The Day the Army of the Potomac Sets Sail
160 years ago today, on March 17th 1862, the leading elements of the Army of the Potomac embarked for the largest amphibious operation ever attempted in North America. Moving over 100,000 men--along with the necessary supplies and munitions--was a historic logistical task that fell to one man. Not General George McClellan. Not President Lincoln. Not even the Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. Today, we talk about the man who moved the largest field army in North America and how he did it in record time. Remarkably, you've probably never heard of him.
Today's video is part of an ongoing "On to Richmond" series, where we follow the progress of George McClellan's campaign up the Virginia peninsula to the gates of Richmond, 160 years later. Subscribe to the channel and join the march!

In Defense of George McClellan
For over a century Civil War historians have claimed that George McClellan was a terrible Civil War general, and some have even claimed that he is the sole reason why the Union army did not win the war in the first two years.
However that is not the whole story. Beneath the claims of incompetence lies a deeper story, one that actually has Lincoln and his cabinet to blame. In todays In Defense of I defend General George McClellan.

Little Mac: Letters From George B. McClellan
It's been written that Helen of Troy possessed "the face that launched a thousand ships." Well, may I introduce to you Ellen Marcy McClellan, the wife of Union MG George Brinton McClellan, who launched thousands of words. Her husband wrote to her daily, and through his letters, we know so much more than, perhaps, he ever intended for us to know.
Excerpts of more than 250 of his letters to her were included by Geroge McClellan's literary executor, William C. Prime, in his biographical work McClellan's Own Story which was published in 1887-two years after the general's death. Prime wanted to honor McClellan-to tell his side of the story. However, the biographer's work reopened old wounds and damaged, forever, McClellan's military reputation. This is the story of the brilliant yet controver...

This is the story of the brilliant yet controversial "Young Napoleon"...the Union's "Little Mac."

Major General McClellan's massive Army of the Potomac is nearing Richmond. As he draws near, he gives command of the newly-organized V Corps of the Army of the Potomac to one of his favorite lieutenants, Brigadier General Fitz John Porter. General Porter's mission provided to him by McClellan is threefold: clear the rumored 17,000 Confederates out of Hanover County and open the way for Major General Irvin McDowell's I Corps to link up with the Army of the Potomac; destroy the brigades over the Pamunkey River; and cut the Virginia Central Railroad. As he moves towards Hanover Court House to begin his mission, his troops encounter elements of Brigadier General Lawrence O'Bryan Branch's command around the courthouse and nearby Slash Church. The ensuing battle between Hanover Court House and Slash Church would result in the "High Tide" of McClellan's Peninsula Campaign.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Seven Pines or Fair Oaks from May 31st - June 1st, activity by the Union Army of the Potomac against the Confederate capital has settled down to a lull as Major General George B. McClellan begins entrenching his army corps in preparation for a massive siege against Richmond. During this time, the Confederate defenders are not idle. General Robert E. Lee, having taken command of General Joseph E. Johnston's forces on June 2nd after the latter's wounding at Seven Pines, has reorganized his various commands and divisions into a new force he has branded the "Army of Northern Virginia." He plans to use his divisions in a grand gamble to counter-attack McClellan's army and drive it away from Richmond. The planned start date for Lee's attack is Thursday, June 26th. However, much to Lee's surprise McClellan suddenly launches a probing attack against Richmond's outer defensive works around Oak Grove west of Seven Pines on Wednesday, June 25th, 1862. Although not planned in Lee's counter-offensive, the Battle of Oak Grove, also known as the Battle of French's Field or Battle of King's School House, marks the official start of the Seven Days Battles.
