When I first arrived in Australia I went on a 4-Day welcome tour with the amazing team at Welcome To Travel. I was offered the chance, at the end of those days, to get my 88 days of work for my second year completed as soon as possible. I jumped at the chance and found myself taking a bus to Bairnsdale to become part of the first group to stay at the newly opened Bairnsdale Workers Accommodation.
Azza and Yvonne were fantastic hosts, getting us jobs at a nearby factory, recommending a number of local sights to see and taking us on trips to visit some of these areas. As a local, Azza had lots of history and stories to tell us, as well as a fantastic taste in food and beer. A highlight of my time here was definitely being asked to be the videographer for their wedding, just before I left town the first time.
On top of this, I also became friends with another local man named David Batty, who's family came from the High Country and had even more knowledge of those areas and took myself and another backpacker on day trips up into the mountains where we discovered Australian ski resorts and, on my final trip, a snowstorm! David's trips showed off some areas backpackers would never know to visit, and provided some real insight into those areas and how farming has impacted the area over the past century or so.
Among the many other highlights of my time in the region include: playing cricket for Wy Yung Cricket Club, seeing wild koalas for the first time on Raymond Island, the Boxing Day Float down the Mitchell River, New Years Eve at Lakes Entrance, a trip to the Bairnsdale Racecourse on Melbourne Cup day and many, many Saturday nights spent at the Club Hotel watching pub bands.
I made sure to return to Bairnsdale before I came home, and will always have fond memories of this lesser known, but incredibly impressive, corner of Australia. I hope to one day return.
