Earl Thomas Conley (born October 17, 1941, Portsmouth, Ohio, United States) is an Americancountry musicsinger-songwriter. Between 1980 and 2003, he recorded ten studio albums, including seven for the RCA Records label. In the 1980s and into the 1990s, Conley also charted more than thirty singles on the BillboardHot Country Songs charts, of which eighteen reached Number One. Conley's eighteen Billboard Number One country singles during the 1980s marked the most Number One hits by any artist in any genre during that decade except for Alabama and Ronnie Milsap.
Throughout his career, Conley's music has been referred to as "thinking man's country." This is because the narrator looks into the heart and soul of his characters in each song.
Biography
Early life
When Conley was 14, his father lost his job with the railroad, forcing the young boy to move in with his older sister in Jamestown, Ohio. He was offered a scholarship to an art school, but rejected it in favor of joining the U.S. Army. While in the Army, Conley became a member of a Christian-influenced trio, where his musical talent and vocal ability first began. Conley then decided to consider performing as a serious career option. He shifted more deeply into the classic country sounds of artists such as Merle Haggard and George Jones. During this period he first tried his hand at songwriting. In 1968, after his discharge from the Army, Conley began commuting from Dayton to Nashville. In 1973 while in Nashville, Conley met Dick Heard, who produced country music singer Mel Street. This meeting eventually led to the Conley-Heard collaboration on the song "Smokey Mountain Memories," which made the top 10 for Street. After being honorably discharged from the military, he began playing in clubs in Nashville, Tennessee, at night, supporting himself working blue-collar jobs during the day.
Earl Thomas is a Blues singer from California. He is also a songwriter. His songs have been covered by artists such as Tom Jones, Etta James, Solomon Burke and Screamin Jay Hawkins.He has twice been nominated for a Grammy Award and has won the San Diego Music Award four times.
He started out playing the Arcata clubs in the early 1980s while still at university. He was at an open mike night at an Arcata and sang a Jackson Browne number, "Something Fine" which was the start of his performing.
In the early 90's he had moved to San Diego. His Blue...Not Blues album was released in 1991 received favorable reviews and he was referred to by one reviewer as " a pleasant surprise".
In 2008, he played at the Russian River Blues Festival.
Thomas attended West Orange-Stark High School in Orange, Texas, where he played for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs high school football team. While there, he was an all-state selection and three-year starter at defensive back, running back and wide receiver. He recorded 112 career tackles with 11 interceptions, two kickoff return touchdowns and two punt return touchdowns, while also having 8,850 rushing yards and 2,140 receiving yards in his career.
Also a standout athlete, Thomas was on the school's track & field team, where he competed as a sprinter and jumper, and was a member of the 4 × 200 meters relay team that reached the state finals, at 1:27.92. He finished second in the long jump at the 2007 Region 3-3A Meet, with a personal-best mark of 7.14 meters.
