Ecological Succession-Primary and Secondary
Ecological Succession occurs when an ecosystem has a disturbance and must regrow. Succession is all about change.
There are two main types of succession, primary and secondary.
Primary occurs when an area has been almost destroyed and little life or soil remains.
Pioneer species are the first plants to regrow.
Secondary succession occurs where you have a disturbance but the soil remains.

Ecological Succession
Paul Andersen describes the process of ecological succession. During this process life reestablished itself after a disturbance. During primary success all of the material is removed including the soil. For example during a volcanic eruption all traces of life are removed. However during secondary success the soil remains intact. An example of secondary success is wildfires.

How do ecosystems change over time? (Ecological Succession)
How do ecosystems change over time?
Ecological succession, also called Biological succession occurs when one ecological community changes into another.
There are two main types of ecological succession.
Primary and Secondary Succession.
Primary Succession occurs when there is no soil and the new community has to start without any soil.
Secondary succession occurs when an event destroys an area but the soil remains.
The pioneer species are the first plants to appear in the new ecosystem.

Ecological succession is the observed process of change in the species structure of an ecological community over time. The community begins with relatively few pioneering plants and animals and develops through increasing complexity until it becomes stable or self-perpetuating as a climax community. The ʺengineʺ of succession, the cause of ecosystem change, is the impact of established species have upon their own environments. A consequence of living is the sometimes subtle and sometimes overt alteration of one's own environment. [1]
It is a phenomenon or process by which an ecological community undergoes more or less orderly and predictab...

It is a phenomenon or process by which an ecological community undergoes more or less orderly and predictable changes following disturbance or initial colonization of new habitat. Succession may be initiated either by formation of new, unoccupied habitat (e.g., a lava flow or a severe landslide) or by some form of disturbance (e.g. fire, severe windthrow, logging) of an existing community. Succession that begins in new habitats, uninfluenced by pre-existing communities is called primary succession, whereas succession that follows disruption of a pre-existing community is called secondary succession.
Succession was among the first theories advanced in ecology and the study of succession remains at the core of ecological science. Ecological succession was first documented in the Indiana Dunes of Northwest Indiana[2] which led to efforts to preserve the Indiana Dunes.[2][3] Exhibits on ecological succession are displayed in the Hour Glass, a museum in Ogden Dunes.
