The Mystery of Edward Rowe Snow's "Walled Up Alive"
Pure fabrication, or fact? I'm not sure.
Snow was a historian known for researching his books in extreme depth. Also, the rest of the accounts in this book are verifiable, even the accounts of merpeople. Not to say that merpeople are fact; I'm just saying that the accounts in the book are from real people who believed what is said.
The photograph is a real photograph with an overlaid sketch to show how exactly Abrantes's sketch fits the cracks and contours of the wall.
The Internet does not have anything on the case; however, events that are not well-known are rarely found on the Internet. No exact dates are given, which makes it even harder to track down stone mason Michael Abrantes in historical context. The Internet does not have anything on the case; however, events that are not well-known are rarely found on the Internet. No exact dates are given, which makes it even harder to track down stone mason Michael Abrantes in historical context. Snow lived in the Boston area -- he could easily have researched records and dwellings deemed too unimportant to appear on the Web in person. I have no doubt that he could have accessed information to which anyone outside of Boston could never hope to touch.
Another thing: this is the only story in the entire book which really has nothing to do with the sea. The only reason I can think of for its inclusion is Snow's desire to let people know about this event. Even though he couldn't tell us exactly where the wall is because of the home-owner's wishes, he wanted people to know about this tragic mystery.
As for me, the best I can turn up is a case of human remains found during demolition work on a Massachusetts home. Do some of these bones belong to the woman in Snow's account? Hard to say. This case involves multiple skeletons, but just because Abrantes was only witness to one woman's entombment, it doesn't mean that that was the only one that ever occurred there. No foul play is suspected, but that doesn't mean that none occurred. "Over a century old" would also be about right for the time of the death.
Is this a stretch? Probably. But nonetheless, I can't believe that no one has put effort into investigating the case of "Walled Up Alive."
Check out the Winchester case (it's pretty cool, either way):
