East Boston, popularly known as Eastie, is a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts with approximately 40,000 residents. The neighborhood was created by connecting several islands using landfill. It was annexed by Boston in 1836. It is separated from the city proper by Boston Harbor and bordered by Winthrop, Revere, and the Chelsea Creek. Directly west of East Boston, across Boston Harbor, is the North End and Boston's Financial District. East Boston has long provided a foothold for the latest immigrants with Irish, Russian Jews and then Italians alternating as the predominant group. From the 1990s into the early millennium, Latin American immigrants settled in East Boston. In recent years, East Boston has become home to a wave of young professionals seeking residence in Boston in newly renovated condominiums along Jeffries Point, Maverick Square, and the Eagle Hill waterfront. Jeffries Point specifically has become one of the most desirable neighborhoods, due to its location to the harbor, marinas, and Piers Park. The Kennedy family resided in East Boston. The neighborhood is easily accessible to downtown Boston via the MBTABlue Line. Originally, five islands made up the East Boston neighborhood. To connect to the mainland, routes, highways, and bridges had to be built. Some popular structures built to bridge that gap between the islands and the mainland include the Tobin Bridge, the Sumner Tunnel and the Callahan Tunnel. The Logan Airport is located in East Boston connecting to international locations.
The East Boston Greenway is a shared use path and park in East Boston that is located along the path of a former Conrail line. The greenway connects several significant open space areas in East Boston, including Piers Park, Memorial Stadium, Bremen Street Park, Wood Island Bay Marsh and Belle Isle Marsh. When completed, the line is expected to be 3.3 miles in length.
History
Originally, the line in East Boston was built for industrial usage by the Grand Junction Railroad and Depot Company. At points, the Greenway parallels the tracks of the former Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad, now the MBTA's Blue Line. After Conrail abandoned the tracks, the area became a dumping ground, and the area was first cleaned up by residents in 1978. Around this time, there was talk about converting the land into a bike trail, although it took the donation of over a mile of land by Conrail in 1997 to advance this idea.
The entire community was not necessarily supportive of the idea at first, as the local chamber of commerce wanted to use the route as a truck route to Logan International Airport. This idea gained little support, and construction of the East Boston Greenway began in 1999. In 2007, the Greenway opened.
Boston (1833–1850), was an outstanding chestnut Thoroughbred racehorse and a Leading sire in North America three times from 1851 to 1853. He started in about 45 races, winning 40 of these, including 15 in succession. Boston was later one of the initial inductees into the Hall of Fame.
Breeding
He was a chestnut stallion with a white blaze on his nose and he was foaled in Richmond, Virginia. Boston was bred by the Virginia attorney John Wickham (who had been Aaron Burr's counsel in his trial for treason). He was by the very good racehorse, Timoleon (by the great Sir Archy), his dam was Sister to Tuckahoe by Ball’s Florizel. Boston was inbred to Diomed in the third generation (3m x 3f). He was a half-brother to the Shylock mare who founded a successful family. They were from the number 40 family which traced back to the imported mare, Kitty Fisher.
As a two-year-old, Boston was lost by his breeder in a card game and was given to Wickham's friend Nathaniel Rives, of Richmond to repay his debt of $800. He was named after a popular card game and later given the nickname of "Old Whitenose". Boston had a wilful temperament and was difficult to train. Sent to the stable of John Belcher, and then to the trainer L. White, and then back to Belcher, White said, "The horse should either be castrated or shot—preferably the latter."
The Boston refers to a series of various step dances, considered a slow Americanized version of the waltz presumably named after where it originated. It is completed in one measure with the weight kept on the same foot through two successive beats. The "original" Boston is also known as the New York Boston or Boston Point.
