The video offers a quick guide on learning DSM diagnoses efficiently. It acknowledges the challenge of memorizing the arbitrary criteria and numbers in the DSM but stresses the importance of understanding them. The presenter suggests using one-page sheets containing diagnoses categorized into sections, with diagnoses highlighted in yellow and specifiers in red for easier navigation. These sheets can be downloaded from a Google Drive link provided in the description. The recommended approach is not to cram all the information in one session but to encounter patients with different diagnoses over time, referring to the sheets for a good differential and reflecting on why certain criteria fit or don't fit. The goal is to internalize the diagnoses through practical application rather than rote memorization. The video encourages viewers to engage with the material actively, emphasizing understanding over mere memorization.

If you or someone you know is dealing with a challenging situation and could benefit from additional support, consider talking to one of the 10,000 licensed online counselors at BetterHelp.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) is a resource that mental health professionals and doctors use to diagnose mental illness. The book helps mental health providers develop treatment plans for their clients. It notes symptoms of each disorder, and what to look out for when diagnosing an individual. For a person to have a diagnosis, they need to meet particular criteria or display specific symptoms.
With a diagnosis, there are specific criteria that a person needs to meet. Regarding any mental health disorder, it needs to cause significant distress to a person’s life. It’s considered a diagnosis when the disorder impacts an individual’s life to the point where they have difficulty functioning. If that’s the case, then the health professional will look at the person’s symptoms and determine what their diagnosis is, and what the treatment plan is. If you find that your mental health issues are making it hard to function in your life, consider meeting with an online therapist. You can learn strategies to manage your emotions, and develop a healthy way of coping with life challenges.
