Dublin – where history and heritage thrive, and good cheer abounds. Check out the top sights and stories of the capital city and start planning a trip of your own!
When ready, browse vacation packages to Dublin: https://www.expedia.com/Dublin.d178256.Destination-Travel-Guides
Despite a long and sometimes tragic history of invasion and resistance, this thriving business capital has poetry, music and literature percolating through its cobblestones.
While #Dublin proudly honours its past, it is equally passionate about enjoying each and every new day. Nowhere is life celebrated more than in the city’s nearly 700 pubs.
Of all the gifts, Dublin has given to the world, perhaps the most intoxicating are its stories. Originally built for the sons of the Irish gentry, the ivy-covered stone buildings of Trinity College are home to some of the oldest remaining manuscripts in the world, including the 1000-year-old Book of Kells.
Dubliner Jonathan Swift, once said, “May you live all the days of your life.” There is no better way to define Dublin. Its passion for life is contagious, captivating and sure to stay with you after your #vacation here for the rest of your days.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Anglo-Irish Treaty ratified 100 years ago today
One hundred years ago today, the Dáil voted to ratify the Anglo-Irish Treaty. After a passionate, sometimes ill-tempered debate lasting three weeks, the vote in favour was extraordinarily close: 64 votes to 57.
The vote paved the way for the new Irish government to take power from the British, but also set in motion the events that led to the Civil War six months later.
The vote took place exactly a month after the signing of the Treaty in London.
The Treaty had to be ratified by a vote of the British parliament in London and the Irish parliament in Dublin.

Less than six years after the Easter Rising, men who had once been detained as prisoners in Richmond Barracks were now debating Irish sovereignty in London.

Donal Fallon is a historian, broadcaster, author and curator from Dublin. Formerly Historian in Residence to Dublin City Council, he is the author of numerous studies of twentieth-century Dublin, including the recently published ‘14 Henrietta Street: From Tenements to Suburbia, 1922 - 1979 ’. He produces the Three Castles Burning podcast and has contributed to publications including Jacobin, Dublin Historical Review, Saothar and The Irish Times. Less than six years after the Easter Rising, men who had once been detained as prisoners in Richmond Barracks were now debating Irish sovereignty in London.
What was contained within the Anglo-Irish Treaty and what wasn't? Was the Treaty alone the catalyst for Civil War? Where did the Irish public stand on it? In this online talk, Historian Donal Fallon explores the document that ended one war and began another.
Donal Fallon is Social Historian for Dublin City Council Culture Company.

(7 Jun 1997) English/Nat
Sinn Fein supporters were celebrating on Saturday night after their candidate won the party's first seat in the Irish parliament.
While final results were still inconclusive in the election, counting showed clear gains for Sinn Fein, whose profile has risen amid efforts to reach peace in Northern Ireland.
As the result was read out in the Irish constituency of Cavan-Monaghan, the crowd cheered for Ireland's first Sinn Fein member of parliament.
The party, which is allied to the Irish Republican Army, has seen its profile grow while peace negotiations are carried out in Northern Ireland.
Sinn Fein first took part in elections in the Irish Republic in 1987, and captured just 1.6 per cent of votes during the last ballot in 1992.
This time, running an aggressive campaign urging militant action against drug dealers, particularly in Dublin, the party won more than five per cent nationally.
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams believes his party will not be marginalised when the new Irish parliament forms.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well, I cannot see an Irish government ignoring the electoral outcome and the election of a T-D (member of parliament). They might not like what Sinn Fein stands for and we don't like what they stand for many times - that isn't the point. I can't see them ignoring or trying to marginalise or demonising our mandate in this constituency. And I also if I may say so in the other 13 constituencies in which we contested where our votes went up everywhere."
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein president
He was also positive about the newly elected member's contribution to the peace process in Northern Ireland.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well it sends a very clear message to the governments - that there needs to be inclusiveness, people need to be treated on the basis of equality. Caoimhghin O Caolain is a very experienced member of our party leadership. He will bring I'm sure his experience to bear in trying to reconstruct the next phase of the peace process. The governments need to seize this moment and move it forward.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein president
The new member Caoimhghin O Caolain was obviously delighted.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Clearly we're elated with the result. I think it's been a resounding success for Sinn Fein. And I think that the best indicators are the people outside gathered together in celebration."
SUPER CAPTION: Caoimhghin O Caolain, Sinn Fein candidate
Caoimhghin O Caolain captured the seat in Cavan-Monaghan, a constituency bordering the British-ruled province, beating the three Fianna Fail candidates.
His supporters drove around the streets with Irish flags waving in celebration of the Sinn Fein victory.
Another Sinn Fein candidate, Martin Ferris, appeared close to winning a seat in Kerry, south-west Ireland, where Foreign Minister Dick Spring topped the poll.
Ferris was convicted of trying to smuggle Irish Republican Army weapons by boat from Boston to Ireland in 1984 and served eight years in Ireland's top-security Portlaoise prison.

The Immigrant Council of Ireland, in partnership with Dublin City University, is excited to present a series of public webinars on the theme 'Promoting Democratic Participation: An Active Citizenship for Migrants'. This webinar series introduces various aspects of the Irish political system, with a focus on aspiring local election candidates and those with an interest in the Irish political and electoral system. The series covers topics such as party systems in Ireland, mobilisation of migrant voters, migrant women in politics; party affiliation, electoral campaign organisation, outreach strategies, and social media campaigning.
Webinar 3 – Political system and party membership in Ireland
Date: Wednesday, 6 April 2022, 6pm-7pm
Speakers:
- Adrian Kavanagh (Maynooth University)
- Claire McGing (Institute of Arts, Design and Technology - IADT)
- Chair: Dr Valesca Lima, DCU
In the 2019 Irish Local Government elections, all nine migrant candidates elected were party nominees, giving a clear indication that party affiliation is gives candidates a significant advantage. Diverse membership of political parties is also an important metric of migrants' integration. Migrants are very interested in joining a political party in Ireland however the complexity of Irish politics is a barrier to understand which political part may be the best house for their political views. In this webinar, speakers will explain the electoral system in Ireland, and the socio-historical context of political parties. The main goal of the webinar is to help migrants to make their decision as to whether to join a political party, and if so to help them to understand which party most aligns with their values and views.
