Edward Sanders (born August 17, 1939) is an American poet, singer, social activist, environmentalist, author, publisher and longtime member of the band The Fugs. He has been called a bridge between the Beat and Hippie generations. Sanders is considered to have been active and "present at the counterculture's creation."
Sanders wrote his first notable poem, "Poem from Jail", on toilet paper in his cell after being jailed for protesting the launch of nuclear submarines armed with nuclear missiles in 1961. In 1962, he founded the avant-garde journal Fuck You/A Magazine of the Arts. Sanders opened the Peace Eye Bookstore at 383 East Tenth Street in what was then the Lower East Side; the store became a gathering place for bohemians, writers and radicals. On January 1, 1966, police raided Peace Eye Bookstore and charged Sanders with obscenity, charges he fended off with the aid of the ACLU. Notoriety generated by the case led to his appearance on the February 17, 1967 cover of Life Magazine, which proclaimed him "a leader of New York's Other Culture."
Hayes Edward "Big Ed" Sanders (March 24, 1930 – December 12, 1954) was an American heavyweight boxer who won an Olympic gold medal in 1952.
Personal
As a child, Sanders, the oldest male child of the family, was mature and physically strong. He collected coffee cans, filled them with cement and connected two of them with a steel bar to make a weight set for exercising. As he grew bigger, faster and stronger, Sanders excelled in football and track and field at Jordan High School. On May 26, 2012 Sanders was inducted into the Compton Community College Athletics Hall of Fame, under the category of boxing.
Early life
After graduating from Jordan High School, Sanders attended Compton College, where he again excelled in football and a new sport, boxing. In 1950, at the National Junior College Boxing Championships in Ogden, Utah, the six-foot four-inch, 220 pound Sanders attracted the attention of Idaho State College boxing coach Dubby Holt and football coach Babe Caccia. "He had a good left hand, and for the big man that he was, he was a real orthodox, skilled boxer," Holt recalled. Shortly thereafter, Sanders was awarded an athletic scholarship to Idaho State College (now Idaho State University) in Pocatello, Idaho, where he boxed and played football.
Ed Sanders (born 10 May 1968) is an English carpenter, actor, and television host.
Sanders was born in Wimbledon, London. He learned carpentry at his father's behest to help keep himself employed between acting jobs.
In 1999, he landed the role of Eddie Moliano in the Sky1 series Dream Team. He was a reporter for the morning show RI:SE, and eventually became host of the UK version of Fear Factor.
Move to the United States
In 2004, Sanders moved to the U.S. with his wife and son. He was hired to work as a carpenter and designer on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, where he was severely injured, slicing through his hand, nearly severing his thumb. After months of surgery and therapy, he returned to the show.
During the summer of 2007, Sanders hosted the six episode run of National Bingo Night on ABC, a ratings failure.
On August 15, 2013, AMC debuted the new reality show Owner's Manual hosted by Ed Sanders and Marcus Hunt.
Limey Yank Productions
In 2006 Sanders started Limey Yank Productions, a creative production company, with American writer Whit Honea. The company name is a play on the slang terms "Limey" due to Sanders being British, and "Yank" as Honea is from the U.S.
