A teaching hospital is a hospital or medical center that provides clinical education and training to future and current health professionals. Teaching hospitals are often affiliated with medical schools and work closely with medical students throughout their period of matriculation, and especially during their clerkship (internship) years. In most cases, teaching hospitals also offer Graduate Medical Education (GME)/ physician residency programs, where medical school graduates train under a supervising (attending) physician to assist with the coordination of care.
In addition to offering medical education to medical students and physician residents, many teaching hospitals also serve as research institutes.
History
Although institutions for caring for the sick are known to have existed much earlier in history, the first teaching hospital, where students were authorized to methodically practice on patients under the supervision of physicians as part of their education, was reportedly the Academy of Gundishapur in the Persian Empire during the Sassanid era.
University Hospital is an independent state owned hospital in Newark, New Jersey.
Overview
University Hospital is an independent, standalone medical center owned by the State of New Jersey and governed by a board headed by the Honorable Donald DiFrancesco. It is located in the University Heights section of Newark, New Jersey. University Hospital is a principal teaching hospital for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and a regional resource for specialized services and critical care. The hospital is certified by the American College of Surgeons and is a state-designated Level 1 Trauma Center, one of only three in New Jersey. It is the largest provider of uncompensated care in New Jersey.
History
The hospital was founded as Newark City Hospital, which first opened on September 4, 1882 with 25 beds. The College of the Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey assumed operation of the hospital from the City in 1968 and renamed the entire complex Martland Hospital. The expansion of the College prompted the construction of a new hospital; and College Hospital opened in May 1979. The name was changed to University Hospital in 1981 to recognize the awarding of university status to the College by the state legislature. In November 2012, the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act provided for most schools and units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to be transferred to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. With this legislation, in July 2013 University Hospital became an independent, standalone medical center owned by the state.
Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre operates as a tertiary care referral hospital and specializes in oncology and trauma care services.
Operated by Vitalité Health Network, the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre traces its history to 1922 with the establishment of the Hôtel-Dieu de l’Assomption by the Sisters of Providence. The hospital was purchased by the Government of New Brunswick in 1967 and renamed Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Regional Hospital in honour of Acadian doctor and late Minister of Health Georges Dumont. The facility was also designated the primary Francophone referral hospital in the province. In 1975 the present facility at 330 University Avenue was opened with a capacity at that time of 273 beds; subsequent expansions have resulted in the present capacity of over 400 beds
University (formerly South Campus until September 1, 2003) is a Buffalo Metro Rail station located near the intersection of Main Street and Niagara Falls Boulevard on the University at Buffalo South Campus. It is a major transfer point between Metro Rail and many city and suburban bus routes, and offers a unique "Kiss and Ride" facility on the top level, above the ticket mezzazine. This allows drivers of automobiles a separate area to drop off passengers, so they do not add to the traffic congestion from buses at the station during rush-hour periods and a large park-and-ride facility directly to the east of the station. Since University Station serves as a terminal, immediately south is a double crossover. From May 20, 1985 to November 10, 1986, due to construction issues at LaSalle Station, Amherst Street Station served as the northern terminus. Since November 10, 1986, University Station serves as the northern terminus.
Bus routes serving University Station
University Station serves UB South and transfer point for buses to the north and northeast suburbs of the city and is one of only four stations that offers an off-road bus loop, requiring passengers to board/debark using curbside stops (the other three being LaSalle Station, located 4,224 feet south, Delavan/Canisius College Station, located 15,840 feet south and Utica Station, located 20,592 feet south) and is served by 11 bus routes:
University is a 2002 Tamilromance film directed by Praghadish starring Jeevan and Gajala. Jeevan made his debut with this film.University failed to make a mark at the box office.
