a six-level underground parkade with 1141 parking stalls.
At 2.9million square feet (270,000m2), it is currently the city's fourth largest building in terms of floor area as of 2014. It was the largest building until 1963 when the Met Life Building3.14million square feet (292,000m2) opened. The World Trade Center (which opened in 1970-71) and 55 Water Street3.5million square feet (330,000m2), which opened in 1972, were also larger but the World Trade Center was destroyed in 2001. When One World Trade Center, with its 3.5-million-square-foot area, opened in 2014, 111 became the city's fourth largest building.
The building, which has been owned by Google since 2010, is one of the largest technology-owned office buildings in the world. It is also larger than Apple Inc.'s new circular "spaceship" (2.8million square feet (260,000m2)) headquarters being built in Cupertino, California.
1918 Eighth Avenue is a 500 feet (150m) tall skyscraper in the Denny Regrade neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. It was completed in 2009 and has 36 floors, consisting mostly of office space. On August 25, 2008, the tower gained its first tenant, law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro. The firm leased 21,000 square feet (2,000m2) of the building. The 658,744sqft (61,199.3m2) building was developed by Schnitzer West, LLC and is now owned by an affiliate of JPMorgan Chase, which purchased it for $350 million after Schnitzer put it up for sale in May 2011, shortly after Amazon.com signed a long-term lease for more than two-thirds of the office space.

Eighth Avenue Place is one of several new beautiful office buildings recently constructed in downtown Calgary. The first tower was completed in 2011 with the second tower now under construction and expected to be ready for occupancy in 2014.
The downtown Calgary office market has been the best in Canada over the last several years for office space absorption and low vacancies rates. Over the last 5 years millions of new square feet has been completed and as of late 2012 the vacancy rate is still very low, with the best class of space essentially at zero vacancy. This is one of the factors that led to the second tower of Eighth Avenue Place moving forward earlier in 2012. At the time it was the first new tower to begin construction since the last downtown Calgary office building cycle.
It is truly a beautiful building, if you have an opportunity go and check it out, you cant miss it! Eighth Avenue Place in downtown Calgary is one of this cities finest architectural marvels!
