William "Smokey" Robinson, Jr. (born February 19, 1940) is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and former record executive. Robinson was the founder and front man of the Motown vocal group the Miracles, for which he also served as the group's chief songwriter and producer. Robinson led the group from its 1955 origins as the Five Chimes until 1972 when he announced a retirement from the group to focus on his role as Motown's vice president.
However, Robinson returned to the music industry as a solo artist the following year, later scoring Top 10 solo hits such as "Cruisin'" (1979), "Being With You" (1981) and "Just to See Her" (1987). Following the sale of Motown Records in 1988, Robinson left the company in 1990. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
Smokey Robinson was born to an African-American father and a mother of African-American and distant French ancestry into a poor family in the North End area of Detroit. He was raised by his elder sister and her husband, after his mother died of a brain hemorrhage. His uncle Claude gave him the nickname "Smokey Joe" when he was a child. He attended Northern High School, where he was above average academically and a keen athlete, though his main interest was music and he formed a doo-wop group named the Five Chimes. At one point, he and Diana Ross lived several houses from each other on Belmont; he once said he has known Ross since she was about eight.
Ebony Eyes may refer to:
"Ebony Eyes" is a song written by John D. Loudermilk, recorded in 1961 by The Everly Brothers (b/w "Walk Right Back"), and reached No. 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics tell a young man's tragic story of losing his beloved fiancee in an airplane crash during the dark, bad weather, which reminds him of her "ebony eyes".
It is noticeable that the drums begin with a soft intermittent roll at the point where the spoken text says, "..beacon light in the control tower .." which actually does remind one of a rotating lighthouse beacon.
The single, with reversed sides, reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart. The song was initially banned by the BBC as its lyrics were considered too upsetting to play on the radio.
"Ebony Eyes" is a 1983 hit R&B single recorded by African-American singers Rick James and Smokey Robinson for the Gordy (Motown) label. It was first featured on James' album Cold Blooded. The song was produced and arranged by Rick James. It peaked at #43 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Ebony Eyes was a collaborative effort by Smokey Robinson and Rick James. It was first released on the album Cold Blooded, the title song quickly became Rick James' third number one R&B hit but Ebony Eyes also climbed the R&B/Hip Hop charts and peaked at number 22. Ebony Eyes remains one of James' most notable hits as it is one of the few to not use the style he labeled "punk-funk" but instead uses a more contemporary tempo and follows a more classic style of R&B. Robinson was credited for singing the introduction, bridge, and other more calm verses while James sang the chorus.
Ebony Eyes begins with a simple beat which leads into a more complex rhythm and the vocals of both Robinson and uncredited background vocalist who repeat falsetto vocals twice before Robinson begins the opening verse. The song chronicles the narrators affection for a certain woman. Lost for words and made weak by the mere presence of this lady, Robinson requires James' vocals to reveal how he really feels about this woman, who James thinks is unaware of his affection and apparent need for her. It is a ode to love for Women of Color -hence the title Ebony Eyes.

Classic Motown
Mitra I. Arthur | October 16, 2023 Legend is a word thrown around far too often. But if there was ever an artist the word "legend" applies to, it would be Smokey Robinson. The iconic songwriter, producer and vocalist was not only a key architect of the Motown sound, but also R&B and soul music as a whole. His uncanny ability to craft tender and catchy romantic tunes has served as a model for songwriters that followed in the decades since he began his career. 1981's "Being With You" opens the Tiny Desk to immediately alert us that, at 83 years young, his sweet and sensual falsetto is present and ready to dazzle. From there, he casually introduces one of his numerous hits with The Miracles, "The Tears Of A Clown," as "one I wrote with Stevie Wonder" to the audience's delight. Robinson's pen...
A wonderful song by two great singers. Rest in Peace Rick.

I did you wrong
my heart went out to play
But in the game
I lost you
What a price to pay
I'm cryin'
Ooh baby baby
Ooh baby baby
Mistakes, I know
I've made a few
But I'm only human
you've made mistakes too
Im cryin'
Ooh baby baby
Ooh baby baby
I'm just about at
the end of my rope
But I can't stop tryin'
I can't give up hope
Cause I feel that one day
I'll hold you near
whisper "I still love you"
Until that day is here
ooh, I'm crying
Ooh baby baby
Ooh baby baby
Ooh baby baby
