Downtown is the oldest part of the city and includes the riverfront and the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi river. The founders of Memphis dedicated the riverfront to the public "now and forever" as long as the public use continued. The land overlooking the riverfront was originally planned to become a "public promenade" to be called Mississippi Row. The upper riverfront became the site of the river landing where steamboats were loaded with cotton and other goods in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Between 1844 and 1886 the river landing was paved with limestone and granitecobblestones brought in from the upper Midwest. This created what is today the largest intact Mississippi River landing still in existence, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The explosion of the steamboat Sultana in 1865 near Memphis was one of the worst marine disasters in history.
Memphis had a population of 653,450 in 2013, making it the largest city in the state of Tennessee, the largest city on the Mississippi River, the third largest in the greater Southeastern United States, and the 23rd largest in the United States.
The greater Memphis metropolitan area, including adjacent counties in Mississippi and Arkansas, had a 2014 population of 1,317,314. This makes Memphis the second-largest metropolitan area in Tennessee, surpassed by metropolitan Nashville.
Memphis is the youngest of Tennessee's major cities, founded in 1819 as a planned city by a group of wealthy Americans including judge John Overton and future president Andrew Jackson. A resident of Memphis is referred to as a Memphian, and the Memphis region is known, particularly to media outlets, as "Memphis & the Mid-South".
"Memphis, Tennessee" is a song by Chuck Berry. It is sometimes shortened to "Memphis". In the UK, the song charted at #6 in 1963, at the same time Decca Records issued a cover version in the UK by Dave Berry and the Cruisers, which also became a UK Top 20 hit single. "Memphis, Tennessee" was most successfully covered by Johnny Rivers whose version of the song was a #2 US hit in 1964.
Chuck Berry later composed a sequel, "Little Marie", which appeared in 1964 as a single and on the album St. Louis to Liverpool.
The state of Tennessee is rooted in the Watauga Association, a 1772 frontier pact generally regarded as the first constitutional government west of the Appalachians. What is now Tennessee was initially part of North Carolina, and later part of the Southwest Territory. Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 16th state on June 1, 1796. Tennessee was the last state to leave the Union and join the Confederacy at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War in 1861. Occupied by Union forces from 1862, it was the first state to be readmitted to the Union at the end of the war.
"Welcome to the World", which single version featuring Kid Cudi is the second single from this album, released in February 2009 has reached #58 on the US Hot 100 and has debuted at number 96 in Australia's Aria Singles Chart and has peaked at number 42.
Memphis, Tennessee is the second largest city in the state and is home to great museums, restaurants and loads of history. I spent a week in the city and really enjoyed learning more about it and exploring some of the tops spots like Graceland, the National Civil Rights Museum and the Peabody Hotel. Here are some of the best things to do in Memphis. Let me know what I left off in the comments.

Memphis, the largest city in Tennessee, located in the southwestern corner of the state, is full of heart and soul as well as a plethora of cultural and historical treasures. It is a fantastic city with many attractions and strong music, art, and cuisine culture. Although it has attempted to shed its other reputation as a deadly city, it has failed to do so.
If you are contemplating a trip to Memphis, watch this video more than once to determine why it is the most dangerous city in the United States. We dug deep into the data and crime reports and talked to inhabitants of the city to give you a more accurate picture of how safe the city is.
Memphis Crime Stats
First and foremost, we need to tell or remind you how we arrived at our conclusion. The violent crime rate is determined by dividing the number of recorded offenses by the entire population. The result is then multiplied by 100,000 to get the overall rate per 100,000.
Memphis is not a safe location to go to or live in. According to statistics, it routinely rates among the most hazardous cities in the United States. The FBI crime data reported in 2019 that Memphis has the fourth-highest rate of violent crime with 2,003.32 crimes per 100,000 population. It also has the third-highest rate of property crime in the country with a 6,297.83 per 100,000 population.
The nationwide rate of violent crime is 366.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, while the rate of property crime is 2,109.9 per 100,000 persons, according to FBI statistics. However, the rate is more than three times higher in Memphis than the national average.
The crime rates in Memphis are comparable to the worst of crimes in Tennessee, St. Louis, Nashville, Detroit, Baltimore, and Milwaukee. Homicides, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults are examples of such violent crimes often witnessed in this city at high rates. All of this makes Memphis the most dangerous city in the US.
Memphis Murder Stats
In 2020, 334 killings were recorded in Memphis, representing a stunning 74.8 percent increase over the previous year's total of 191. The killings registered in Memphis are the highest number of homicides ever recorded in the city, breaking the previous 228 homicides record set in 2016.
Memphis had a murder rate of 52.44 per 100,000 population in 2020, confirming that it is one of the most violent cities in the United States. It shares this description with cities such as St. Louis and Baltimore which are also sources of worry.
On an encouraging note, while Memphis witnessed a record number of killings in 2020, most other crime indicators, such as robbery, assault, burglary, and theft, dropped.
Is Downtown Memphis safe?
During the day, downtown Memphis is a pretty secure location to be while visiting. Police are well represented and the presence of the Blue Suede Brigade provides additional protection and assurance of safety. The situation may change late at night when there are fewer people around.
Although you may see homeless individuals and aggressive panhandlers when touring Downtown, they are mostly harmless and pose no threat to visitors. We advise that you stay in the major sections of Downtown and avoid venturing outside of that region since it may get dangerous outside of those areas.

Memphis, Tennessee is a fantastic city for food with some of the best BBQ in the United States. The city is home to many different types of food but BBQ is overwhelmingly the reason that people visit Memphis. I spent the better part of a week in the city and tried all sorts of restaurants ranging from a cafe that Elvis frequented to the creators of BBQ spaghetti. Here are some of my favorite spots and let me know what I left off in the comments.
