Dr. Buzzard's Original "Savannah" Band is the debut album by disco group Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, released in 1976 on RCA and including the band's best-known and most successful track "Whispering/Cherchez La Femme/Se Si Bon". The album peaked at #22 on the Billboard albums chart and #31 on the R&B listings. The lead vocals were provided by Cory Daye.
Track listing
All tracks written by August Darnell & Stony Browder Jr. unless stated
+/-, or Plus/Minus, is an Americanindietronic band formed in 2001. The band makes use of both electronic and traditional instruments, and has sought to use electronics to recreate traditional indie rock song forms and instrumental structures. The group has released two albums on each of the American indie labels Teenbeat Records and Absolutely Kosher, and their track "All I do" was prominently featured in the soundtrack for the major film Wicker Park. The group has developed a devoted following in Japan and Taiwan, and has toured there frequently. Although many artists append bonus tracks onto the end of Japanese album releases to discourage purchasers from buying cheaper US import versions, the overseas versions of +/- albums are usually quite different from the US versions - tracklists can be rearranged, artwork with noticeable changes is used, and tracks from the US version can be replaced as well as augmented by bonus tracks.
A band society is the simplest form of human society. A band generally consists of a small kin group, no larger than an extended family or clan; one definition sees a band as consisting of no more than 100 individuals.
Characteristics
Bands have a loose organization. Their power structure is often egalitarian and has informal leadership; the older members of the band generally are looked to for guidance and advice, and decisions are often made on a consensus basis, but there are no written laws and none of the specialised coercive roles (e.g., police) typically seen in more complex societies. Bands' customs are almost always transmitted orally. Formal social institutions are few or non-existent. Religion is generally based on family tradition, individual experience, or counsel from a shaman. All known band societies hunt and gather to obtain their subsistence.
Definitions and distinctions
In his 1972 study, The Notion of the Tribe, Morton Fried defined bands as small, mobile, and fluid social formations with weak leadership that do not generate surpluses, pay taxes nor support a standing army.
Originality is the aspect of created or invented works by as being new or novel, and thus can be distinguished from reproductions, clones, forgeries, or derivative works.
An original work is one not received from others nor one copied from or based upon the work of others.. It is a work created with a unique style and substance.
The term "originality" is often applied as a compliment to the creativity of artists, writers, and thinkers. The idea of originality as we know it was invented by Romanticism, with a notion that is often called romantic originality.
The concept of originality is culturally contingent. It became an ideal in Western culture starting from the 18th century. In contrast, at the time of Shakespeare it was common to appreciate more the similarity with an admired classical work, and Shakespeare himself avoided "unnecessary invention".
Originality in law
In law, originality has become an important legal concept with respect to intellectual property, where creativity and invention have manifest as copyrightable works.
In the patent law of the United States and most other countries, only original inventions are subject to protection. In addition to being original, inventions submitted for a patent must also be useful and nonobvious.

Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - Soraya (1978)
Introduction from Scarface (1983), directed by Brian De Palma
I bought this album back in January 1978 just as it was released. The full name of the album was Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band Meets King Penett and I still have the original vinyl LP from those days. I had just started out as a DJ at a local bar a week earlier and used to play the band's opening track, "Mister Love," as part of my nightly offerings. It did okay (mixed results some nights) as this was a bar that had a sizable disco audience (although tastes were generally mixed, with fans of rock, pop, jazz, funk, swing, 50's and 60's oldies, and eventually new wave, rap, and country included). But it was when I started introducing other tracks from the album that a few of those songs got a lot more requests than "Mister...

But it was when I started introducing other tracks from the album that a few of those songs got a lot more requests than "Mister Love." This was one of them: from side two, "Soraya/March of the Nignies." It really caught on although I don't think many were capable of dancing to it (LOL). The whistling part was really popular.
To me, this was a new band, but several years ago I found out that Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band had a hit single back in 1976, "Whispering/Cherchez La Femme/Se Si Bon" (or simply "Cherchez La Femme") which made it to #1. Where the hell was I that I could have missed that? As it turns out, the band was put together by half-brothers Stony Browder Jr. and Thomas Browder (also known as August Darnell). Later August Darnell and the band's percussionist, Andy Hernandez (also known as Coati Mundi), would form the even more famous group, Kid Creole and the Coconuts.
This is a big dance extravaganza video I put together using several sources, all synchronized by me. It is preceded by a clip from the Brian De Palma film, Scarface (1983) directed by the great Brian De Palma.

SUGARCOATED'S SIDE BAR #1:
The band members were thrilled to do this show and meet Dinah. There was however an added thrill to meet Sean Connery. After the show the band could not stop talking about how great it was to see Sean Connery aka "007" holding the album.
SUGARCOATED'S SIDE BAR #2:
Dinah was such a delight trying to converse in Spanish with me off the air. Her command of the language however was a bit limited and when on the air she tried to speak Spanish I could not make sense of it thus the silent gap. She was so adorable trying to say the Spanish word for number which is "Numero" but ended up saying "Numbre". She did a merge of the words "Nombre" (Name) & "Numero".
SUGARCOATED'S SIDE BAR #3:
Dinah & Sean were caught off guard. They were expecting for Cory to come to the microphone so they could say something to her then they would walk off then the music would start.
They did not realize that routine was that the music starts with Cory at the piano . The music started with them still hanging around. That is why you see Dinah fumbling with the microphone stand. The clip is not the best quality however as they are leaving you might be able to notice them laughing.
SUGARCOATED'S SIDE BAR #4:
During these times all the TV shows wanted us to mime the entire performance which we were reluctant to do. A compromise was reached with the shows we finally performed on.
We went into the studio and did a special TV mix. We muted the lead vocal and some of the background vocals . We also muted a few instruments .
On the show Cory's lead vocal is completely live and so is the piano , hi-hat and toms. Stony & August microphones are live but their background vocals are also on tape thus at times they are doubling themselves. The bell hop singers in the background , horn section, Vibraphones , Guitar , Bass , most of the Drum kit, Percussion , synthesizer are miming. Notice also that you hear but do not see strings.
Addendum: In those days there were no automated boards or home music software/computers etc. In order to duplicate the exact mix you had to take a polaroids/pictures of the board and painstakingly notate all the knob settings for everything including EQ's, reverbs, delays, volume faders etc. When we did the TV remix we used the mixing documentation in order to maintain as much as possible the integrity of the original record mix.
BELLHOP SIDEBAR: The Bellhop background singers were just hired for the show.
- Debra Anderson (left) went on and became part of the disco group Stargard.
- Lynda Seals (right) has worked with various artists including Friends of Distinction, Lola Falana, Bill Cosby, Abbe Lane, Johnny Mathis and Helen Reddy

Close your eyes And rest your tired body next to mine Nobody knows more than you These hard times that we're living through But baby, we'll go on and on Lord knows, we've got each other So kiss me, hug and love Hard times we can get over, yeah Now son, hate must dies With her bags of tricks, of cheats and dirty lies Nobody smiles and nobody cries And no one seems to care if they live or die But baby, we'll go on and on God knows, we've got each other So come on, kiss me, hug and love, yes Hard times we can get over [Incomprehensible] bullets and guns And the outlaw always rides in front But baby, just you come to me
