This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers the turmoil in the Frankish Kingdom which led to the rise of Charles Martel who famously defeated the invading forces of the Umayyad Caliphate at the Battle of Tours. His reign and that of his son, Pippin III, who appointed himself as king are briefly covered before the reign of Charlemagne is examined in detail. Charlemagne is without a doubt one of the most famous European monarchs and the Renaissance of Learning, his conquests and famously, his being crowned as Roman Emperor by Leo III are only a few of his achievements. His reign lasted for 47 years and after his grandsons divided the empire, the remnants became the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire.
Ten Minute History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
Recommended books:
Chris Wickham - The Inheritance of Rome: A History of Europe from 400 to 1000. - Seriously one of the best works on the period known as the Dark Ages, it covers everything from the collapse of the Western Roman Emperor to the nomads in Eastern Europe in an easily consumable format. An amazing book.
Rosamond Mckitterick - Charlemagne: The Formation of a European Identity. - This one is by my old lecturer and so I'd advise it for undergrads or enthusiasts only. It is probably the best book on Charlemagne's reign available and is up to date on the new findings surrounding things like where he conquered and his personal education. Few maps though, so boo there.

I was a devout Christian, and I was known for my patronage of the arts and architecture. I founded the University of Paris in 829, and I commissioned the construction of many churches and monasteries.
I was also a strong advocate for the rights of the church, and I clashed with my sons over their attempts to assert their own authority. This led to a civil war in 833, in which I was deposed by my sons. However, I was restored to power in 834, and I ruled until my death in 840.
I am remembered as a complex and contradictory figure. I was a wise and just ruler, but I was also autocratic and inflexible. My reign was marked by both great achievements and great failures.
He was a devout Christian and a strong advocate for the rights of the church. He issued the Ordinatio imperii in 817, which established the principle of primogeniture in the Frankish Empire. This meant that the eldest son would inherit the throne, regardless of whether he was the firstborn of the current ruler's first wife or second wife.
He was also a patron of the arts and architecture. He founded the University of Paris in 829, and he commissioned the construction of many churches and monasteries.
He clashed with his sons over their attempts to assert their own authority. This led to a civil war in 833, in which he was deposed by his sons. However, he was restored to power in 834, and he ruled until his death in 840.
Here are some specific examples of his achievements:
He defeated the Saxons in a series of wars, and he incorporated their territory into the Frankish Empire.
He conquered Barcelona from the Moors in 801.
He codified the laws of the Frankish Empire in the Capitulare missorum generale in 818.
He founded the University of Paris in 829.
He commissioned the construction of the Basilica of Saint-Denis in Paris.
Here are some specific examples of his failures:
The civil war with his sons weakened the Frankish Empire and led to its eventual fragmentation.
His attempts to reform the church alienated many of the clergy.
His policies were often inconsistent and indecisive, which led to instability in the empire.
Louis the Pious was a complex and contradictory figure. He was a wise and just ruler, but he was also autocratic and inflexible. His reign was marked by both great achievements and great failures. He is remembered as a pivotal figure in the history of the Frankish Empire, and his legacy continues to be debated by historians today.
