Dworshak National Fish Hatchery is a mitigation hatchery located on the Clearwater River within the Nez Perce Reservation near Orofino, in north-central Idaho. It was constructed in 1969 by the Army Corps of Engineers, and is co-managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Nez Perce Tribe. The hatchery is one of the largest combination producers of anadromous (migratory) fish in the world. These fish make a 1000 mile round trip to the ocean and back to spawn in the Clearwater River. The Dworshak Dam blocks access to the historical spawning areas on the North Fork-Clearwater River for the steelhead, and it is too high for a fish ladder.
Steelhead, chinook and coho salmon are spawned and reared at the facility. The hatchery attempts to mitigate or make up for some of the lost spawning area by collecting mature adult fish, fertilizing their eggs, and raising them for 1–1½ years, until they are large enough to begin their 500 mile journey to the Pacific ocean. The young fish must survive a variety of hazards in the long journey, including swimming past eight dams on the Snake and Columbia Rivers. During the summer months the dams increase their water releases to aid fish migration downstream.
The National Fish Hatchery System (NFHS) was established by the U.S. Congress in 1871 through the creation of a U.S. Commissioner for Fish and Fisheries. This system of fish hatcheries is now administered by the Fisheries Program of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), an agency within the United States Department of the Interior.
History
When early pioneers began migrating to the western United States, there were no catch limits on fish and no laws preventing people from modifying fish habitats to meet human needs for water, food, and safety. As settlement progressed, abundant fish populations began to decline. By 1870, growing concern for such declines prompted fishery studies, which spurred the establishment of fish spawning stations for collecting and hatching fish eggs and stocking small fish back into waters with declining fisheries. Many of these early spawning stations later became fish hatcheries, marking the beginning of the Fisheries Program and the NFHS.
A fish hatchery is a "place for artificial breeding, hatching and rearing through the early life stages of animals, finfish and shellfish in particular". Hatcheries produce larval and juvenile fish (and shellfish and crustaceans) primarily to support the aquaculture industry where they are transferred to on-growing systems i.e. fish farms to reach harvest size. Some species that are commonly raised in hatcheries include Pacific oysters, shrimp, Indian prawns, salmon, tilapia and scallops. The value of global aquaculture production is estimated to be US$98.4 billion in 2008 with China significantly dominating the market, however the value of aquaculture hatchery and nursery production has yet to be estimated. Additional hatchery production for small-scale domestic uses, which is particularly prevalent in South-East Asia or for conservation programmes, has also yet to be quantified.
There is much interest in supplementing exploited stocks of fish by releasing juveniles that may be wild caught and reared in nurseries before transplanting, or produced solely within a hatchery. Culture of finfish larvae has been utilised extensively in the United States in stock enhancement efforts to replenish natural populations. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have established a National Fish Hatchery System to support the conservation of native fish species.

The construction of the Daniel Fish Hatchery was let to the Lincoln Lumber Company of Kemmerer, Wyoming to build a 40’ X 50’ building with a cement floor and foundation containing 28 rearing troughs and 1600’ of wooden pipeline to deliver 180gpm of spring water. The cost came in at $5,803.00, and the project was completed in April 1918.
Throughout the years, the Daniel Hatchery has undergone significant renovations to keep up with new technology in fish culture, with improvement and being expanded in 1966 and again in 1999. The Daniel Hatchery and is one of the oldest continuously operating hatcheries in the state.
With two springs supplying approximately 2 million gallons of water a day to the hatchery at an average temperature of 46° F, the Daniel facility performs the important function of incubating and rearing various species of trout which include; brook, brown, cutthroat, golden and lake trout as well as splake, tiger trout and kokanee salmon. The Daniel Fish Hatchery participates in the statewide high mountain lake stocking program, Kokanee salmon and Golden trout programs. In addition to incubation and rearing, the Daniel Hatchery provides spawning, egg incubation, and rearing for one of Wyoming's native populations of cutthroat trout, the Colorado River cutthroat. Offspring from these broods are used for restoration efforts as well as for stocking in fishing waters throughout the state.
Another function provided by the hatchery is due to Daniels' cold water. Hatchery personnel are able to hold back, or slow, the growth of fish. They use this technique to provide small fish for helicopter, horse packing, backpacking and ATV stocking. Three dedicated Department personnel are stationed at the Daniel Hatchery and are responsible for the egg care, incubation, fish rearing, stocking, maintenance and operation of the facility, on a year round basis.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the oldest federal conservation agency, tracing its lineage back to 1871, and the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is management of fish and wildlife for the American public. The Service helps ensure a healthy environment for people by providing opportunities for Americans to enjoy the outdoors and our shared natural heritage.
We manage the National Wildlife Refuge System with more than 560 National Wildlife Refuges as well as small wetlands and other special management areas encompassing more than 150 million acres. Under the Fisheries program we also operate over 70 National Fish Hatcheries and 65 fishery resource offices. The Ecological Services program has 86 field stations across all 50 states.
The vast majority of fish and wildlife habitat is on non-federal lands. Voluntary habitat protection and restoration programs like the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and the Coastal Program and other partnership programs are the primary ways we deliver habitat conservation on public and private lands.
The Service employs approximately 9,000 people at facilities across the U.S. The Service is a decentralized organization with a headquarters office in Washington, D.C., with regional and field offices across the country. Our organizational chart shows structure and also provides information on senior management.
Ennis National Fish Hatchery operates as a brood stock hatchery. There are only three rainbow trout brood stock hatcheries in the nationwide Federal hatchery system.A brood stock hatchery specializes in rearing fish to adult size, then taking eggs from those fish, incubating them, and shipping them to production hatcheries where they are hatched and the fish raised to stockable sizes. The Ennis Hatchery currently has six strains of rainbow trout. You are welcome to visit Ennis National Fish Hatchery. The Hatchery is open 7 days a week. Hatchery staff will normally be available to answer your questions. Visitors are invited to walk around the raceways where most of the adult trout are held, and visit the Hatchery building where eggs and small fish are reared. Group tours are available if scheduled in advance.Visitor center is open in the evenings.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written
language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills

- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through

SUMMARY
=======
Current day-to-day life at Quilcene National Fish Hatchery comprises a focus on the care of fish species such as summer chum or winter steelhead, including their feeding, pond maintenance, and health. The hatchery also works closely alongside certain tribes, not only providing them with fish, but creating a combined effort in restoration of fish populations. Fortunately, the hatchery is open to the public year round for tours, and participates in numbers of community outreach activities. The hatchery is always looking for visitors to come and explore the grounds, and if it's the right time of year, catch a glimpse of adult salmon in their fight back up the Big Quilcene River for spawning!
We strive to make our electronic and information technology accessible to all. Please email us at [email protected] if you need the text of this video.

Stay tuned at a behind the scenes look of what goes into hatching and stocking 4 million fish in one day at the Possum kingdom fish hatchery!

Raising trout at the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Tonto Hatchery is a year round job. Here's a look at what it takes to bring rainbow trout to the angling public.
This video was created by the Information Branch of the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Producer: Carol Lynde
Raising trout at every stage of their life cycle is fairly common at Wyoming's Clarks Fork Fish Hatchery. The hatchery raises kokanee salmon, Bear River cutthroat, Yellowstone Cutthroat, Snake River cutthroat and rainbow trout. Wyoming's 10 hatcheries work together to raises various fish species until they're big enough to be stocked in waters around the state.
