The district courts are from levels lower ground to level three and the local courts are level four and level five. Our office is Sydney Criminal Lawyers® and is located here across the road from the Downing Centre; 267 Castlereagh Street Sydney. If you're coming here by car we offer free visitor parking. Alternatively if you travel by public transport Museum station is a short distance from the Downing Centre and just a little distance down the road is Town Hall station. So this is the Downing Centre Court Complex. It's an important building because it is entered into the register of the National Estate. So it's a culturally significant building, a lot of cases are run through the Downing Centre Courts. The cases range from drink driving, AVOs, and so on, up until district court trials for serious crime. That's the Downing Centre Court Complex.

I'm here at court 3.1 at the Downing Centre courthouse, which is a district court. It's the courtroom into which your matter will normally come if it's the first time in the district court lists. Now if you are unrepresented what you should do is obviously come into the courtroom. If the judge is sitting on the bench, which is right at the front of the courtroom, then you should bow to the judge, come and sit in the public area of the courtroom, which is here to my left. Eventually your matter will be called. When your matter is called what you should do is walk up to this microphone, and when you speak to the judge you address them as "your honour". They will normally on the first court occasion ask you what you wish to do. It may be that you wish to adjourn the case, that is put it to another date in order to get legal advice or representation, it may be that you wish to enter a plea of guilty, or it may be that you maintain your plea of not guilty and you wish to obtain another date down the track, it may be a trial date, which is the date when the judge and the jury preside over your your trial, and that's when witnesses come to court, and eventually the jury will decide whether you are guilty or not guilty.
