Edward St. John Gorey (February 22, 1925– April 15, 2000) was an American writer and artist noted for his illustrated books. His characteristic pen-and-ink drawings often depict vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings.
Early life
Edward St. John Gorey was born in Chicago. His parents, Helen Dunham (née Garvey) and Edward Lee Gorey, divorced in 1936 when he was 11, then remarried in 1952 when he was 27. One of his stepmothers was Corinna Mura (1909–1965), a cabaret singer who had a small role in the classic film Casablanca as the woman playing the guitar while singing "La Marseillaise" at Rick's Café Américain. His father was briefly a journalist. Gorey's maternal great-grandmother, Helen St. John Garvey, was a popular nineteenth-century greeting card writer and artist, from whom he claimed to have inherited his talents.
Gorey (/ˈɡoʊr.iː/; Irish:Guaire) is a market town in north County Wexford, Ireland. It is beside the main M11Dublin to Wexford road. The town is also connected to the railway network along the same route. Local newspapers include the Gorey Guardian and Gorey Echo.
Gorey is an hour's drive from the southern outskirts of Dublin. Gorey's position on the N11/M11 – a direct link to the capital – has made it an attractive choice for commuters, many of whom spend less time travelling to work than their counterparts living in particular areas of Dublin. As a result, there has been a dramatic increase in the building of new houses in Gorey. Between 1996 and 2002, the population has risen by 44% in the town, and by 23% in the surrounding district.
Amenities
Many new shops have been added in the last few years, including the Gorey Shopping Centre; Esmonde Street has been developed from a residential street to a mainly-commercial street and, by all appearances, a similar transformation is occurring on 'The Avenue'. Five supermarkets compete for customers in the town.
