Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson (March 3, 1923 – May 29, 2012) was an American guitarist, songwriter, and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music. Watson won seven Grammy awards as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Watson's flatpicking skills and knowledge of traditional American music were highly regarded. He performed with his son, guitarist Merle Watson, for over 15 years until Merle's death in 1985 in an accident on the family farm.
Watson was born in Deep Gap, North Carolina. According to Watson on his three-CD biographical recording Legacy, he got the nickname "Doc" during a live radio broadcast when the announcer remarked that his given name Arthel was odd and he needed an easy nickname. A fan in the crowd shouted "Call him Doc!" presumably in reference to the literary character Sherlock Holmes's sidekick Doctor Watson. The name stuck ever since.
An eye infection caused Doc Watson to lose his vision before his first birthday. He was taught by his parents to work hard and care for himself. He attended North Carolina's school for the visually impaired, The Governor Morehead School, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Doc Watson is the self-titled debut album by Doc Watson, released by Vanguard Records in 1964. The musical supervision was credited to Ralph Rinzler.
It was re-issued on CD by Ace Records in 1995 and numerous tracks have been used in compilations such as Vanguard Years and The Best of Doc Watson 1964-1968.
In celebration of Vanguard Records 60th Anniversary in 2010, it was re-issued with original artwork on a limited edition 180 gram vinyl record pressing of 500 copies for Record Store Day on April 17.
Writing for Allmusic, music critic Jim Smith wrote the album "The album is incredibly varied, from the stark, banjo-driven "Country Blues" to the humorous "Intoxicated Rat," and many of these songs became Watson standards, especially his signature song "Black Mountain Rag." His incredible flat-picking skills may have been what initially wowed his audiences, but it was Watson's complete mastery of the folk idiom that assured his lasting popularity."
Charles John "Doc" Watson (January 30, 1886 in Carroll County, Ohio – December 30, 1949 in San Diego, California) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball.
East Tennessee is a name given to approximately the eastern third of the U.S. state of Tennessee, one of the three Grand Divisions of Tennessee defined in state law. East Tennessee consists of 33 counties, 30 located within the Eastern Time Zone and three counties in the Central Time Zone, namely Bledsoe, Cumberland, and Marion. East Tennessee is entirely located within the Appalachian Mountains, although the landforms range from densely forested 6,000-foot (1,800 m) mountains to broad river valleys. The region contains the major cities of Knoxville and Chattanooga, Tennessee's third and fourth largest cities, respectively.
East Tennessee is both geographically and culturally part of Appalachia, and has been included— along with Western North Carolina, North Georgia, Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, and the state of West Virginia— in every major definition of the Appalachian region since the early 20th century. East Tennessee is home to the nation's most visited national park— the Great Smoky Mountains National Park— and hundreds of smaller recreational areas. East Tennessee is often called the birthplace of country music, due largely to the 1927 Victor recording sessions in Bristol, and throughout the 20th and 21st centuries has produced a steady stream of musicians of national and international fame.Oak Ridge was the site of the world's first successful uranium enrichment operations which paved the way for the atomic age. The Tennessee Valley Authority, created to spur economic development and help modernize the region's economy and society, has its administrative operations headquartered in Knoxville and its power operations headquartered in Chattanooga.
Tennessee (i/tɛnᵻˈsiː/) (Cherokee: ᏔᎾᏏ, Tanasi) is a U.S. state located in the Southeastern United States. Tennessee is the 36th largest and the 17th most populous of the 50 United States. Tennessee is bordered by Kentucky and Virginia to the north, North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi to the south, and Arkansas and Missouri to the west. The Appalachian Mountains dominate the eastern part of the state, and the Mississippi River forms the state's western border. Tennessee's capital and second largest city is Nashville, which has a population of 601,222. Memphis is the state's largest city, with a population of 653,450.
The state of Tennessee is rooted in the Watauga Association, a 1772 frontier pact generally regarded as the first constitutional government west of the Appalachians. What is now Tennessee was initially part of North Carolina, and later part of the Southwest Territory. Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 16th state on June 1, 1796. Tennessee was the last state to leave the Union and join the Confederacy at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War in 1861. Occupied by Union forces from 1862, it was the first state to be readmitted to the Union at the end of the war.
Tennessee is the second full-length album by punk/alt-country band Lucero. It was released in 2002.
In the City is the debut album by American singer-songwriter and producer Kevin Rudolf. It was released nationwide, physically and digitally, on November 24, 2008 via Cash Money Records and Universal Republic. Every song on the album was produced and written by Rudolf. "She Can Get It" was a production collaboration between Rudolf and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes. "Let It Rock" was the first single released from the album. The song "NYC" was featured on an episode of CSI: NY and "Let It Rock" was featured on the Melrose Place pilot and The Hills as well as being featured as the theme song for the 2009 WWE Royal Rumble. The album has sold 102,000 copies in the US.
The album's first single, "Let It Rock" reached #2 on the Canadian Hot 100, #5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Australian ARIA charts, and #4 on the Irish Singles Chart.
"Welcome to the World", which single version featuring Kid Cudi is the second single from this album, released in February 2009 has reached #58 on the US Hot 100 and has debuted at number 96 in Australia's Aria Singles Chart and has peaked at number 42.
Doc Watson Performing Deep River Blues YOU GOT TO WATCH IT!!!!!
Doc Watson performs "Tennessee Stud" in 1979.
Let me put it straight out there. I loved Earl Scruggs as a musician and as a man. I also felt the same way about Dr. Watson. I also felt the same way about rules son who is just 16 years old in this documentary, Randy Scruggs. I set up the microphone, sat myself down in his seat with my handheld 16mm camera, and they just played. Having fun. On Doc Watson's front lawn at his home in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina. Watch another clip from the same recording session - https://youtu.be/te_OoPaEFK0 . My classic 90 minute music documentary records Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe and Earl and his son Randy and Doc Watson and his son Merle, in informal scenes playing & singing together. If you love Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and old time Bluegrass Music, you will love watch...
Apologies for the poor quality of sound. After trawling around here for this version I decided to dig an old cassette tape version out and share it with the world. It's the reason I bought a banjo in the first place, but obviously my own awkward attempts can't get anywhere near this superb rendition by the Doc and his late Son Merle. Just heard of the tragic loss from a Youtuber, yngeldorf. Doc's death yesterday leaves a huge gap in the surviving contributors of 20th Century culture. RIP Doc.

This is a great UNC-TV production from around 1997. Lot's of great blues ...Doc is accompanied by his grandson Richard Watson - Merle's son. Doc has often been called a national treasure but his influence goes far beyond the US. Doc was a an international icon revered all over the world. As a matter of fact the first time I saw Doc was in Nagoya, Japan. He performed with Merle and T Michael Coleman. I was born about six thousand years ago
They ain't nothin' in this world that I don't know
I saw Old King Pharaoh's daughter find Little Moses on the water
And I can whip the man that says it isn't so
I saw Noah when he built that famous ark
I slipped into it one night when it got dark
I saw Jonah swallowed by the whale, and I pulled the lion's tail
I can whip the man that says it isn't so
I'm an educated man, to get more sense within my head I plan
Well, I've been on earth so long, and I used to sing a little song
While all of them old timers took their stand
Queen Elizabeth fell dead in love with me, (hee, hee, she did)
We was married in Milwaukee secretly
Then I took her out and shook her, and I went with General Hooker
To fight mosquitoes down in Tennessee.
I taught Solomon his little A B C's (smart feller)
And through all his books, I tutored him with ease
Then I sailed out on the bay with Methuselah one day
And I played with his flowing whiskers in the breeze
I'm an educated man, to get more sense within my head I plan
Well, I've been on earth so long, and I used to sing a little song
While all of them old timers took their stand
I seen old Satan when he searched that Garden o'er, (old booger)
Saw Adam and Eve driven from the door
When the applese they were eating, from the bushes I was a-peeping
I can prove it from the man that ate the core
I saw Cain when he killed Abel with a spade
And I know the game was poker that they played
I was hid behind the shrub when he slapped him with that club
Poor old Abel caught him a-cheatin', and now he's dead
I'm an educated man, to get more sense within my head I plan
Well, I've been on earth so long, and I used to sing a little song
