Being independently administered jurisdictions, they are not part of the United Kingdom or British Overseas Territories. They are self-governing possessions of the Crown (defined uniquely in each jurisdiction). However, internationally, the dependencies are recognised as "territories for which the United Kingdom is responsible". As a result, they are not member states of the Commonwealth of Nations, nor, save for a limited extent, a part of the European Union. However, they do have a relationship with the Commonwealth, EU, and other international organisations and are members of the British–Irish Council.
Although the Crown dependencies are not sovereign states in their own right, the power to pass legislation affecting the islands ultimately rests with their own respective legislative assemblies, with the assent of the Crown (Privy Council, or in the case of the Isle of Man in certain circumstances the Lieutenant-Governor). In 2005, Jersey followed the Isle of Man and Guernsey in creating the role of Chief Minister to serve as the island's head of government.
Education in the British Crown dependencies is a devolved matter with each of the dependencies having separate systems that are autonomous but dependent on England for models and examples.

British Crown Dependencies
The Crown dependencies are self-governing possessions of the British Crown. They are distinct from the overseas territories of the United Kingdom. As of 2013, three jurisdictions held this status: the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey in the English Channel and the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea.
